Melissa Frakman, Krishanu Acharya, Prof. N.P. Padhy and Dr. Durga Das

Opening the session, GOPIO International President Prakash Shah, President of GOPIO International, said the event underscored how STEM has powered India’s migration waves and global influence.

“Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math have been a crucial driver of the waves of migration from India to the Western world in the last sixty years,” Shah said. “Originally dubbed the brain drain, this migration has fertilized every Silicon Valley in every Western country.”

He recalled how the phrase “Better brain drain than the brain in the drain” silenced early criticism of the movement of Indian talent. “There is no doubt now that Indian scientists and engineers have played the most crucial role in the technological advances of the last sixty years in every branch of technology,” Shah added.

Dr. Thomas Abraham, GOPIO’s Founder and Chairman, traced the organization’s evolution since 1989 and its mission to connect global Indian professionals with their homeland.

“We have worked to bring the Indian diaspora into mainstream public life and address the issues of our community for thirty-six years,” he said. “Now we are expanding that mission to technology and innovation, building bridges between diaspora scientists, technologists, and entrepreneurs and their counterparts in India.”

Dr Abraham highlighted plans to foster collaboration in advanced computing, AI, nanotechnology, critical minerals, and clean energy. “We want to identify and network diaspora experts in each area so that they can strengthen India’s innovation ecosystem,” he emphasized.

As chair of the GOPIO Webinar Series, Sunil Vuppala welcomed the speakers and audience, describing the event as part of GOPIO’s broader effort to connect the diaspora’s intellectual capital with India’s growth story.

“Each month’s discussion brings forward voices from different parts of the world who are defining the global Indian identity through innovation and excellence,” he said.

Vuppala commended the speakers for representing both academic rigor and entrepreneurial drive. “This is what distinguishes the Indian diaspora — a commitment to knowledge, collaboration, and giving back,” he said.

Two Directors of NITs, Dr. N.P.Padhy, Director of Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT, Jaipur, India) and Dr. Anupam Shukla, Director of Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT, Surat, India) Were distinguished guest at the event.

Director Padhy spoke about India’s scientific transformation and how collaboration with the diaspora can accelerate the achievement of national goals.

“India today is not just a participant but a driver of global technology,” he said. “The synergy between domestic talent and diaspora experience is essential for achieving leadership in clean energy, space research, and digital transformation.”

Padhy emphasized that interdisciplinary research is the foundation of India’s innovation ecosystem. “We must move beyond silos — AI, materials science, and sustainable engineering must come together to meet real human needs,” he added.

MNIT Director Prof. N.P. Padhy Speaking at GOPIO Tech Webinar

Moderating from Australia, Prof. Prasad Yarlagadda, Dean of Science, Engineering, and Digital Technologies, Southern Queensland University, reflected on his four-decade career in advanced manufacturing and nanotechnology.

“By 2035 and 2050, universities may become just hubs of learning,” he said. “They will facilitate rather than deliver education as we know it today.”

He shared his experience leading collaborations with Indian institutions, including the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru and IIT Madras, in energy materials and antibacterial nanotechnologies.

Dr Himanshu Jain, T.L. Diamond Distinguished Chair in Engineering and Applied Science, and Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Lehigh University, and currently on Sabbatical at the University of California (Davis), presented on advanced materials and the critical role of glass in sustainability, clean energy, and healthcare.

“Glass is the oldest man-made material, but its future applications — from photonics to climate change — are transforming industries,” Dr. Jain said.

He outlined innovations such as solar-concentrating glass mirrors, energy-efficient building glazing, and glass composites for wind turbines. “The next frontier,” he added, “is moving from electronics to photonics and even using glass as a controlled-release fertilizer for sustainable agriculture.”

Dr. D.R. Nagaraj, Henry Krumb Professor of Professional Practice, Department of Earth and Environmental Engineering, Columbia University, New York(USA), spoke about “Mines of the Future” and the need for sustainable extraction of critical minerals.

“Minerals are the backbone of civilization — without them, we’d be hunter-gatherers,” Dr Nagaraj said. “Clean energy and technology depend on minerals as much as energy depends on mining.”

Dr. Nagaraj highlighted how 54 critical minerals, including lithium, cobalt, and rare earths, drive global supply chains. He warned of dependence on unstable sources and called for precision mining using AI, robotics, and data analytics. “We cannot have clean energy without mining, and we cannot mine without energy,” he said.

Entrepreneur and public policy leader Bhavini Patel, Executive Director of Sustainable Pittsburgh (USA), discussed the role of Indian American professionals in driving inclusive innovation and civic engagement.

“We often think of technology as code and machines, but at its heart, it’s about people — who build it, who have access to it, and who it benefits,” she said.

Patel emphasized the importance of representation and collaboration among women in tech, business, and public policy. “Our diaspora’s story isn’t just one of success — it’s about building systems that include the next generation of dreamers,” she added.

Melissa Frakman, Investor, CEO & Founding and Managing Partner of EMVC (USA), spotlighted India’s fintech surge and the Diaspora’s role in scaling it globally.

“Beyond capital, our founders need mentorship, networks, and cultural fluency,” she said. “Diaspora venture capital provides all three.”

She emphasized the importance of trust and cross-border experience in building resilient startup ecosystems. “India’s fintech ecosystem is one of the fastest-growing in the world — and it’s stronger when connected to its diaspora roots,” Frakman noted.

Entrepreneur Krishanu Acharya, co-founder and CEO of Delhi-based Suhora Technologies (India), described how his startup uses satellite-based AI analytics for national security, mining, and disaster management.

“We bring space-based surveillance and analytics for critical infrastructure,” he said. “Our India-first platform is export-ready, integrating AI and remote sensing for defense, energy, and disaster resilience.”

He emphasized ethical AI: “We use AI to complement humans, not replace them. Human oversight remains central to every decision.”

Dr. Durga Das, founder and CEO of AiroWater (USA/India), showcased his company’s innovation: producing clean water from atmospheric moisture.

“There’s seven times more water in the air than in the ground, yet we wait for it to rain and dig for it,” she said.

Das explained how his company’s “water from air” devices are addressing water crises in cities like Chennai and Cape Town. “We’re turning air into a sustainable water source,” he noted, calling it “a technology born of necessity and driven by impact.”

The webinar concluded with a call for closer collaboration between global Indian innovators and their counterparts in India. GOPIO leaders reaffirmed their goal of expanding specialized technology councils, creating sectoral networks, and aligning Diaspora innovation with India’s national growth priorities.

“From AI and space to minerals and water, the Indian Diaspora continues to shape the world’s technological destiny,” Dr Abraham said in closing. “GOPIO is committed to being that bridge.”

The program ended with a vote of thanks by GOPIO Secretary Siddarth Jain. Technical support for the Zoom meeting was provided by GOPIO Associate Secretary Vatsala Upadhyay.

The program started with a welcome by UBS Senior Vice President Ranjeet Guptara. GOPIO Chairman Dr. Thomas Abraham spoke about the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) and the GCCI and how GCCI will provide a networking platform for small and medium businesses from the Diaspora and further connect them to Indian businesses. GOPIO‘s Global Ambassador Prakash Shah and representatives from Connecticut, Manhattan, and New Jersey chapters were also present.

Having surveyed the history of technology from ancient times, Prof. Guptara asked why the knowledge behind those technologies disappeared so completely, suggesting that these technologies were for the benefit of the elite, at the cost of the majority of the population; and the elite regarded knowledge as power, and therefore guarded it jealously, which meant that only a very few people had to die, from natural or human causes, for any technological secret to be lost.

Prof. Guptara then raised a question, “What are the lessons from that for our own time?”

Pointing out that the Protestant Reformation was key to understanding the rise of modern technologies, he surveyed their contributions to modern life. As a result, a huge part of the world now has a lifestyle that would have been the envy of even emperors from the past. There have been many enabling technologies in the recent past, but all those put together don’t match the impact that quantum computing is already having – and it will have an even faster and hugely greater impact in the immediate future. In just 5 years, quantum capability has arguably grown theoretically by 347.8 orders of magnitude – and certainly in reality by something like 100 times already. Applied just to manufacturing, the result is possibly prosperity at such a huge scale that material things lose value entirely (value is a function of demand vs supply, and if demand e.g. for food and clothes grows at say 5% a year despite a foreseeably collapsing world population, but availability of food and clothes is more or less infinite, then the conclusion for the price of food and clothes is obvious). To take just that consequence seriously, what changes are needed in social political, and economic arrangements to enable us to transition peacefully to such unimaginable prosperity?

But, looking more mundanely at the problems facing our global reality, could we not say that these are: Debt out of control; Unsustainable and still rising pay differentials and wealth inequality; Financial economy vs. real economy; Unaccountable corporations; Looming care crisis; Family breakdown; Generational inequality and Managing the environmental crisis.

Prof. Guptara then raised another question, “Can Quantum technology help us with such real issues?”

The fact is that no technology is “neutral” – all technologies are both good *and* evil; technology is essentially a multiplier – of good as well as evil.

So can any kind of technology save us? No, because humans have always used, and will always (if possible) use tech in evil ways; but also YES, to the degree that tech is used in good ways. In that case, can individuals (or individual companies) determine whether technology is used for good or ill? YES, at their level; but NO at larger levels – e.g., the economy as a whole. And, in that case, at the level of the whole economy, what are the things that determine whether good uses of technology are encouraged – and evil uses of technology are discouraged?

GOPIO and UBS officials after the talk by Prof. Prabhu Guptara

The global economic and political structures behind our real crises take as their foundational assumptions the following basic untruths:

People are individuals who are mainly decision-making units

Money is the most effective measure of value

Relationships are no more than political or economic connections.

He concluded that if we rid ourselves of these untruths, and reform our global economic and political structures accordingly, technology will then stop performing the dual role of solving as well as magnifying problems, and start performing much more of a systemically positive role.

About GCCI – GOPIO Chamber of Commerce and Industry was launched as a networking platform for the Indian Diaspora businesses worldwide. It hopes to connect micro, small, and medium businesses,s and professional practitioners in a locality or city through its chapters and with their counterparts in INDIA

GOPIO International Chairman Dr. Thomas Abraham who initiated and coordinated this effort from GOPIO told the audience that Indian Americans have done extremely well professionally, politically, and financially and that the community should do more for the larger society. In this regard, GOPIO chapters in the New York area have successfully launched the India Collection of books at the public libraries in Norwalk and Stamford in Connecticut, Edison, New Jersey, and Queens and Long Island in New York State.

“We found that these books are very valuable resources for the larger society to know about India and Indian culture, its democracy, political leaders and social reformers, economy, and India’s relations with countries around the world,” said Dr. Abraham.

Dr. Abraham thanked the Parsippany Library for launching the India Collection of Books. The inauguration was done with the traditional lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries, GOPIO officials, and co-sponsoring organizations.

The books were provided by the Indian Consulate and GOPIO further supplemented books collected from our community who are downsizing. These included new books and old classics which are not available anywhere else now. Several language-based classics were presented by those who were in traditional dress.

Consul Pragya Singh, who is Head of Visa and Passport renewals at the Indian Consulate, and also Consul for Community Affairs said that India was a very diverse and plural country and the consulate was happy to assist and work with local Indian Organizations in strengthening the bond between India and USA with the help of initiatives like this where the consulate donated diverse and useful books for the benefit of the Indian community and the American society.

Upendra Chivukula (Former Assembly Speaker of New Jersey) was happy to see so many Indian Americans turn out for this India Initiative event and also hoped to see the community take an active part in local politics so that this will help the community to have its voice heard in decision making.

Former Andhra Pradesh and Telangana minister from India Ponnala Lakshmaiah who was also a former Resident of Parsippany said that he was happy to take part in the event in his former hometown and said life has come a full circle for him as he had started working at the age of 6 in a library to fund his education and today his autobiography along with other valuable books he donated were being put in the Parsippany library. He thanked the organizers and wished success to the India initiative.

After the ceremony, some classic books in Hindi and half a dozen regional languages were presented by community representatives in their traditional dress. After describing the book and reading a passage from the book, these books were presented to the Library’s Head of Information Services Nicholas Jackson. These books will be cataloged and will be available soon from the library.

A cultural program followed with music and dances from India put together by Mrs. Manju Bhargava, President of the New Jersey Telegu Association. The dancers were Indian American high school and college students.

The program continued with a networking reception. Since the ceremony and cultural program were brief, people had ample to time to meet and greet each other.

“This was one of the best library launches of India Collection of Books with wider Indian community participation,’ remarked Dr. Abraham.

WASHINGTON DC: The Asian American Unity Coalition (AAUC) is hosting the 2024 National AANHPI Unity Summit in Washington D.C. from September 19-20, 2024. The cohost of the summit includes ten other local, national, and global AAPI organizations. The summit aims to provide a platform for Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) organizations and leaders to interact and collaborate on issues vital to their communities. The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) is a Founder and Member of the Asian American Unity Coalition (AAUC) which takes up and campaigns on broad issues of Asian Americans. GOPIO is co-host of the Summit.

In the morning of September 19th, a delegate group of 70 individuals will attend a White House Briefing to discuss issues concerning our diverse communities, followed by a White House tour for 100 Summit attendees. In the afternoon, representatives of the DOJ will meet and listen to our community voices at the Crowne Plaza Hotel which will be followed immediately by a youth session discussing racial bias in school and cross-cultural identities.

During the Unity Summit on September 20th, the AAUC will advocate for various causes such as racial discrimination, civil rights, hate crime prevention, immigration, and Asian American history education. GOPIO had suggested taking up the legislative issue of legal immigration backlog (Green Card) which has put 1.2 million Indian applicants on the waiting list, at the current level may take as many as 100 years to get a visa number until and unless the immigration rules are changed to remove the discriminatory rules towards Indian applicants and also the Chinese and Filipino applicants. There are two bipartisan bills in Congress (HR-6543 and S-3269) that could reduce this long waiting period. These bills are included in the AAUC Summit agenda.

The summit will also mark the launch of the mobile-responsive online AAPI Community Hub. During the press conference on September 20th, the AAUC will present its resolution on the Alien Land Laws. Additionally, the AAUC will also highlight the power of the online AAPI Community Hub.

Several distinguished individuals will be recognized for their contributions during the summit:

US Rep. Judy Chu will receive the Political Leadership Award.

US Rep. Andy Kim will receive the Public Service Award.

Suffolk County Police Asian Jade Society, SEWA-AIFW, Team Aids, and Elizabeth de Leon-Gamboa will be honored with the Community Service Award.

Mr. Evan Chen will be recognized as Philanthropist of the Year.

Ms. JencyMalena Mesik and Mr. Suraj Kulkarni will receive the President’s Young Person and Youth Awards, respectively.

The AAUC Unity Summit registration is now closed. Attendees from across the country representing diverse AAPI ethnicities and age groups will have networking opportunities with leaders from multicultural ethnic groups through in-person interactions.

The AAUC has made significant contributions to the AAPI community by organizing national conferences, assembling a diverse working board, developing monthly newsletters and podcasts, and creating an online hub that connects over 15,000 AAPI nonprofits across all 50 states.
