MUMBAI: NTPC Limited, India’s largest integrated power utility, has signed a pact with Engineers India Limited (EIL) to develop a Coal-to-Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) facility. In a significant step towards managing ‘peak hour power generation that will lead to improved grid stability, NTPC is actively looking towards Coal Gasification and Synthetic Natural Gas production.

The proposed facility will utilize high ash Indian coal from NTPC’s captive mines, converting it into SNG – a cleaner fuel alternative for NTPC’s gas-based power stations as well as in-situ power generation. This initiative aligns with the national vision for cleaner coal technologies and energy diversification.

Coal gasification is emerging as a key enabler for the sustainable utilization of domestic coal reserves, reducing dependency on imported fuels and lowering emissions.

Further, NETRA – which is the R&D wing of NTPC – is actively leading the initiative under its broader vision of “Greening the Coal” and advancing carbon capture and utilization technologies. The collaboration with EIL thus marks a significant milestone in developing integrated, indigenous solutions for clean energy and reinforces NTPC’s commitment to innovation-driven sustainability.

NTPC Ltd. is contributing one-fourth of India’s power requirements and has an installed capacity of 84 GW, with an additional capacity of 30.90 GW under construction, including 13.3 GW of renewable energy capacity. The company is committed to achieving 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032, strengthening India’s Net Zero goals.

With a diverse portfolio of thermal, hydro, solar, and wind power plants, NTPC is dedicated to delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity to the nation. The company is committed to adopting best practices, fostering innovation, and embracing clean energy technologies for a greener future.

Along with power generation, NTPC has ventured into various new business areas, including e-mobility, battery storage, pumped hydro storage, waste-to-energy, nuclear power, and green hydrogen solutions. It has also participated in the bidding for the power distribution of Union Territories.

MUMBAI: The Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) vertical of Larsen & Toubro has won new orders in the Middle East for expanding and strengthening the electricity grids at high voltage levels.

Saudi Arabia

The different operating regions in Saudi Arabia’s national electricity network are being interconnected through High Voltage Direct Current links that enable exchange of power between regions and enhanced system resilience. L&T has secured orders to establish ±500kV HVDC Transmission Links associated with these interconnections.

L&T has also won orders for three more packages involving two 380kV overhead transmission lines and a bulk supply 380kV Gas Insulated Substation. These elements contribute significantly to the renewable generation interconnection and fortification of the grid.

United Arab Emirates

In Abu Dhabi, L&T has received an order to build two major 400kV Gas Insulated Substations. In addition to civil works, the scope also involves Series Current Limiting Reactors, Auto Transformers, related control, protection, substation monitoring & alarm systems including fault and power quality monitoring, telecommunication systems, and integration with the Load Dispatch Centre. These substations will enhance the power transfer capacity of the electricity grid.

Commenting on the development T. Madhava Das, Whole-Time Director & Senior Executive Vice President (Utilities) – Larsen & Toubro said: “The fortification and modernization of transmission systems is the foremost step in establishing a secure, resilient grid capable of handling variable renewable generation in an evolving energy market. We thank our customers for entrusting these projects with us”.

Honeywell Forge Performance+ for Utilities helps companies boost energy reliability and resiliency through advanced analytics

INDIA: Honeywell today introduced Honeywell Forge Performance+ for Utilities, a groundbreaking platform designed to help utilities improve their operations and enhance the performance of existing utility grid assets and IT investments. The integration of automation software for utilities supports Honeywell’s alignment of its portfolio with the automation and energy transition megatrends.

The new solution is built on Honeywell Forge, which incorporates artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and digital twin capabilities intended to help utilities monitor assets, effectively identify root causes, and introduce predictive analytics to become more proactive with grid asset management. Forge Performance+ for Utilities also enables automation processes like demand response and distributed energy resource management to increase grid reliability and stability.

“Honeywell Forge Performance+ for Utilities is designed to enhance existing systems, providing greater value to utility companies’ investments and supporting a seamless combination of capabilities from various tools into a single, reliable platform,” said Hamed Heyhat, President of Honeywell Smart Energy and Thermal Solutions (SETS). “Through the power of digitalization, utilities will now have access to more quality data to better serve their customers and assets.”

Most traditional utility distribution grids were designed over a century ago to support highly predictable top-down generation and distribution of energy, water, or gas to consumers, leading to a lack of data or siloed data. Today, utilities face new challenges ranging from interpreting massive amounts of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) data and grid asset data to managing the accelerating adoption of less predictable Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). These renewable energy sources include solar panels, wind turbines, energy storage systems, and electric vehicles.

Honeywell Forge Performance+ for Utilities delivers near real-time insight to help utilities improve grid operation and address variability associated with new energy sources. The solution also provides a “bottom-up” forecast of energy demand, available distributed power-generating assets, and controllable loads designed to provide heightened operational visibility. With this visibility, utilities can better balance energy supply and demand which contributes to grid reliability and resiliency.

“The industry needs an innovative solution to help store and digitalize the multiple data streams from complex utility infrastructures around the world,” said Ben Dawson of SECO Energy, a not-for-profit electric cooperative based in Central Florida. “Honeywell Forge Performance+ for Utilities’ ability to receive real-time actionable insights on one connected platform helps utilities better connect with their customers worldwide.”

The innovative platform integrates, organizes, and visualizes data from various sources to accelerate analytics processes and digitalize utility grid data into actionable, real-time business and operational insights. It can run a variety of applications, including those from both Honeywell and third-party partners such as SparkMeter.
