PUNE: In a rare and high-risk clinical scenario, doctors at Inamdar Multispeciality Hospital successfully treated a 73-year-old woman whose life-threatening respiratory condition evolved into a complex surgical challenge where even a routine life-saving airway procedure became impossible.

The patient was admitted to the Critical Care Unit (CCU) at Inamdar Multispeciality Hospital on 1/3/26 under Dr. Amit Mazumdar with a sudden onset of breathlessness and severe oxygen desaturation following the consumption of outside food. She was a high-risk case, with multiple co-morbidities including morbid obesity, diabetes, and multinodular toxic goiter, and was also diagnosed with pneumothorax.

Initial Management (Date: 4/3/26)

An intercostal drainage (ICD) tube was inserted to manage the pneumothorax. The patient was stabilised and maintained on ventilatory support, with a trial on T-piece conducted after initial improvement.

Failed Extubation Attempts (Dates: 5/3/26 / __)

Despite meeting extubation parameters, two separate attempts to wean her off ventilatory support failed due to persistent desaturation, necessitating re-intubation. The inability to sustain spontaneous breathing raised the need for a definitive airway solution.

At this stage, the treating team explained the need for tracheostomy and thyroidectomy to the family. Given the perceived risks associated with thyroid surgery, the relatives initially consented only to tracheostomy, which was considered semi-urgent.

Intraoperative Turning Point (Date of Surgery: 9/3/26)

During surgery at Inamdar Multispeciality Hospital, doctors encountered a critical anatomical challenge. The patient had a massively enlarged thyroid gland extending retrosternally and completely engulfing the trachea, making tracheostomy technically impossible without first removing the thyroid.

This intraoperative finding necessitated an immediate change in surgical plan. The patient’s relatives were counselled again in real time regarding the urgency and inevitability of proceeding with thyroidectomy.

The surgery was led by Dr. Pravin Bhosale, ENT Surgeon, with support from the general surgery team—Dr. Nelson and Dr. Abhijeet Gotkhinde, while the anaesthesia team comprising Dr. Sandeep Patil and Dr. Jyoti Sawant ensured stable intraoperative management.

Following thyroid removal, the team conducted critical intraoperative assessments. The integrity of both recurrent laryngeal nerves was confirmed, the parathyroid glands were preserved, and there was no evidence of tracheomalacia.

Critical Surgical Decision

Based on these findings, the team made a decisive call to avoid tracheostomy and attempt controlled extubation.

Dr. Pravin Bhosale, ENT Surgeon, said, “This was a highly critical case because what appeared to be a routine need for tracheostomy turned into a complex airway emergency inside the operating theatre. The thyroid was massively enlarged and retrosternal, completely engulfing the trachea, leaving no safe option except to change the surgical plan immediately. In such situations, precise judgment, timing, and coordinated teamwork are absolutely crucial to achieving a successful outcome.”

Post-Operative Recovery (Date: 10/3/26)

The patient’s recovery was notably rapid. She required only two days of CCU care post-surgery. Swallowing function was assessed using bedside FEES (Functional Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing), following which all supportive lines and tubes, including Ryle’s tube, catheter, and surgical drains, were removed in a phased manner.

Discharge and Outcome (Date of Discharge: 14/3/26)

The patient was discharged in stable condition, marking a successful outcome in what doctors at Inamdar Multispeciality Hospital describe as a rare convergence of airway compromise and endocrine pathology.

Reflecting on her experience, the patient said, “I was struggling to breathe, and it was a very difficult time for my family and me. The doctors explained every step and gave us confidence throughout. I feel grateful to have recovered and to be going home.”

The case involved a multidisciplinary effort, with contributions from Dr. Mulla (Endocrinologist), Dr. Ajinkya Gulave, and Dr. Vrushali (Pulmonologists), along with ICU teams, operation theatre staff, and hospital support departments.

Clinical Significance

Doctors involved in the case emphasised that such outcomes depend heavily on real-time intraoperative judgment, multidisciplinary coordination, and the ability to adapt surgical strategy based on evolving clinical findings.

PUNE: Noble Hospital and Research Centre has announced the launch of its Centre of Excellence for Obesity, Metabolic Diseases and Advanced Bariatric Sciences, a comprehensive facility dedicated to the scientific and multidisciplinary management of obesity and related disorders. The centre was inaugurated by Mr. Naval Kishor Ram, Commissioner, Pune Municipal Corporation, in the presence of Dilip Mane, Chairman and Managing Director, Noble Hospitals and Research Centre, and Dr. Divij Mane, Dy. Managing Director, Dr. Sanjay Pathare, Group Executive Officer, Noble Hospitals and Research Centre.

The initiative comes at a time when obesity is increasingly recognized as a medical condition rather than merely a lifestyle issue. Recently, obesity has been formally classified as a disease in international medical coding systems (ICD), enabling structured treatment approaches including medical therapies and advanced bariatric procedures.

Mr.Naval Kishor Ram, Commissioner, Pune Municipal Corporation, said that there is a lack of awareness about Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in people. We inculcate the importance of early and proper diagnosis. Commending the initiative, he said that through this centre, Noble Hospital has taken a very important step to address the very root of obesity.

One of its kind, an integrated and comprehensive centre for obesity

This is one of its kind centres for the management of obesity with a holistic approach through integrated and comprehensive care for all kinds of obesity for adults as well as small children. Individuals seeking medical advice for obesity are guided by an obesity management group comprising a multidisciplinary team, right from a physician to a surgeon to a psychologist, delivering world-class non-surgical as well as surgical treatment regulated by international standards.

The new centre will offer integrated care through a multidisciplinary team, including bariatric medicine physicians, bariatric surgeon specialists, cosmetic-plastic surgeons, obesity and metabolic health nutritionists, bariatric physiotherapists, obesity educators, and dedicated counsellors.

The facility will provide advanced diagnostic and therapeutic options such as advanced body composition analysis, DEXA scan unit, modern bariatric surgery infrastructure like robotics, and Non-invasive weight-loss procedures like the Allurion endoscopic gastric balloon.

Being the pioneers in novel injectable medical therapies for weight loss, the hospital will integrate its experienced Bariatric physician team in this center of excellence.

To complete the transformation process, body contouring, including suitable surgical or non-surgical procedures designed to remove excess, sagging skin and stubborn fat deposits following weight loss, will also be available under one roof. The facility will also house an advanced bariatric operating table for enhanced patient safety.

The multidisciplinary team includes Dr. Reema Kashiva, Bariatric Physician, Dr. Parmeshwar Bambrule, Bariatric Surgeon, Dr. Ravi Swaminathan, Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Sarika Satav, Bariatric Clinical Nutritionist, Dt. Akshay Pawar, Dietician, Dr. Reshma Kangude-Lifestyle Educator, Dr. Bhupendra Gupta, Physiotherapist, Dr.Suhas Khaire, Endocrinologist, and Dr. Sheetal Harpale, Clinical Psychologist.

Dr. Reema Kashiva, Programme Director – Centre of Excellence for Obesity, Metabolic Diseases and Advanced Bariatric Sciences at Noble Hospitals, said that untreated obesity is associated with a lot of health complications, including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, metabolic disorders, and many other diseases. Early and scientific intervention can significantly reduce these risks and improve quality of life.

Obesity needs to be addressed at its roots, with scientific management at each stage

According to the team at the centre, “For years, we were treating the complications of obesity rather than the disease itself. With the recognition of obesity as a medical condition and the availability of effective therapies, it is now possible to intervene early and prevent associated complications. People need guidance at every stage of weight management. Scientific, supervised, and team-based management of obesity is the need of the hour.”

While people have apprehensions about the side effects of medications, most of these can be tackled when taken under medical supervision. What should be considered is the risk of having weight versus the benefit of using injectable medicines to reduce weight and live a better quality of life in the future, and aiming to reduce the future complications of obesity.

The centre aims to create greater public awareness about obesity as a treatable disease and create awareness amongst people with a BMI above 30, or above 27 with comorbid conditions, to seek timely medical consultation.

Dr. Sanjay Pathare, Group Executive Officer, Noble Hospitals and Research Center, said that “Obesity today is increasingly driven by poor dietary habits, over-nutrition, sedentary lifestyles, and stress, not just in adults but also in small children, and early and effective obesity management can significantly reduce the risk of multiple chronic diseases.“

Dr. Divij Mane, Deputy Managing Director, Noble Hospitals, said, “Not every obese patient needs surgery. In a center of excellence, precise BMI, BCA, and comorbidity assessment is done. Non-surgical options are primarily considered. Risks such as Type 2 Diabetes, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, hypertension, and heart disease are proactively evaluated, and appropriate treatment is made available under one roof. We aim to ensure the right care plan from the right team of experts reaches every individual, from the treatment phase to follow-up care to ensure long-term well-being.”

With this integrated super-specialist team approach, Noble Hospitals seeks to strengthen its commitment to advanced metabolic care and preventive healthcare for patients in Pune and across the region.

Dr. Dileep Mane, Chairman and Managing Director, Noble Hospitals, said that “Obesity is a complex, multi-faceted disease; hence, instead of multiple standalone consults, when a dedicated team of experts jointly provides an integrated care plan tailored to each individual’s needs, you get effective and more sustainable outcomes.“

Through this Centre for Obesity, Metabolic Diseases and Advanced Bariatric Sciences, we aim to redefine obesity care with integrated treatment, advanced technology, and sustained patient support

PUNE: Apollo Hospitals Pune, the city’s first 400-bed quaternary care centre, today announced the launch of its World Cancer Month awareness initiative, ‘Zero to Hero’, a campaign designed to highlight the life-saving impact of detecting cancer at its earliest stages. The initiative underscores Apollo’s core belief that cancer is conquerable when identified early, and brings together oncologists, survivors, and healthcare leaders to amplify the importance of screening, prevention, and timely intervention.

Apollo Hospitals Pune’s Oncology Centre of Excellence offers comprehensive cancer care supported by state-of-the-art technology and multidisciplinary expertise. The centre is equipped with AI-enabled PET-CT for highly accurate early detection, the VARIAN EDGE LINAC for precise, targeted radiation therapy, and the Da Vinci Xi robotic system for complex cancer surgeries across urological, gynaecological, gastrointestinal, and head and neck cancers. Backed by advanced diagnostics, precision radiation, and robotic surgery, the centre delivers an integrated approach spanning early detection, accurate diagnosis, advanced treatment, and improved recovery, reinforcing Apollo’s commitment to improving cancer outcomes through technology-led, patient-centric care.

Speaking on the launch, Dr. Manisha Karmarkar, CEO, Apollo Hospitals Pune, said, “Early cancer detection and prevention are among the most powerful tools in the fight against cancer. Early intervention significantly improves survival and reinforces Apollo’s long-standing belief that cancer can be defeated. However, screening only works when people participate. Fear, stigma, misinformation, and lack of awareness often delay diagnosis. At Apollo Hospitals Pune, our comprehensive ProHealth programme, India’s first AI-powered preventive health programme, empowers individuals to take proactive control of their health through advanced screening and risk assessment.”

Dr. Snita Sinukumar, Senior Surgical Oncologist, Robotic and HIPEC Specialist, said, “Nearly 40 to 50% of cancers can be prevented or detected early through screening and lifestyle measures. Tests such as digital mammography, Pap smear, low-dose CT scans, colonoscopy, PSA testing, and oral examinations can identify cancer even before symptoms appear. When detected early, survival rates can improve to as high as 80 to 90% or more.”

The Oncology Team at Apollo Hospital, Pune, further added, “Many cancers can be prevented through lifestyle choices and public health efforts. Avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, eating fruits and vegetables, sun protection, and vaccines like HPV and Hepatitis B are key. Governments should ensure access to screening and health campaigns, while healthcare, schools, and workplaces promote healthy habits and provide guidance at an early age.”

Equally important is recognising early warning signs and overcoming the tendency to delay medical check-ups, a trend particularly common in men’s health. Symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, persistent fatigue, unusual bleeding, new lumps, or a chronic cough lasting more than three weeks should never be ignored. While these signs do not always indicate cancer, early detection is critical for successful treatment, especially for prostate, kidney, and bladder cancers, which may be asymptomatic in their early stages. Modern interventions, such as advanced robotic surgery, have made many early-stage cancers highly treatable or even completely curable. Therefore, it is essential to listen to your body, use simple screening tests such as the PSA blood test, and consult a doctor promptly if any symptoms persist.

Through initiatives such as ‘Zero to Hero’, Apollo Hospitals Pune aims to build greater awareness, encourage proactive health-seeking behaviour, and empower individuals to take timely action, reinforcing its ongoing commitment to improving cancer outcomes through early detection and advanced care.

PUNE: Ruby Hall Clinic announced a landmark advancement in regional oncology with the launch of the Indian subcontinent’s first Robotic High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) therapy. This cutting-edge, non-invasive treatment for prostate cancer will be housed at the newly inaugurated Kalyani Institute of Robotic HIFU Therapy at Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune.

The facility was inaugurated by the leadership of Ruby Hall Clinic, including Dr. P.K. Grant, Dr. Simon Grant, and Dr. Himesh Gandhi, alongside the Kalyani family, represented by Dr. Baba Kalyani, Mrs. Sunita Kalyani, and Mr. Amit Kalyani of Bharat Forge. They were joined by international experts from Focal One, including Prof. Pascal (University of Toulouse), Dr. Damian, Vice President and CEO, and Mr. Ryan. The initiative has been made possible by the support of the Kalyani family, who have contributed to establishing the Kalyani Institute of Robotic HIFU Therapy at Ruby Hall Clinic, to improve access to advanced cancer care in India.

With over 40,000 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed annually in India, many men traditionally delay treatment due to the risks associated with invasive surgery or radiation – specifically concerns regarding recovery time and long-term functional health.
Robotic HIFU addresses these fears by offering:
• Targeted Precision: Destroys cancerous tissue while sparing surrounding healthy structures.
• Non-Invasive Nature: A completely incision-free and radiation-free procedure.
• Rapid Recovery: Typically performed as a day-case, allowing patients to return to their lives almost immediately.
• Preserved Quality of Life: Significantly reduces the risk of urinary and sexual dysfunction compared to traditional methods.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. P.K. Grant, Chairman and Managing Trustee of Ruby Hall Clinic, said, “The introduction of the Indian subcontinent’s first Robotic HIFU therapy at Ruby Hall Clinic marks an important milestone for cancer care in our region. Our commitment has always been to bring advanced and meaningful medical technology to patients in India rather than wait for it to reach us years later. Establishing this programme reflects that philosophy and ensures that our patients have access to treatment options that prioritise both outcomes and quality of life.”

Dr Baba Kalyani, Chairman and Managing Director Bharat Forge, whose family’s philanthropic support made the institute possible, emphasised the importance of local access: “I have always believed that advances in technology should be used for the good of society. This programme is a clear example of how digital and AI-enabled innovation can make a real difference to patients by offering precise, minimally invasive treatment. Under the leadership of Dr Himesh Gandhi, the Robotic HIFU system has already begun delivering encouraging results for patients. I would like to congratulate Dr Purvez Grant and his team for making it possible for us to bring this technology to society.”

Dr Simon Grant, Physician and Trustee, Ruby Hall Clinic, noted, “FOCAL ONE offers a level of precision that allows us to treat only the areas affected by cancer with the intention of maintaining functional outcomes. We assess that cancer control can be achieved while preserving day-to-day quality of life for patients.”

Ms. Natalie Grant Nanda Ruby Hall Clinic, SPL, “Bringing the Indian subcontinent’s first Robotic HIFU therapy to Pune continues that legacy while setting the foundation for the next generation of cancer care. We are honoured to have the support of the Kalyani family in making this possible.”

From a clinical perspective Dr Himesh Gandhi, Consultant Uro-oncologist and Director of Robotic Surgery at Ruby Hall Clinic, said, “For many men, the fear of the treatment is as great as the fear of the cancer itself. Robotic HIFU removes that barrier, offering a non-invasive pathway that prioritises the patient’s functional independence and quick return to daily life.”

With the establishment of the Kalyani Institute of Robotic HIFU Therapy, Ruby Hall Clinic strengthens its position as a leader in advanced oncological care with an emphasis on accessibility, clinical excellence, and improved patient experience.

PUNE: In one of the most complex neonatal emergencies managed this year, Inamdar Multispeciality Hospital, Fatima Nagar, successfully saved a newborn diagnosed antenatally with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH)—a rare but life-threatening birth anomaly in which a defect in the diaphragm allows abdominal organs to migrate into the chest cavity, severely restricting lung development.

This case stands out not only because of its rarity but also because it exemplifies high-level teamwork, rapid preparedness, and best medical practices across multiple specialties.

Antenatal Detection and High-Risk Admission

On 15/11/2025, a 28-year-old expectant mother was admitted under the expert care of Dr. Swatika Kumari, Senior Gynaecologist, after a detailed fetal anomaly scan revealed left-sided CDH with severely hypoplastic lungs.

Recognising the extreme risk of respiratory collapse immediately after birth, the hospital activated its High-Risk Delivery Protocol, ensuring that the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and surgical teams were on standby.

Birth and the Critical Golden Hour

The baby was delivered on November 15, 2025, at 9:16 AM. As anticipated, the newborn presented with severe respiratory distress, a classic indicator of compromised lung development in CDH cases.

Under the leadership of Dr. Ashwin Borade, Senior Pediatrician & Neonatologist, the NICU team initiated rapid resuscitation, advanced ventilation, and hemodynamic stabilisation. The first hour proved crucial, as the team worked swiftly to maintain oxygenation and prevent circulatory collapse.

Within hours, the neonate underwent a comprehensive evaluation to determine surgical readiness—an assessment made more challenging due to fragile lungs and compromised cardiopulmonary dynamics.

Life-Saving Surgical Intervention at 24 Hours of Life

At approximately 24 hours after birth, Dr. Pranav Jadhav, Pediatric Surgeon, performed a critical corrective surgery to reconstruct the diaphragm and reposition herniated abdominal organs.

The procedure required extraordinary precision, given:

The newborn’s severely underdeveloped lungs

High anaesthesia risk

Potential intra-operative instability

Early intervention, coupled with coordinated preparation in the NICU, proved decisive in improving long-term survival chances.

Intensive Post-Operative Care and Steady Recovery

Over the next several days, the newborn remained under continuous NICU monitoring, requiring ventilatory support and vigilant management to prevent complications such as pulmonary hypertension, sepsis, shock, or feeding issues.

NICU nurses and resident doctors provided round-the-clock care, ensuring stabilisation of respiratory and cardiovascular parameters, gradual weaning from the ventilator, and careful initiation of feeds.

During this period, Lactation Consultant Dr. Rani Balgude offered essential support to the mother. Through structured counselling, guided expression technique,s and supervised latching, she facilitated the successful initiation of breastfeeding—an outcome crucial for immunity, growth, and emotional bonding in high-risk neonates.

Discharge and A Story of Hope

On 07/12/2025, the baby was discharged in stable condition, feeding exclusively on breastmilk and showing no post-operative complications.

For the medical team, the moment symbolised the culmination of weeks of dedication and teamwork.

“Cases like this remind us that medicine is not just science—it is teamwork, trust, and compassion. Our NICU team worked around the clock, and watching this little warrior leave the hospital in good health was truly heart-warming,” said Dr. Ashwin Borade, Senior Pediatrician & Neonatologist.

“This successful outcome reinforces how early diagnosis, coordinated preparedness, and multidisciplinary expertise can turn a critical neonatal emergency into a story of survival and hope,” added Dr. Pranav Jadhav, Pediatric Surgeon.

AI holds promise to advance fetal medicine and make it more accessible – experts

PUNE: KEM Hospital, Pune, successfully conducted the third edition of the National Conference on Fetal Medicine, bringing together leading experts to discuss advancements in prenatal diagnostics, fetal therapy, and the growing importance of fetal medicine as a specialized branch.

Experts at the conference highlighted that early intervention plays a vital role in improving outcomes for both mother and baby. Conditions such as fetal growth restriction, congenital anomalies, genetic disorders, and placental insufficiencies can often be identified early, facilitating multidisciplinary planning, targeted treatment, and—in certain cases—life-saving fetal procedures before birth. The National level conference saw presentations and guidance from various renowned experts, including Dr. Manikandan Krishnan, a renowned consultant in fetal medicine, Prof. Suresh Seshadri, Director of MediScan Systems Diagnostic Ultrasound, Fetal Medicine and Training Centre in Chennai, Dr.Sudarshan S., a renowned fetal medicine expert, and Dr.Shreepad Karhade, HoD Fetal Medicine Department at KEM Hospital. The participants included gynaecologists, radiologists, and fetal medicine experts.

This conference was organised as part of the hospital’s ongoing commitment to continuous medical education, complementing its strong focus on clinical excellence and research.

Fetal medicine is rapidly emerging as a critical field in modern healthcare, focusing on the early identification, monitoring, and management of conditions affecting the unborn baby. With advancements in ultrasound technology and fetal imaging, clinicians can detect developmental anomalies as early as the first trimester. This early diagnosis allows timely interventions, informed decision-making, and better preparedness for high-risk pregnancies.

KEM Hospital’s Department of Fetal Medicine has been a pioneer in providing comprehensive prenatal services in the region. The hospital offers advanced ultrasound evaluations, fetal echocardiography, growth and Doppler studies, genetic counselling, and coordinated care for high-risk pregnancies. Its multidisciplinary team—including maternal-fetal medicine specialists, neonatologists, geneticists, and obstetricians—ensures accurate diagnosis, compassionate counselling, and seamless care from pregnancy through delivery.

Dr. Manikandan Krishnan, a renowned fetal medicine expert, said that fetal medicine has four pillars – prevention, detection of abnormalities, treatment, and support through making the couple get answers as they are overwhelmed with a lot of questions in their mind.

The challenge is that a vast majority of people, because of a lack of awareness, come much later in the pregnancy, said Dr.Sudarshan S. fetal medicine expert based out of Chennai. We need to create awareness that they should come before they plan a pregnancy, where genetic counselling will also come into the picture. Speaking about the future of fetal medicine, he said that the research is going on multiple levels. We are doing a lot of research in AI to see how machine learning algorithms can be set up to read all the pictures and whether these algorithms can be incorporated in the ultrasound machines so that primary care level persons can also see any red flags and refer them further to the specialist. Advancements in research are also happening in abnormalities and genetic problems.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Xerxes Coyaji, Medical Director, KEM Hospital, Pune, said, “Fetal Medicine is transforming the landscape of prenatal care. Early and accurate diagnosis empowers families and clinicians alike, enabling timely interventions that can significantly improve perinatal outcomes. At KEM Hospital, our commitment is to ensure that every expectant mother has access to high-quality, evidence-based fetal care.”

Fetal Medicine Consultants Dr. Shreepad Karhade and Dr. Shweta Gugale emphasized that parents and the public need to be aware that certain conditions identified during fetal life can be treated while the baby is still in the mother’s womb. These treatment options are highly complex and require an advanced level of expertise, involving extensive training, close mentoring, and a highly skilled team of multidisciplinary subspecialists. “The right patient receiving the right treatment at the right time from the right team ensures the best outcome for the unborn child,” they noted.

The event was led by Organising Chairperson Dr. Vivek Joshi, with Organising Secretaries Dr. Shreepad Karhade and Dr. Shweta Gugale, supported by an experienced scientific committee. The conference underscored KEM Hospital’s commitment to expanding fetal medicine awareness and strengthening access to advanced prenatal care for families across

PUNE: Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune’s most trusted healthcare institution, proudly announced a landmark collaboration with Emoha Eldercare, India’s most comprehensive senior care brand. This strategic partnership marks a significant leap forward in creating a structured, compassionate, and medically supervised elder care ecosystem for the city. Designed to support seniors across every stage of their recovery journey, this initiative strengthens the hospital-to-home transition by ensuring that elders receive continuous clinical oversight, personalised care, and emotional connection. The event was graced by eminent clinicians including Dr. Viraj Rao Kore and Dr. Prachee Sathe, along with Dr. Simon Grant, Physician & Trustee, Ruby Hall Clinic Mr. Behram Khodaji, CEO, Ruby Hall Clinic and & Mr.Saumyajit Roy, CEO & Co-founder, Emoha Eldercare, who highlighted the importance of Geriatric care & how is it going to support Pune’s elderly population

As a large number of seniors choose to live independently in the comfort of their homes, this shift has heightened. This shift has heightened the need for trusted elder care solutions that combine medical expertise with day-to-day support. Without reliable systems in place, elders often face challenges such as delayed response to medical emergencies, unmanaged chronic conditions, falls, medication mismanagement, cognitive decline, depression stemming from isolation, and lack of regular monitoring. Recognising this widening gap, Ruby Hall Clinic and Emoha have come together to offer a safe, dependable, and holistic framework — one that reassures families that their parents are not just looked after, but deeply cared for. This partnership provides peace of mind to children by offering structured healthcare pathways, trained carers, vital tracking, and emotional companionship for their parents in Pune.

The collaboration represents a transformational step in reimagining elder care for the region. By fusing Ruby Hall Clinic’s decades-long clinical excellence with Emoha’s specialised geriatric expertise, seniors will gain access to a robust support system tailored to their unique health and lifestyle needs. From continuous medical supervision and proactive health assessments, daily assistance, and community engagement through the Emoha App, the initiative ensures that elders remain healthy, socially connected, and emotionally engaged. This hospital-to-home care model not only reduces the risk of relapse and readmissions but also enhances recovery outcomes, confidence, and overall quality of life. With a growing senior population in Pune, this initiative sets a new benchmark for #EldersFirst future-ready healthcare.

Dr. Simon Grant, Physician & Trustee, Ruby Hall Clinic, emphasized, “In my practice, I often see seniors struggling not because of illness alone, but because of a lack of structured support at home. This partnership addresses that gap with a clinical foundation that is both compassionate and reliable. It brings together medical continuity, emotional well-being, and social engagement in a way that truly strengthens elder care.”

Saumyajit Roy, CEO & Co-Founder, Emoha Eldercare, “Elders need both physical and emotional support. By joining hands with Ruby Hall Clinic, we are bridging this gap and creating a reliable care ecosystem for senior citizens in Pune—one that elders and their families can truly depend on.”

With this collaboration, Ruby Hall Clinic and Emoha Eldercare are laying the foundation for a renewed approach to senior well-being one that prioritises safety, connection, and continuous medical care.

Over a decade of collaboration, the Singapore International Foundation, SingHealth, and Tamil Nadu’s Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine have trained about 1,150 healthcare professionals and improved care for thousands of mothers and newborns.

CHENNAI The Singapore International Foundation (SIF), SingHealth, and the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (DPHPM), Government of Tamil Nadu, today marked the conclusion of the second phase of the Enhancing Maternal and Child Health Services (EMCH) Project.

Launched in 2015, the EMCH Project aims to strengthen maternal and child healthcare across Tamil Nadu. Building on the success of the first phase, the current phase (2023–2025) extended its reach to Primary Health Centres, enhancing the management of high-risk pregnancies and neonatal emergencies, and improving outcomes across the state’s maternal and child health system.

Phase One (2015–2018) trained more than 500 healthcare professionals and contributed to reduced maternal mortality in districts including Tiruchirapalli, Chengalpattu, and Pudukottai. Phase Two built on this progress by training another 144 professionals and developing a new cadre of Master Trainers to sustain knowledge sharing within Tamil Nadu’s healthcare ecosystem.

Together, these efforts mark a decade-long collaboration that continues to enhance health outcomes while deepening Singapore-India ties through shared expertise and friendship. This initiative also represents the SIF’s fourth maternal and child health project across Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. It underscores its 30-year partnership with India – fostering collaborations, sharing expertise, and uplifting communities.

Empowering Local Healthcare Professionals for Long-Term Impact

Between 2023 and 2025, Singapore International Volunteers from Singapore’s KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital and SingHealth Polyclinics – comprising doctors and nurses – conducted multidisciplinary workshops that combined clinical training, technical assistance, and protocol review for counterparts across Tamil Nadu’s primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare institutions. These 144 professionals are now better equipped to manage obstetric and neonatal emergencies and high-risk pregnancies.

Using a Training-of-Trainers (ToT) framework, 50 participants from the trained cohort were identified as Master Trainers. They were equipped with both clinical and pedagogical skills, enabling them to facilitate peer learning within their own institutions. These Master Trainers will continue sharing their expertise across the state, ensuring that best practices are sustained and applied consistently.

Feedback from Phase Two participants indicates marked improvement in confidence and skills across key areas of obstetric and neonatal emergency management, including patient assessment, referral processes, and multidisciplinary teamwork. Collectively, these efforts are projected to benefit an estimated 20,000 mothers and newborns through better clinical outcomes and strengthened standards of care.

Corinna Chan, CEO, Singapore International Foundation, said: “The Enhancing Maternal and Child Health Services Project reflects the power of international collaboration to create meaningful, lasting impact. By uniting healthcare experts from Singapore and Tamil Nadu, we have not only strengthened clinical capabilities but also deepened the bonds of friendship between our peoples. Over the past three decades, the SIF has partnered with Indian communities on more than 20 projects in education and healthcare. Our specialist volunteers have been central to these efforts, working alongside their Indian counterparts in a spirit of mutual learning and collaboration to uplift lives. We look forward to building on this strong foundation to continue creating positive change together.”

Vijaya Rao, Director, SingHealth International Collaboration Office, said: “This partnership with SIF demonstrates the value of collaborative healthcare development. Our clinical teams have worked alongside Tamil Nadu’s healthcare professionals to share knowledge and implement practices that have strengthened maternal and child health services in the region. Drawing on the SingHealth institutions’ healthcare expertise, we’ve been able to support locally relevant solutions that improve patient outcomes. This collaboration reflects our commitment to meaningful partnerships that build sustainable healthcare capacity and create lasting benefits for the communities we serve.”

Dr A. Somasundaram, Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Tamil Nadu, said: “We are grateful for the partnership with the Singapore International Foundation and SingHealth. The knowledge exchange and technical guidance provided through this project have greatly enhanced our healthcare professionals’ confidence and competence in managing maternal and child health challenges. The collaborative training approach has strengthened local systems, improved clinical coordination, and contributed to safer outcomes for mothers and newborns. We look forward to continuing this partnership to further advance the quality and accessibility of maternal and child health services across Tamil Nadu.”

Dr Shephali Tagore, Senior Consultant, Department of Maternal Fetal Medicine, and Director of O&G International Medical Programme, said: “This project has been a deeply meaningful experience. Our Tamil Nadu counterparts demonstrated remarkable ingenuity in adapting evidence-based maternal and fetal care to local needs. Their commitment and innovation have inspired us, making this a truly collaborative exchange that strengthened our shared pursuit of safer outcomes for mothers and newborns.”

Dr Ng Chung Wai Mark, Director, Global Health, SingHealth-Duke NUS Family Medicine Academic Clinical Programme, Senior Consultant, Family Physician, SHP, said: “Enhancing the referral system is a vital step in strengthening the continuum of care for high-risk antenatal women. It helps primary care physicians identify and manage risks early, before they become emergencies. This requires a systems-based approach, by reviewing roles and care processes, auditing practices, and continuously improving care. I am inspired by the professionalism and dedication of our primary care colleagues in Tamil Nadu, whose commitment will carry these efforts forward. Collaborating on this initiative has been deeply meaningful and reaffirmed the power of shared learning in improving maternal health outcomes.”

Contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 – Good Health and Well-being – by promoting safe pregnancies and reducing maternal mortality rates, the EMCH Project is one of several Singapore-India collaborations in public health, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing healthcare excellence through cross-border learning and collaboration.

As Singapore and India commemorate 60 years of diplomatic relations, both nations continue to reaffirm that people-to-people ties remain the bedrock of our partnership. Reflecting this spirit, the EMCH Project exemplifies how collaboration between healthcare professionals can strengthen communities, foster mutual understanding, and contribute to better health outcomes across borders.
