The expert treatment turns the tide for a medical student initially unresponsive at another city hospital

PUNE: In an inspiring showcase of resilience and advanced medical care, Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital, Nagar Road shares the story of the miraculous recovery of a 22-year-old medical student from Sangli, who faced a life-threatening battle with FIRES (Febrile Infection-Related Epilepsy Syndrome). This rare neurological disorder is known for its severe, relentless seizures and high mortality rate.

Just weeks ago, the life of this vibrant young woman, an aspiring doctor, and a passionate Kathak dancer, took an unexpected turn when she began experiencing up to 40 epileptic seizures daily. At first, she did not respond to treatments and was put on a ventilator at a hospital in Pune. Her condition was very serious, and it was unclear if she would get better.

The ordeal began with a viral infection at home, something as common as the flu or a cold. However, when she started having convulsions that couldn’t be controlled at the earlier city hospital, her family made a decisive move to transfer her to Sahyadri Hospital. She was admitted to the Neuro ICU under the expert care of Dr. Nasli R. Ichaporia, Director of Neurology at Sahyadri Hospitals, Nagar Road, Pune. The entire Neurology team played a pivotal role in revising and intensifying her treatment regimen. Dr. Ichaporia, along with the dedicated Neurology ICU team, closely monitored her progress. “Witnessing her fight through those critical days and gradually regain her strength was profoundly moving,” said Dr. Ichaporia.

The diagnosis was FIRES (Febrile Infection-Related Epilepsy Syndrome). She was treated with immunoglobulin, high-dose anticonvulsants, and anesthetic agents to stop the seizures. She required high-density neuro ICU treatment and was admitted for about four weeks. Now, she is on follow-up care with Dr. Ichaporia.

“Over time, her condition stabilized; the seizures came under control, and she slowly emerged from unconsciousness. With the ventilator removed, she began to reclaim her life, walking and eventually dancing once again. “Seeing her dance Kathak so gracefully, you’d never imagine the ordeal she has overcome,” Dr. Ichaporia added.

Now back on her feet, she is not only focused on completing her medical studies but is also pursuing her dreams of winning the title of Miss India and excelling in her Kathak performances. Her recovery has been nothing short of a medical marvel, given the usual prognosis of FIRES.

“This experience has been life-changing,” she shares. “Not only has it reinforced my desire to become a doctor, but it has also deepened my appreciation for every moment and every step I take—whether in a hospital ward or on the dance floor.”

Sahyadri Hospitals is proud to have been part of her journey back to health and applauds her courage and determination. “Her story is a testament to the spirit of our patients and the dedication of our medical teams,” remarked Dr. Ichaporia.

PUNE: Sahyadri Hospitals, Pune, is proud to announce the successful treatment of a rare case of Gartner’s duct cyst in a 27-year-old engineer, Priyanka (name changed). Under the expert team of doctors of MomStory by Sahyadri Hospitals of Dr. Mini Salunkhe and Dr. Gauri Jagdale, Priyanka underwent surgical excision (Marsupialization) of an intact cyst, marking a significant milestone in medical treatment.

The procedure, performed at Sahyadri Hospitals, Hadapsar involved the surgical excision of an intact cyst with a small incision on the inner side of the labia majora. This precise and delicate surgical procedure enabled the thorough extraction of a cyst measuring around 5 cm × 5 cm, a size notably larger than typical cases, making it a rare and challenging case. Following the procedure, Priyanka demonstrated impressive recovery, regaining the ability to walk just six hours after undergoing surgery.

Dr. Mini Salunkhe, Director & Head of Department – Obstetrics at MomStory by Sahyadri, commenting on the case, stated, “Gartner’s duct cysts are a rare occurrence, particularly the size and location of Priyanka’s cyst presented unique challenges. We are pleased with the successful outcome of the surgical excision, achieving full removal of the cyst with minimal impact on the patient’s mobility and recovery.”

Gartner’s duct cysts are found in 20-25% of females, with Gartner’s duct cysts accounting for only 1% of these cases, making Priyanka’s case truly exceptional. The expertise and collaboration between Dr. Salunkhe and Dr. Jagdale, coupled with the advanced medical facilities at Sahyadri Hospitals, made this successful treatment possible.

Sahyadri Hospitals is committed to delivering exceptional medical care and continues to pioneer advanced procedures and treatments, ensuring the well-being of its patients.

Understanding Gartner’s duct cyst – Gartner’s duct cyst is a generally asymptomatic cyst that typically measures less than 2 cm. It is often diagnosed through pelvic examination and may require surgical intervention for treatment, especially when the cyst is larger. Although symptoms are usually absent, the cyst can occasionally grow in size. The condition is associated with the Gartner’s duct, a remnant of the Wolffian duct in females. Conservative management and follow-up are options for smaller cysts, while surgical approaches are considered for larger ones.

PUNE: Sahyadri Hospitals, one of Maharashtra’s largest hospital chains, proudly announces a ground-breaking commercial collaboration with ImmunoACT to introduce CAR-T cell therapies in Pune. As one of the prominent healthcare facilities, Sahyadri Hospitals, equipped with comprehensive hematology treatment centers, is set to provide access to NexCAR19 (Actalycabtagene autoleucel). This CAR-T cell therapy is designed to treat relapsed or refractory B-cell lymphoma and B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients aged 15 and above.

“The introduction of CAR-T cell therapy marks a significant leap in our commitment to providing cutting-edge care for cancer patients. This innovative approach reflects our continuous endeavor to push the boundaries of cancer treatment, offering patients the most advanced therapeutic options available,” states Abrarali Dalal, Director & CEO of Sahyadri Hospitals. “The integration of CAR-T cell therapy sets a new benchmark in treating complex blood cancers, aligning with our mission to offer the highest standard of precision medicine. This launch places Sahyadri Hospitals at the frontline of innovative treatments for blood disorders, promising to significantly improve the lives of patients in Pune and Maharashtra.”

Commonly known as “living drugs,” these personalized therapies are manufactured by genetically modifying a patient’s T-cells using a viral vector, specifically targeting certain types of cancer cells. NexCAR19, the first CAR-T therapy fully developed and manufactured in India, is now among approximately ten such therapies available commercially worldwide. While similar therapies can cost several hundred thousand dollars in the United States, it is planned to be offered at almost one-tenth of this cost.

Outcomes in B-cell cancers, where one or more lines of treatment have failed, are generally dismal. Sahyadri’s medical and haemato-oncologists intend to deploy NexCAR19 to enhance the standard of care, which currently includes chemotherapy, monoclonal antibodies, and bone marrow transplant. NexCAR19 will be initially available at Sahyadri’s Deccan Gymkhana center in Pune, serving patients across western India and beyond.

Dr. Shashikant Apte, M.D., FRCPA, Head of the Department of Haematology & Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Sahyadri Hospitals, stated, “At Sahyadri Hospitals, we treat patients from various backgrounds, conducting approximately 45-50 bone marrow transplants annually. With the availability of NexCAR19, we now have a significant opportunity to improve outcomes and the quality of life for patients with B-cell malignancies. We hope that similar cell therapies will soon be accessible for other forms of hematological cancers, addressing a critically unmet need.”

Shirish Arya, Co-Founder and Director of Business Development & Corporate Strategy at ImmunoACT commented, “Sahyadri Hospitals’ cutting-edge infrastructure and their clinically forward-thinking oncologists will receive our full support to ensure the immediate and affordable availability of NexCAR19 to patients. Our efforts at ImmunoACT, driven by innovation in research, are also focused on enhancing the scalability of our robust CAR-T platform to extend the benefits of this life-saving therapy to as many patients as possible.”
