With close to four decades of experience in surgical oncology, Dr. Chaturvedi returns to Apollo, bringing unparalleled clinical expertise and deep institutional leadership shaped over years of advancing cancer care in India. His return marks a significant step in Apollo’s long-term commitment to building a cancer care system that is not only expansive in reach but consistent in quality, ensuring that patients across India have access to the subspecialised, organ-specific, and technology-driven treatment they deserve.

Over 38 years, he has managed complex cases across head and neck, breast, thoracic, gastrointestinal, gynaecologic, and other malignancies, with specialised expertise in robotic and minimally invasive procedures and radiofrequency ablation. He established one of North India’s leading cancer ecosystems, implementing organ-specific units, multidisciplinary tumour boards, and national research collaborations. As organising secretary of the first Indian Cancer Congress in 2013, he co-created and executed a landmark oncology event that set a benchmark for future platforms. He has also served as the president of leading professional bodies, including the Indian Society of Oncology, the Indian Association of Surgical Oncology, and the Oncology Forum, further strengthening his leadership in the field.

Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd, said: “At Apollo Hospitals, we firmly believe that health is a national priority and a shared responsibility. Further, cancer care in India demands availability, precision, consistency, and institutions that are built to deliver outcomes at scale. Dr. Chaturvedi is one of the finest surgical oncologists, renowned worldwide. An institution builder, his acumen in assembling the right teams, introducing contemporary processes, and creating a culture of clinical excellence is exactly what the Apollo Oncology Network needs at this stage of its growth. His return to Apollo is a homecoming, and we are confident that under his leadership, we will reach significantly more patients with the quality of care they deserve, and take us closer to our mission.”

A longstanding advocate for cancer prevention and tobacco control, Dr. Chaturvedi has played an influential role in shaping the policy of oncology and awareness at a national level.

Further, it is a homecoming for Dr Chaturvedi, who previously served as Senior Consultant, Surgical Oncology at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals between 2000 and 2004.

Dr. Harit Kumar Chaturvedi, CEO and Clinical Head, Apollo Oncology Network, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited, said: “I am deeply honoured to return to an institution that has consistently set the benchmark for cancer care in India. Apollo has built something truly remarkable, a network with the scale, the technology, and the clinical intent to make a meaningful difference in patients’ lives. My goal is to build on this strong foundation by deepening subspecialisation, expanding robotic and minimally invasive surgical capabilities, and strengthening multidisciplinary care protocols across every facility. I look forward to contributing to Apollo’s vision of making world-class oncology accessible to every Indian who needs it, regardless of where they live.”

He is joined by a team of over 25 highly specialised oncologists, further strengthening Apollo’s capability to deliver comprehensive, multidisciplinary, and efficient cancer care across diverse treatment pathways. Apollo Hospitals remains steadfast in its commitment to transforming cancer care in India through subspecialisation, early detection, and equitable access to treatment. Dr. Chaturvedi will lead the Apollo Oncology Network, which has been breathing hope into lives for over 30 years. With over 400 oncologists to oversee the delivery of high-end precision Oncology Therapy, the Network is spread across India to help people win over cancer.

PUNE: Noble Hospital and Research Centre has announced the launch of its Centre of Excellence for Obesity, Metabolic Diseases and Advanced Bariatric Sciences, a comprehensive facility dedicated to the scientific and multidisciplinary management of obesity and related disorders. The centre was inaugurated by Mr. Naval Kishor Ram, Commissioner, Pune Municipal Corporation, in the presence of Dilip Mane, Chairman and Managing Director, Noble Hospitals and Research Centre, and Dr. Divij Mane, Dy. Managing Director, Dr. Sanjay Pathare, Group Executive Officer, Noble Hospitals and Research Centre.

The initiative comes at a time when obesity is increasingly recognized as a medical condition rather than merely a lifestyle issue. Recently, obesity has been formally classified as a disease in international medical coding systems (ICD), enabling structured treatment approaches including medical therapies and advanced bariatric procedures.

Mr.Naval Kishor Ram, Commissioner, Pune Municipal Corporation, said that there is a lack of awareness about Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in people. We inculcate the importance of early and proper diagnosis. Commending the initiative, he said that through this centre, Noble Hospital has taken a very important step to address the very root of obesity.

One of its kind, an integrated and comprehensive centre for obesity

This is one of its kind centres for the management of obesity with a holistic approach through integrated and comprehensive care for all kinds of obesity for adults as well as small children. Individuals seeking medical advice for obesity are guided by an obesity management group comprising a multidisciplinary team, right from a physician to a surgeon to a psychologist, delivering world-class non-surgical as well as surgical treatment regulated by international standards.

The new centre will offer integrated care through a multidisciplinary team, including bariatric medicine physicians, bariatric surgeon specialists, cosmetic-plastic surgeons, obesity and metabolic health nutritionists, bariatric physiotherapists, obesity educators, and dedicated counsellors.

The facility will provide advanced diagnostic and therapeutic options such as advanced body composition analysis, DEXA scan unit, modern bariatric surgery infrastructure like robotics, and Non-invasive weight-loss procedures like the Allurion endoscopic gastric balloon.

Being the pioneers in novel injectable medical therapies for weight loss, the hospital will integrate its experienced Bariatric physician team in this center of excellence.

To complete the transformation process, body contouring, including suitable surgical or non-surgical procedures designed to remove excess, sagging skin and stubborn fat deposits following weight loss, will also be available under one roof. The facility will also house an advanced bariatric operating table for enhanced patient safety.

The multidisciplinary team includes Dr. Reema Kashiva, Bariatric Physician, Dr. Parmeshwar Bambrule, Bariatric Surgeon, Dr. Ravi Swaminathan, Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Sarika Satav, Bariatric Clinical Nutritionist, Dt. Akshay Pawar, Dietician, Dr. Reshma Kangude-Lifestyle Educator, Dr. Bhupendra Gupta, Physiotherapist, Dr.Suhas Khaire, Endocrinologist, and Dr. Sheetal Harpale, Clinical Psychologist.

Dr. Reema Kashiva, Programme Director – Centre of Excellence for Obesity, Metabolic Diseases and Advanced Bariatric Sciences at Noble Hospitals, said that untreated obesity is associated with a lot of health complications, including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, metabolic disorders, and many other diseases. Early and scientific intervention can significantly reduce these risks and improve quality of life.

Obesity needs to be addressed at its roots, with scientific management at each stage

According to the team at the centre, “For years, we were treating the complications of obesity rather than the disease itself. With the recognition of obesity as a medical condition and the availability of effective therapies, it is now possible to intervene early and prevent associated complications. People need guidance at every stage of weight management. Scientific, supervised, and team-based management of obesity is the need of the hour.”

While people have apprehensions about the side effects of medications, most of these can be tackled when taken under medical supervision. What should be considered is the risk of having weight versus the benefit of using injectable medicines to reduce weight and live a better quality of life in the future, and aiming to reduce the future complications of obesity.

The centre aims to create greater public awareness about obesity as a treatable disease and create awareness amongst people with a BMI above 30, or above 27 with comorbid conditions, to seek timely medical consultation.

Dr. Sanjay Pathare, Group Executive Officer, Noble Hospitals and Research Center, said that “Obesity today is increasingly driven by poor dietary habits, over-nutrition, sedentary lifestyles, and stress, not just in adults but also in small children, and early and effective obesity management can significantly reduce the risk of multiple chronic diseases.“

Dr. Divij Mane, Deputy Managing Director, Noble Hospitals, said, “Not every obese patient needs surgery. In a center of excellence, precise BMI, BCA, and comorbidity assessment is done. Non-surgical options are primarily considered. Risks such as Type 2 Diabetes, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, hypertension, and heart disease are proactively evaluated, and appropriate treatment is made available under one roof. We aim to ensure the right care plan from the right team of experts reaches every individual, from the treatment phase to follow-up care to ensure long-term well-being.”

With this integrated super-specialist team approach, Noble Hospitals seeks to strengthen its commitment to advanced metabolic care and preventive healthcare for patients in Pune and across the region.

Dr. Dileep Mane, Chairman and Managing Director, Noble Hospitals, said that “Obesity is a complex, multi-faceted disease; hence, instead of multiple standalone consults, when a dedicated team of experts jointly provides an integrated care plan tailored to each individual’s needs, you get effective and more sustainable outcomes.“

Through this Centre for Obesity, Metabolic Diseases and Advanced Bariatric Sciences, we aim to redefine obesity care with integrated treatment, advanced technology, and sustained patient support

PUNE: Apollo Hospitals Pune, the city’s first 400-bed quaternary care centre, today announced the launch of its World Cancer Month awareness initiative, ‘Zero to Hero’, a campaign designed to highlight the life-saving impact of detecting cancer at its earliest stages. The initiative underscores Apollo’s core belief that cancer is conquerable when identified early, and brings together oncologists, survivors, and healthcare leaders to amplify the importance of screening, prevention, and timely intervention.

Apollo Hospitals Pune’s Oncology Centre of Excellence offers comprehensive cancer care supported by state-of-the-art technology and multidisciplinary expertise. The centre is equipped with AI-enabled PET-CT for highly accurate early detection, the VARIAN EDGE LINAC for precise, targeted radiation therapy, and the Da Vinci Xi robotic system for complex cancer surgeries across urological, gynaecological, gastrointestinal, and head and neck cancers. Backed by advanced diagnostics, precision radiation, and robotic surgery, the centre delivers an integrated approach spanning early detection, accurate diagnosis, advanced treatment, and improved recovery, reinforcing Apollo’s commitment to improving cancer outcomes through technology-led, patient-centric care.

Speaking on the launch, Dr. Manisha Karmarkar, CEO, Apollo Hospitals Pune, said, “Early cancer detection and prevention are among the most powerful tools in the fight against cancer. Early intervention significantly improves survival and reinforces Apollo’s long-standing belief that cancer can be defeated. However, screening only works when people participate. Fear, stigma, misinformation, and lack of awareness often delay diagnosis. At Apollo Hospitals Pune, our comprehensive ProHealth programme, India’s first AI-powered preventive health programme, empowers individuals to take proactive control of their health through advanced screening and risk assessment.”

Dr. Snita Sinukumar, Senior Surgical Oncologist, Robotic and HIPEC Specialist, said, “Nearly 40 to 50% of cancers can be prevented or detected early through screening and lifestyle measures. Tests such as digital mammography, Pap smear, low-dose CT scans, colonoscopy, PSA testing, and oral examinations can identify cancer even before symptoms appear. When detected early, survival rates can improve to as high as 80 to 90% or more.”

The Oncology Team at Apollo Hospital, Pune, further added, “Many cancers can be prevented through lifestyle choices and public health efforts. Avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, eating fruits and vegetables, sun protection, and vaccines like HPV and Hepatitis B are key. Governments should ensure access to screening and health campaigns, while healthcare, schools, and workplaces promote healthy habits and provide guidance at an early age.”

Equally important is recognising early warning signs and overcoming the tendency to delay medical check-ups, a trend particularly common in men’s health. Symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, persistent fatigue, unusual bleeding, new lumps, or a chronic cough lasting more than three weeks should never be ignored. While these signs do not always indicate cancer, early detection is critical for successful treatment, especially for prostate, kidney, and bladder cancers, which may be asymptomatic in their early stages. Modern interventions, such as advanced robotic surgery, have made many early-stage cancers highly treatable or even completely curable. Therefore, it is essential to listen to your body, use simple screening tests such as the PSA blood test, and consult a doctor promptly if any symptoms persist.

Through initiatives such as ‘Zero to Hero’, Apollo Hospitals Pune aims to build greater awareness, encourage proactive health-seeking behaviour, and empower individuals to take timely action, reinforcing its ongoing commitment to improving cancer outcomes through early detection and advanced care.

Dignitaries like Dr. Pramod Chaudhari, Parimal Chaudhari, Sunanda Nisal, Dr. Usha Katti, Dr. Pradyumna Vaidya, Dr. Dhanshree Bhide, Dr. Vinay Kulkarni from the Dermatology Department, neurosurgeon Dr. Kaustubh Dindorkar from the Neurology Department, and renowned surgeon Dr. Utkrant Kurlekar were present during the program that was organized at DMH to mark the installation of the above equipment.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Pramod Chaudhari said, “The dermatology department seems somewhat neglected. Dr. Vinay Kulkarni, a specialist in this department, drew my attention to it. There is a need for more focus here, and there is good scope for research. I was attracted by the word ‘research’ because, in my opinion, research is essential everywhere.”

Parimal Chaudhari said, “Deciding about the department for donating the equipment was a tough process. But then we decided to choose the department of dermatology, which is not in the limelight much.”

Sunanda Nisal said, “The Chaudhari family has a tradition of national service and participation in the freedom struggle. The values of supporting institutions and individuals who do excellent work in the fields of nation-building, society, and education have been passed down to the next generation from their mother, a teacher, and their father, a freedom fighter. The medical equipment donated to the hospital is a part of these values.” Dr. Usha Katti also shared her thoughts.”

On behalf of the DMH, Dr. Pradyumna Vaidya, Dr. Vinay Kulkarni, and Dr. Dhanshree Bhide from the Dermatology Department, and neurosurgeon Dr. Kaustubh Dindorkar from the Neurology Department, provided a detailed technical explanation of the medical equipment. Sanika Joshi presented the vote of thanks.

Comprehensive proposals: IV infusions, wound care, diagnostics, and telemedicine consultations are some of the ways by which routines can be kept even if the clinics are closed or are overwhelmed.

Scheduling without constraints: Personalized strategies are in line with family celebrations, thus giving the assurance of peace during the holidays, which are free from guilt.

AI holds promise to advance fetal medicine and make it more accessible – experts

PUNE: KEM Hospital, Pune, successfully conducted the third edition of the National Conference on Fetal Medicine, bringing together leading experts to discuss advancements in prenatal diagnostics, fetal therapy, and the growing importance of fetal medicine as a specialized branch.

Experts at the conference highlighted that early intervention plays a vital role in improving outcomes for both mother and baby. Conditions such as fetal growth restriction, congenital anomalies, genetic disorders, and placental insufficiencies can often be identified early, facilitating multidisciplinary planning, targeted treatment, and—in certain cases—life-saving fetal procedures before birth. The National level conference saw presentations and guidance from various renowned experts, including Dr. Manikandan Krishnan, a renowned consultant in fetal medicine, Prof. Suresh Seshadri, Director of MediScan Systems Diagnostic Ultrasound, Fetal Medicine and Training Centre in Chennai, Dr.Sudarshan S., a renowned fetal medicine expert, and Dr.Shreepad Karhade, HoD Fetal Medicine Department at KEM Hospital. The participants included gynaecologists, radiologists, and fetal medicine experts.

This conference was organised as part of the hospital’s ongoing commitment to continuous medical education, complementing its strong focus on clinical excellence and research.

Fetal medicine is rapidly emerging as a critical field in modern healthcare, focusing on the early identification, monitoring, and management of conditions affecting the unborn baby. With advancements in ultrasound technology and fetal imaging, clinicians can detect developmental anomalies as early as the first trimester. This early diagnosis allows timely interventions, informed decision-making, and better preparedness for high-risk pregnancies.

KEM Hospital’s Department of Fetal Medicine has been a pioneer in providing comprehensive prenatal services in the region. The hospital offers advanced ultrasound evaluations, fetal echocardiography, growth and Doppler studies, genetic counselling, and coordinated care for high-risk pregnancies. Its multidisciplinary team—including maternal-fetal medicine specialists, neonatologists, geneticists, and obstetricians—ensures accurate diagnosis, compassionate counselling, and seamless care from pregnancy through delivery.

Dr. Manikandan Krishnan, a renowned fetal medicine expert, said that fetal medicine has four pillars – prevention, detection of abnormalities, treatment, and support through making the couple get answers as they are overwhelmed with a lot of questions in their mind.

The challenge is that a vast majority of people, because of a lack of awareness, come much later in the pregnancy, said Dr.Sudarshan S. fetal medicine expert based out of Chennai. We need to create awareness that they should come before they plan a pregnancy, where genetic counselling will also come into the picture. Speaking about the future of fetal medicine, he said that the research is going on multiple levels. We are doing a lot of research in AI to see how machine learning algorithms can be set up to read all the pictures and whether these algorithms can be incorporated in the ultrasound machines so that primary care level persons can also see any red flags and refer them further to the specialist. Advancements in research are also happening in abnormalities and genetic problems.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Xerxes Coyaji, Medical Director, KEM Hospital, Pune, said, “Fetal Medicine is transforming the landscape of prenatal care. Early and accurate diagnosis empowers families and clinicians alike, enabling timely interventions that can significantly improve perinatal outcomes. At KEM Hospital, our commitment is to ensure that every expectant mother has access to high-quality, evidence-based fetal care.”

Fetal Medicine Consultants Dr. Shreepad Karhade and Dr. Shweta Gugale emphasized that parents and the public need to be aware that certain conditions identified during fetal life can be treated while the baby is still in the mother’s womb. These treatment options are highly complex and require an advanced level of expertise, involving extensive training, close mentoring, and a highly skilled team of multidisciplinary subspecialists. “The right patient receiving the right treatment at the right time from the right team ensures the best outcome for the unborn child,” they noted.

The event was led by Organising Chairperson Dr. Vivek Joshi, with Organising Secretaries Dr. Shreepad Karhade and Dr. Shweta Gugale, supported by an experienced scientific committee. The conference underscored KEM Hospital’s commitment to expanding fetal medicine awareness and strengthening access to advanced prenatal care for families across

BENGALURU: Dr. Ganesh Shenoy, Director of Surgical Gastroenterology and Robotic Surgery at Kauvery Hospital, Electronic City, Bengaluru, has set a world record of completing the most number of robotic hernia surgeries-13, by a single surgeon using a single da Vinci surgical system in a single day. This achievement showcases Dr. Shenoy’s extraordinary surgical skill, consistency, and mastery of the advanced robotic technology.

“This achievement is not just about numbers”, , but about demonstrating what is possible when technology and skill converge. Each one of the 13 patients received individualized attention with a commitment to safety, and all procedures were completed with zero errors or complications. The use of robotic-assisted surgery was pivotal. It allowed for exceptional precision and greatly reduced surgeon fatigue, which would have been difficult, if not impossible, had these cases been performed laparoscopically. My priority in every case is patient safety and optimal outcomes,” said Dr. Shenoy, Director of Surgical Gastroenterology and Robotic Surgery-Kauvery Hospital, Electronic City, Bengaluru

The remarkable surgical marathon was witnessed firsthand by Dr. Deepraj Bhandarkar, Former President of the Hernia Society of India, who was visiting the hospital. His presence lends authoritative credibility to this milestone, confirming the safe, precise, and efficient execution of these complex procedures.

“Dr. Ganesh Shenoy’s accomplishment is a testament to his dedication and technical excellence,” said Dr. Bhandarkar. “Performing robotic hernia repairs at this scale in a day, with full focus on patient safety and surgical precision, is truly outstanding and inspiring for the surgical community. The robotic system’s ability to reduce surgeon fatigue significantly enhances the precision and safety achievable during such a marathon, which would otherwise be unthinkable laparoscopically.” Says Dr. Deepraj Bhandarkar, Former President of the Hernia Society of India.

The record has also been recognized by Intuitive, the makers of the da Vinci surgical robot, who played a key supporting role by providing robotic instrumentation, workflow planning, and rapid system turnaround, enabling seamless transitions between cases. Rohit Mahajan, Vice President and General Manager, Intuitive India, said, “This achievement highlights the impact created when highly organized surgical teams adopt best-in-class surgical technologies like the da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery platform to maximize throughput and reduce variability in patient outcomes. By prioritizing care team training and streamlining operational workflows, the Kauvery Hospital team has demonstrated what’s possible in expanding patient access to consistent, high-quality surgical care. We are proud to support this exceptional team in their pursuit of this milestone in patient care.”

Kauvery Hospital continues its commitment to delivering unparalleled patient safety, zero surgical errors, and excellent clinical outcomes by combining cutting-edge technology with exceptional surgical talent. This feat underlines the institution’s status as a Centre of Excellence in Hernia Surgery, accredited by the Asia Pacific Hernia Society and the Hernia Society of India.

A pioneering collaboration that integrates Emotion AI into preventive healthcare, helping individuals understand their emotions that affect physical health.

PUNE: Jehangir Wellness Centre (JWC), Pune, has become the first healthcare institution in the world to formally integrate AI-based emotional assessments into preventive care through its partnership with Emoscape, a medical-grade Emotion AI platform created by Nihilent. This collaboration reflects a significant step forward in the convergence of emotional and physical well-being, placing India at the forefront of human-centric innovation in healthcare.

With the inclusion of Emoscape, every individual visiting Jehangir Wellness Centre now has access to a non-invasive emotional scan that evaluates nine core emotions (The Navarasas): Raudra, Bhayanaka, Hasya, Shringara, Adbhuta, Bibhatsa, Shanta, Veera, and Karuna. In 60 seconds, the platform maps emotional intensities and trends using safe, contactless technology. These results are then interpreted in the context of physical health markers, offering new insight into how emotional patterns may be influencing physiological symptoms or impacting the recovery process.

By offering this scan as a part of routine wellness checks, Jehangir Wellness Centre is advancing a new approach to early detection and preventive care where emotional well-being is not an adjunct but a core diagnostic component.

During her special address, Lt. Gen. Dr. Madhuri Kanitkar (Retd), Former Vice-Chancellor, Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Ex Dean AFMC, said, “Medicine is not only about curing disease; it is about understanding the human being in totality. Emoscape helps understand emotions through the lens of science and technology, bringing evidence to what we intuitively know: that emotional health is inseparable from physical health. This inauguration at Jehangir Wellness Centre is an important step in that direction.

“At Jehangir Wellness Centre, we have always believed that true wellness lies in understanding the connection between the mind and body. Today, our centre marks yet another milestone at the forefront of progressive healthcare by integrating AI-driven emotional assessment into our holistic care,” said Cowas Jehangir, Trustee – Jehangir Hospital.

“At Nihilent, our mission has always been to humanise technology, to make innovation serve life itself. One of the most meaningful ways to do that is by helping healthcare see what has always been invisible: our emotions. Emoscape was born from that belief, that the mind and body are one system, and that understanding emotions is essential to healing. Seeing it now become part of healthcare, helping doctors and patients connect emotional patterns with physical well-being, is deeply rewarding,” said L.C. Singh, Founder- Executive Vice Chairman, Nihilent.

“Emoscape represents the next frontier in integrative healthcare. It bridges emotional awareness with medical insight, giving us a more complete understanding of each individual’s health journey. At Jehangir Wellness Centre, our commitment has always been to the overall well-being of an individual. This collaboration with Nihilent is a step toward more complete, compassionate healthcare,” said Vinod Sawantwadkar, CEO, Jehangir Hospital.

At Jehangir Wellness Centre, emoscape’s emotional assessment data is used alongside medical reports and assessments to create a holistic view of the patient and advise the interventions accordingly. Emoscape’s integration at JWC is already drawing interest across age groups. From working professionals managing burnout to adolescents facing identity shifts and from senior citizens navigating loneliness to wellness seekers aiming to improve resilience, clients are experiencing the value of emotional clarity in clinical contexts. The platform has become a powerful complement to JWC’s vision of comprehensive, integrative wellness. Each scan is confidential and processed ethically, following the highest standards of data privacy.

This launch also marks Emoscape’s first institutional partnership within the healthcare sector. Rigorously tested across healthcare, learning, sports, and corporate settings, Emoscape’s integration at Jehangir Wellness Centre marks a step toward broader adoption in hospitals, clinics, and medical institutions. By offering Emoscape to patients as a formal part of its wellness protocols, Jehangir Wellness Centre is championing a more evolved, empathetic model of care. It signals a future where emotions are not peripheral but central to the healing process and where technology plays an enabling role in restoring the balance between mind and body.

This collaboration between Nihilent and Jehangir Wellness Centre places Pune on the global innovation map, demonstrating that the next frontier of medicine lies not only in cutting-edge technology but also in the courage to reimagine care through the lens of humanity.
