MUMBAI: In a landmark event attended by prominent diamond industry dignitaries and industry leaders, the International Gemological Institute (IGI) proudly launched its cutting-edge Light Performance analysis — a proprietary innovation developed by IGI’s Research & Development team. The session was conducted by John Pollard, IGI’s Senior Director of Education, from Dallas, USA, who was specially flown in for the occasion. The session underscored IGI’s commitment to going beyond the traditional 4Cs by offering deeper, science-based insights into a diamond’s optical beauty and brilliance.

The Light Performance provides an advanced cut analysis grading technique and is especially important for diamonds that appear identical on paper – same 4Cs – but differ noticeably in sparkle and visual presence. For retailers and brands, the Light Performance score enables clearer product differentiation and storytelling. For consumers, it brings greater clarity, confidence, and control, ensuring they’re investing in diamonds that deliver exceptional beauty. This service benefits both the industry and consumers by establishing a consistent, wide-range standard for evaluating and communicating a diamond’s visual performance. Light Performance reports are available for diamonds which achieve an “Exceptional” score – whether natural or lab-grown – across IGI’s global grading facilities. IGI will also extend the Light Performance service to reports previously graded by external laboratories, boosting their market appeal.

Tehmasp Printer, MD and CEO, IGI, stated:

“At IGI, our commitment lies in bringing knowledge and transparency to every diamond we certify. Light Performance analysis measures what we often refer to as the ‘true beauty’ of a diamond in a quantifiable, scientific way. By extending our analysis to fancy shapes and flexible report formats, we are expanding our provision of meaningful information with scientific precision, increasing confidence for a wider audience of end consumers.”

Following IGI’s Light Performance Analysis, qualifying diamonds receive a primary score for overall performance, along with individual scores for three key components: Brightness (all reflected and refracted white light), Fire(dispersed light seen as flashes of color), and Contrast (balance and intensity of bright and dark areas). The scoring breakdown appears visually on IGI’s Light Performance Report, alongside the 4Cs, offering a complete view of diamond quality. Each score is scientifically repeatable and based on how the diamond’s specific measurements, angles, and facet groups interact with light. A Structured Light Environment representation, modeled with ray-tracing software, serves as performance proof. These details reveal how the diamond reflects and refracts light – the main drivers of brilliance and sparkle in the real-world settings.

A standout feature of the system involves IGI’s proprietary contrast evaluation, which uses a real-world distance of 40cm for primary assessment.

“Transparency and full diamond analysis are the cornerstones of our work.” Printer continued. “Every gem we evaluate – natural or lab-grown – is assessed with the same precision, expertise, and commitment to quality.”

“Adding Light Performance bridges a gap between the jeweler’s grading loupe and the all-important eyes of the consumer. In addition to the traditional 4Cs, this report additionally speaks to the real-world brightness, rainbow flashes, and vivid contrast seen during scintillation – the things consumers love most about diamonds,”

stated John Pollard, Senior Director of Education at IGI, USA.

PAT for Q2 2025 was reported as INR 1,265 Mn, a growth of 63% on a year-on-year basis, with PAT margins at 42% vs 30% in Q2 2024.

For the Half year ended June 2025, the Company has reported 13% growth in revenues from operations and 23% growth in EBITDA in H1 2025 when compared with H1 2024. EBITDA margins are up from 56% in H1 2024 to 61% in H1 2025. The consolidated PAT for H1 2025 stood at INR 2,673 Mn, showing a 31% increase over H1 2024, with margins up from 38% in H1 2024 to 44% in H1 2025

Key financial highlights – IGI Consolidated (INR in MN):

Quarter

Q2 2024

Q2 2025

YOY Growth %

Revenue

2,600

3,009

16%

PBT

1,140

1,750

53%

PAT

778

1,265

63%

EBITDA

1,268

1,735

37%

EPS (Basic)

1.96

2.92

49%

Tehmasp Printer, Managing Director and CEO of IGI, said,

“I am happy to report the Company has seen strong growth momentum across all its segments compared to the previous quarter.

For over a century, the 4Cs—cut, color, clarity, and carat—have served as the universal language of diamond quality. At IGI, we uphold these standards not out of convention, but out of a deep respect for the consumer’s right to make informed decisions and feel confident in every purchase. Modern consumers are increasingly discerning—they demand transparency, authenticity, and traceability. In today’s market, identifying the origin of a diamond—whether natural or lab-grown—has become critically important, both for ethical assurance and value clarity.

At IGI, we have gone beyond the traditional 4Cs and have introduced a proprietary ‘Light Performance Analysis’, which is a scientific assessment that measures how a diamond interacts with light. This would provide a deeper insight into critical visual attributes—brightness, fire, and contrast—which collectively define a diamond’s true ‘sparkle’.

Additionally, along with our core segments of natural diamond certification and lab-grown diamond certification, we are also seeing a strong demand for certification of natural diamond and lab-grown diamond jewelry, which will further accelerate the growth of our business in the quarters to come.”

MUMBAI: The International Gemological Institute (IGI), the leading grader of lab-grown diamonds globally, has confirmed it will continue applying the universal 4Cs grading to all diamonds, whether natural or lab-grown. This affirmation comes as many in the industry grapple with the unprecedented shift by others to a different, diluted scale for lab-grown diamonds sent to their locations.

IGI pioneered lab-grown diamond grading in 2005. Recognizing their identical properties to natural diamonds, IGI applied the existing 4Cs to prevent industry and consumer confusion, mirroring the approach taken in the cultured pearl market.

The statement released by the institute reads: “Since its inception, IGI has remained steadfast in its mission as an independent, third-party authentication body – unbiased and free from external influence. Our commitment to transparency, integrity, and scientific accuracy has earned us the trust of consumers, manufacturers, and retailers around the world.

Every diamond we certify undergoes a rigorous 14-step grading process, carried out by expert gemologists using state-of-the-art equipment – upholding accuracy, impartiality, and trust at every step.

IGI Reaffirms Its Commitment to Full 4Cs Grading Standards for Natural and Lab-Grown Diamonds. For nearly a century, the 4Cs – Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat – have served as the universal language for assessing diamond quality. At IGI, we uphold these standards not merely out of tradition, but from a deep-rooted belief in the consumer’s right to transparency, knowledge, and confidence.

At IGI, we’re not just grading diamonds – we’re safeguarding the trust that consumers place in us.”

A Global Leader with Recognized Credentials

With 31 laboratories across 10 countries, IGI operates the world’s largest gem lab network. Our leadership in diamond and gemstone certification is built on:

ISO 17025 accreditation, validating our technical precision and adherence to international standards.

Big Four as our internal auditors, reinforcing robust internal governance.

Membership with the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) reflects our ethical responsibility and sustainability commitment.

Uniquely, IGI is the only gemological laboratory in the world listed on the stock exchange, underscoring our financial transparency and global accountability.
