After the flag hoisting, a vibrant cultural program unfolded. The tiny tots charmed everyone with their performance on Project Sindoor, Kesari, while our senior citizens rendered a soulful Desh Bhakti song that resonated deeply. Manish Joshi’s lively anchoring, interspersed with fun knowledge questions for children, kept the audience engaged and entertained.

Among the highlights were two remarkable speeches: young Yesha Singh’s thought-provoking take on “Should moral values be given more importance than academic scores?” and Krishav Shukla’s impressive address on “India’s Advancement in Defence & Technology” – both delivered with extraordinary maturity for their age.

Music and poetry added their magic too – a melodious duet by Unnikrishnan & Akshat won an encore, Desh Bhakti songs by our very own Sangeet Sena and FC Sadasya stirred patriotic pride, and Mr. Tarun Jain’s witty poem left the audience in laughter.

The occasion featured a striking hyper-realistic rangoli created by artist Asavari Lingade and a series of patriotic paintings curated by Art Plus Connect. This tribute to the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force was inaugurated by two distinguished defenders of the nation, Lt. General Sudarshan Hasabnis (PVSM, VSM, ADC, Retd Deputy Chief of Army Staff) and Major Prajakta Desai, India’s first woman UAV Observer Pilot. Their presence added depth to the celebration as guests paused to reflect on the courage and commitment of India’s armed forces while admiring the scale and intricacy of the artworks.

The day’s proceedings began with the arrival of the dignitaries at the North Gate, accompanied by cadets in a ceremonial march to view the paintings before moving to the Rangoli area for the formal inauguration. A ribbon-cutting and lamp lighting ceremony took place in the presence of over 100 students from Eon Gyanankur School, Kharadi, and The Little Millennium School, who carried tricolor balloons and flags.

Speaking at the event, Major Prajakta Desai said, “Witnessing such a magnificent work of art that honours our Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force is truly heartwarming, and being part of this celebration at Phoenix Marketcity Pune. I am grateful to the motherland where I was born, and I believe each of us carries a responsibility towards it. Whether in uniform or not, every Indian can serve by being a good citizen. CONNECTICUT: GOPIO-CT is one of the most active chapters of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO International) with 100 chapters worldwide in 35 countries. India got its independence from the British in 1947. To mark the 78th Anniversary of India’s independence, the GOPIO’s Connecticut chapter (GOPIO-CT) has joined hands with Stamford City and Mill River Park Collaborative to host India Festival in Stamford to commemorate Indian Independence, when the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru raised the Indian flag at the Red Fort in New Delhi on August 15, 1947.

“The Indian American community has done very well in Corporate America and in the political arena, too. In Connecticut, it is a growing community consisting generally of IT and management professionals, healthcare workers, and a large number of entrepreneurs in hospitality, Hedge Fund, and small businesses,” said Dr. Thomas Abraham, Chairman of GOPIO International and Trustee/Advisor to GOPIO-CT.

Everyone is invited to this celebration, which will start with hoisting American, Indian, and Connecticut flags at the Stamford Government Center on Sunday, August 10th at 11.30 a.m. Following the flag hoisting, at Noon, there is an official ceremony to celebrate Indian Independence Day at the adjacent Mill River Park Carousel Hall (corner Broad St. and Mill River St., Stamford). India’s Consul General in New York, Hon. Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, will be the Chief Guest. Darien resident Mr. Joseph Simon will be honored with the 2025 Indian Independence Liberty Award. Simon (Darien, CT) is a technology professional focused on the media sector and has held senior roles at both US and European companies. He has contributed to a variety of charitable organizations, including as a board member, disbursement panelist, and trustee for GOPIO-CT, Asha for Education – NYC, and the Community Fund of Darien. Joseph has been a founder of the Stamford Cricket Club Mad Dogs and is still involved in running it. He’s also the Chairman of a social impact company – FIA Global, based out of Gurgaon, India.

Pradhan said that the Independence Day commemoration also celebrates the rise of India and the growth story of the last 78 years. “It’s also a story of Indian people coming here, working hard, contributing to the nation-building of the United States in a tremendous way, and this is something we remember in India, we celebrate in India,” Pradhan said.

Deputy Commissioner for the New York City Mayor’s Office for International Affairs Dilip Chauhan told members of the diaspora at the event that for the first time in New York City’s history, schools will be closed on Diwali, a historic decision made possible after years of efforts and advocacy from the community. “Diwali is going to teach love, unity, and harmony among the students, who will be the future leaders,” Chauhan said. He added that the decision to close schools on November 1st, Friday for Diwali this year “reflects a deep respect for the rich culture that makes our community strong. Our diversity with language, religion, and traditions stands as a beacon of unity.” Deputy Commissioner Chauhan, who is heading Trade, Investment, and Innovation for New York City, mentioned that NYC is back in business. “Our hospitality industry is back. If you want to open your business or you wantd to expand your business, we are here to help you whether for local business or international business.” Chauhan added that this vibrant culture contributes to the “unique character” of New York City. He also called on members of the community to reach out to the mayor’s office if they have any issues. “We are always here to support our community and we are here to hear you,” he said.

MUMBAI:  Bank of Baroda (Bank), one of India’s leading public sector banks, observed India’s 78^th Independence Day with a series of initiatives. The Bank’s Managing Director & CEO, Shri Debadatta Chand, Executive Directors, CVO, and senior executives participated in the flag hoisting program at its Corporate Office in Mumbai.

The Bank and its employees also enthusiastically supported the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign. This initiative invites citizens to proudly hoist the Tiranga at their homes and offices and post the pictures on the Har Ghar Tiranga portal, fostering a deep sense of patriotism.

Further, the Bank of Baroda observed “Partition Horrors Remembrance Day” by hosting exhibitions at the corporate office and at 75 lead districts across India. “Partition Horrors Remembrance Day” is aimed at shedding light on the suffering and pain endured by millions during the partition. The exhibition narrates the story of India’s Partition and is meant to commemorate the victims & the sacrifices made by them and ignite the spirit of unity and oneness amongst all Indians. 

The Bank invited prominent local dignitaries to inaugurate the exhibitions. In Mumbai, Brigadier S.D. Salokhe, a 1971 War Veteran, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour.
