UNITED STATES: President Biden delivered remarks on November 1, 2023, in Northfield, MN, where he spoke about his Bidenomics agenda and how it is ensuring that rural Americans do not have to leave their hometowns to find opportunities. He emphasized the need to invest in rural America to create new income streams and markets.

The President also addressed the latest developments in the Gaza Strip and thanked the partners in the region, particularly Qatar, for their support in facilitating the departure of American citizens. He expressed his administration’s commitment to working nonstop to get Americans out of Gaza as soon and as safely as possible.

President Biden highlighted the economic practice of trickle-down economics, which he said hit rural America especially hard, hollowing out Main Street and telling farmers the only path to success was to get big or get out. He noted that tax cuts for big corporations encouraged companies to move jobs and production overseas for cheaper labor, undercutting local small businesses.

The President also pointed out that corporations that sell seed, fertilizer, and even farm equipment used their outsized market power to charge farmers and ranchers unfair prices. He said that over the past four decades, America has lost over 400,000 farms, and over 14+ million acres of farmland and that family farms have struggled to make the math work, with the promise of keeping the farm in the family slipping out of reach for so many across America.

President Biden said that his administration is growing an economy from the middle out and bottom up, instead of the top down. He emphasized that when the middle class does well, the poor have a way up, and the wealthy still do very well. He said that when rural America does well when Indian Country does well, we all do well.

The President also spoke about the historic legislation passed by his administration, which has created new and better markets and new income streams so that generations of rural Americans can begin to thrive again. He cited the clean energy initiatives contained in the Inflation Reduction Act, which is investing nearly $20 billion to help farmers and ranchers tackle the climate crisis through climate-smart agriculture and cover crops, nutrient management, prescribed grazing, and storing carbon in the soil, reducing greenhouse gas emissions while improving the overall health of the soil and the water.

President Biden said that under his plan, farmers can diversify and earn additional income just by selling into the local markets. He noted that when a farmer sells locally, the farmers can get anything from 50 to 75 cents for their same product, in addition to what they have to do now, depending on one income stream and being at the mercy of the commodity markets and the big corporations.

President Biden said that his Bidenomics agenda is just another way of saying “the American Dream.” He said that his plan is rooted in investing in America and investing in Americans, no matter where they live in rural communities, Tribal communities, suburbs, or cities. He emphasized that a president is supposed to represent all American people, not just some Americans. He urged the country to unite and make sure that those who want to stay on the farm can stay as long as they want because they make a good, decent living.

Automotive Industries Plan Averts Insolvency and Reduction of Benefits Through Receipt of Special Financial Assistance

WASHINGTON, D.C.: The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) announced today that it has approved the application submitted to the Special Financial Assistance (SFA) Program by the Automotive Industries Pension Plan (Automotive Industries Plan). The plan, based in Dublin, California, covers 23,687 participants in the transportation industry.

The Automotive Industries Plan will receive approximately $1.1 billion in special financial assistance, including interest to the expected date of payment to the plan. The plan was projected to become insolvent and run out of money in 2033. Without the SFA Program, the Automotive Industries Plan would have been required to reduce participants’ benefits to the PBGC guarantee levels upon plan insolvency, which is roughly 50 percent below the benefits payable under the terms of the plan. SFA will enable the plan to continue to pay retirement benefits without reduction for many years into the future.

“Millions of people work for years, looking forward to the day when the promise of a secure, dignified retirement is kept,” said Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su. “Today, the Biden-Harris administration is delivering on that promise for 23,687 workers by providing Special Financial Assistance in the Automotive Industries Pension Plan that ensures they can retire with the dignity they deserve.”

UNITED STATES: “At ITServe, our commitment to the community goes beyond the ITServe family,” said Samba Movva, Director of ITServe Alliance’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). “We are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of the underprivileged, ensuring that no one is left behind. Through our initiatives focused on education, healthcare, and basic needs, we strive to uplift those facing adversity and create a more equitable society.”

Founded in 2010, ITServe Alliance is the largest association of Information Technology Services Organizations functioning across the United States. Established with the objective of being the collective voice of all Information Technology companies with similar interests in the United States, ITServe Alliance has evolved as a resourceful and respected platform to collaborate and initiate measures in the direction of protecting common interests and ensuring collective success.

Vinay Mahajan, President of ITServe Alliance said, “Our ability to empower our local communities is strengthened by the generous donations by our leadership and member organizations. They play a crucial role in the success of our programs. Our partners play a vital role in helping us broaden our reach and positively impact the lives of the lesser fortunate in our communities by helping us broaden our reach. I am proud that this respected platform is today more accessible and worthy of your time spent for the common benefit and serving the communities in need across the Chapters through our CSR programs and initiatives”.

According to Vinod Babu Uppu, Governing Board Chair, “ITServe CSR Team members are unwavering in their commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) to give back to local communities across the country. The ITServe CSR vision is empowering local communities through Education and Training, Creating local employment, and supporting our first responders.”

Over the years, ITServe Alliance has established a name for itself as the center point of information for its members and the larger community, covering a variety of areas ranging from immigration, technology, economy, and many more that are relevant to its members. ITServe has 20 Chapters in several states across the United States, bringing resources and service to the larger humanity in every part of this innovative country.

Jagadeesh Mosali, President-Elect of ITServe said, “We are committed to empowering local communities through STEM advocacy, educating the underprivileged, feeding the hungry, supporting our veterans and first responders, and recognizing our community heroes. ITServe CSR would like to give back to our local communities through various charitable programs.”

From the very beginning, ITServe’s mission has been to empower local communities through a wide range of initiatives. ITServe believes in the transformative power of STEM scholarships, STEM training, and STEM internships, which enable individuals to reach their full potential and contribute to a thriving society. “By advocating for these educational opportunities, we aim to bridge the gap and provide equal access to quality education,” Mosali pointed out.

Since ITServe’s inception in 2010, the CSR team has embarked on a remarkable journey in the realm of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Starting with small steps, it has made a significant impact by investing 1.5 million dollars in STEM activities and various welfare programs. In addition to the financial contributions, ITServe members have dedicated over 18,000 hours of collective efforts to serving local communities.

Elaborating on the larger mission of CSR, Movva said, CSR has a broad range of initiatives aimed at creating a positive impact in various areas. STEM Scholarships, STEM Education, STEM Training, and Internship Programs are some of the initiatives ITServe and its team led by Movva do on a regular basis. One of its key focuses has been on promoting STEM education among underprivileged students.

“Our CSR team works to establish partnerships with educational institutions, organizations, and industry experts to provide training opportunities that enhance STEM skills and knowledge. This equips individuals with the tools they need to excel in STEM careers and contributes to building a robust talent pipeline,” he added.

Through the non-STEM CSR programs, a broader approach for ITServe is aimed at addressing social challenges beyond the STEM realm. “We actively engage in initiatives that support education, healthcare, and community development, among other areas.”

ITServe encourages and facilitates member engagement in volunteer activities, enabling them to contribute their skills, expertise, time, and resources, ensuring that they collectively make a significant and lasting impact. “By leveraging our collective efforts, we make a meaningful impact on local communities and societal well-being with the objective of making a positive and lasting difference in the areas that matter most to us,” Movva said.

ITServe recognizes the sacrifices of our veterans and first responders, who selflessly serve our nation. ITServe’s CSR has initiated a meaningful collaboration with Welcome Home Troops, a trusted organization supporting our veterans, helping address the critical issue of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and extending comprehensive support to our brave heroes. “This partnership ensures that our veterans receive the care and assistance they deserve, promoting their overall well-being and successful reintegration into civilian life.”

The ITServe leadership takes pride in acknowledging the heroes within the larger community. Whether it’s individuals who have gone above and beyond to make a positive impact or organizations that are driving meaningful change, ITServe believes in celebrating and amplifying their efforts.

ITServe has set an ambitious goal for this year, to reach a remarkable milestone of 6,000 volunteer hours, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to serving humanity.

In addition, the organization of multi-talented individuals has set targets of awarding 100 STEM scholarships, providing life-changing opportunities to deserving individuals, and offering 20 STEM internships to foster practical learning experiences. “Through our dedicated STEM training programs, we aspire to empower and educate a diverse group of individuals, reaching 100 participants this year,” Movva added.

In order to achieve these lofty goals, ITServe has assembled an exceptional team of committed and talented national leaders to make its mission accomplished. The STEM Team is chaired by distinguished Chairs for each area. They are Tanuj Gundlapalli, STEM Scholarship Chair 2023; Jyothi Vazirani, STEM Internship Chair 2023; Venkata Manthena, STEM Training Chair 2023; Chandu Gorrapati, Non-STEM Activity Chair 2023; and Ravi Satya Gavirineni, Volunteer Hours 2023 Co-chair.

In addition to the national chairs, ITSERVE boasts of 20 regional Chapters, each led by a dedicated chapter president, who serves as a pillar, championing the ITSERVE vision alongside the CSR objectives. The national/Chapter level CSR chairs play a vital role in identifying and partnering with qualified non-profit organizations that align with our CSR objectives.

ITServe has cultivated strong partnerships with over 50 prestigious universities and community colleges, forming a robust network to help achieve STEM goals. At the local level, each Chapter is actively engaged with community non-profit organizations, forming vital partnerships to drive ITSeve’s mission and objectives forward.

Movva acknowledges the many challenges he and his Team faces. Identifying the Right Organizations, Assessing Community Needs, Limited Resources, Maximizing Impact, Engaging ITServe Members, Adapting to Changing Needs, and Creating Long-Term Sustainability are only some of the many challenges CSR faces. Despite these challenges, ITServe remains committed to overcoming obstacles and making a meaningful impact in the communities it serves.

“Together, we form an extraordinary team, united in our mission to achieve our CSR goals for 2023 and beyond. I feel incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by such exceptional individuals, all working diligently to create a positive impact and shape a better future for those we serve,” Movva said. “Together, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of those in need. Our approach not only amplifies our impact but also fosters a strong sense of community within ITSERVE. We are proud to be part of a larger movement that extends beyond individual chapters, uniting us under a shared vision of corporate social responsibility.”

Ongoing participation and commitment are essential to reach these lofty goals. The ITServe CSR Team “Implores and passionately calls upon our esteemed ITServe members and individuals alike to wholeheartedly engage and actively participate in the diverse range of ITServe’s CSR activities.” ITServe’s CSR Team is confident that with a passionate and dedicated team, ITServe is committed to reaching more organizations and expanding its support network, with the goal to create a lasting and positive impact on the lives of individuals and communities in need. We are driven by the belief that together; we can build a brighter future for everyone. “Join us in our journey as we strive to make a meaningful difference. Together, we can create a brighter future and foster a spirit of compassion, empathy, and empowerment in every corner of society. Together, we can transform lives, inspire change, and leave a legacy of compassion and service. Let’s stand united and make our communities stronger, one step at a time.”

Here are the brief bios of this year’s award winners:

Entrepreneur of the Year: Aman Narang
Aman Narang is the President, Co-Founder, Chief Operating Officer, and Director of Toast, Inc. Prior to Toast, he worked on innovation initiatives at Endeca (now Oracle). Narang spearheaded the development of Endeca’s business intelligence platform as well as their mobile commerce platform, each of which became a major business unit. He holds BS and MS degrees in Computer Science from MIT and currently leads innovation and business development initiatives at Toast.

Award for Corporate Excellence: Rohit Prasad
Rohit Prasad is senior vice president and head scientist for Amazon Alexa, leading a multidisciplinary team to make Alexa a trusted AI assistant, advisor, and companion for everyone, everywhere. His team’s product, engineering, and scientific advances have driven the adoption of Alexa by millions of customers worldwide.

In his previous roles at Amazon, Prasad directed areas such as far-field speech recognition, natural language understanding, and the underlying machine learning technologies that were instrumental in launching Amazon Echo’s new paradigm of hands-free interaction with ambient devices. Prasad and his team are now focused on advancing generalizable AI, combining the best of human-like intelligence with machine learning to accelerate the future of ambient intelligence – where the underlying AI seamlessly blends into your environment, connects heterogeneous services and devices, and adapts to your behalf to provide greater utility.

Prior to Amazon, Prasad was deputy manager and senior director of the Speech, Language, and Multimedia Business Unit at Raytheon BBN Technologies. In that role, he directed U.S. Government-sponsored research and development initiatives in speech-to-speech translation, psychological health analytics, document image translation, and STEM learning. Prasad is a named author of more than 100 scientific articles and holds several patents. He received his master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, and a bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology, India.

Venture Capitalist of the Year: Jamie Goldstein
Jamie Goldstein is a Partner at Pillar VC, a firm he co-founded with leaders of many of Boston’s most important companies, including DraftKings, Wayfair, Ginkgo Bioworks, and Circle. While at Pillar, he also co-founded Petri, a program supporting pre-seed biotech companies, and the melon, a crypto incubation studio. Goldstein previously spent 18 years at North Bridge Venture Partners. Prior to North Bridge, he was a Co-Founder of PureSpeech, a speech recognition company. Goldstein is a graduate of MIT and Harvard Business School.

During his career, Goldstein has backed dozens of Boston-based startups, including many spinouts from MIT and Harvard. Goldstein invests in seed-stage companies at inception and was the first investor in Algorand, an MIT blockchain spinout that has grown to a $3B market cap. His seed investments at Pillar include Jellyfish, an engineering management tool, PathAI, a diagnostic tool powered by machine learning, Asimov, a genetic circuits company, and Desktop Metal. He also led later-stage investments in Circle and PillPack.

Rising Entrepreneur of the Year: Uroš Kuzmanović
Uroš Kuzmanović, the CEO and Co-Founder of BioSens8 and a Boston University BME Ph.D. candidate, engineers novel biosensors to provide continuous insight into our body’s state. He is the winner of the TiE Boston University Pitch competition in the summer of 2022 and later went on to be the TiE Global Champion. His interest in understanding the world around him led him to study molecular and cellular biology and chemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In contrast to learning only from textbooks, he was excited by the idea of partaking in work that was completely novel, so he joined a chemical biology research lab early on. There, he worked to discover and characterize an organic molecule that alleviates symptoms of myotonic dystrophy.

However, it was his participation in iGEM, a yearlong undergraduate synthetic biology competition, which made him realize the power of engineering microbes and how to take an entrepreneurial perspective on science. It was a ‘lightbulb moment’ in a sense where he understood the immense impact which synthetic biology could make in a multitude of fields such as medicine, agriculture, climate change, and more. He pursued that passion and continued with applied research, joining Boston University to work with Prof. James Galagan for his MS and Ph.D.

Kuzmanović has been growing BioSens8 since the summer of 2020 and more formally for the past two years as the CEO. During that time, Kuzmanović has raised over $500,000 entirely in non-dilutive funding, in part thanks to the TiE Boston organization, interviewed over 70 customers, worked directly with lawyers on 4 patents (including 2 which have been granted), gathered support from Fortune 500 companies, amassed a large network of advisors and mentors, and moved the company into a premiere incubator space in Cambridge, MA.

TiE Boston President’s Award: Dr. Dinesh Patel, MD
Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Dinesh Patel, MD is Emeritus Chief of Arthroscopic Surgery at Mass General Hospital and a co-founder of TiE Boston. He is also a founding member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Association of Arthroscopy. He has received many awards internationally for his pioneering work in Arthroscopic surgery and has been invited by numerous governments to assist in establishing orthopedic best practices and training in arthroscopy, including Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, India, France, Italy, Japan, Germany, Indonesia, and Egypt.

As an entrepreneur, Dr. Patel had the opportunity to revolutionize the medical device industry with the launch of Acufex Microsurgical which has generated a billion dollars in revenue since its inception in the 1980s. In the 80s, he was selected to be the first minority Chairman of the Board of Registration in Medicine in Massachusetts and an elected member of the Federation of State Medical Boards. He was also the founding president of IMANE and a former President of IAFPE. Within Tie-Atlantic he founded the TiE Life Sciences section. He has received numerous awards from the Government of Gujarat, the State of Massachusetts, Rotary International, and the global medical community.

MISSISSIPPI: The Recent US National elections of this week brought surprising and unexpected results. It was assumed that Republicans will have a heyday and easily win both the houses, US Congress and Senate and President Trump will ride the wave and announce his candidacy for Presidency in 2024.

The US Congress will do have a slim majority for Republicans and capture the house but unsure of Senate as at least two seats one in Georgia and Nevada are still hanging and possibly Republicans still may control US Senate by January 2023.

President Biden is happy that there was not a Sunami of a win for republicans in spite of the 67% disapproval rate of President Biden due to high inflation, the Afghan fiasco, and not the least unpopular Ukraine involvement in fighting a proxy war.

President Biden’s saving grace was Roe vs Wade Supreme Court decision that made even staunch Republicans, especially the women who did not appreciate the Supreme Court ruling on this issue, decided to vote with democrats.

President Trump has already declared that he is going to announce his candidacy for the presidency in 2024 and if he can work out a deal with victorious and Popular governor Ron Desantis of Florida, who has his own Presidential ambitions, it will be an unbeatable team. It may be advantageous for India, as Trump and De Santis are friendlier and have promised to promote India on the world stage.
Time will tell.
