PUNE: Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune, observed World Plastic Surgery Day on 15^th July through an initiative led by the institution’s Plastic Surgery Department. This year’s theme was centered around, “Prevention of Burn Injuries and First Aid.” The event highlighted the critical role of awareness and education in reducing the incidence and impact of burn injuries.

The objective of the event was to empower students with knowledge and skills to prevent burn injuries and provide immediate first aid, thereby minimizing the impact of such incidents. The event that brought together students, faculty, acid attack survivors, and medical professionals featured a series of enlightening activities aimed at spreading awareness about the advancements, benefits, and importance of plastic surgery in today’s media landscape.

Key highlights of the event:

• An interactive session by Dr. Nikhil Danse, Assistant Professor, Department of Plastic Surgery, Government BJMC and SGH, Pune emphasizing the transformative impact of plastic surgery on patients’ lives and its evolving role in modern medicine
• A heartfelt speech by Rekha Somnath Devka, an acid attack survivor who narrated her courageous journey, experiences, and subsequent treatment and surgeries she underwent to overcome this life-changing incident
• Quiz session to evaluate students’ understanding of plastic surgeries, burns, and acid attacks
• A captivating drama by students exploring stories of transformation and self-discovery that explore the intricate world of plastic surgery

Dr. Bhagyashree Patil, Pro-Chancellor, Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University), Pimpri, Pune, stated, “We are proud to host events that bring together experts and the community to address critical health issues. The concept of National Plastic Surgery Day was first introduced by Dr S Raja Sabapathy, the President of the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India, in the year 2011.

According to recent statistics from the Journal of Arthroscopic Surgery and Sports Medicine, arthroscopic knee and shoulder treatments are becoming more common. Age is one of the most important factors in determining the nature of knee and shoulder issues. This includes sports injuries like ACL tears and dislocated shoulders, as well as age-related conditions such as shoulder discomfort and rotator cuff tears. While joint replacement surgeries are still common, the scarcity of skilled arthroscopic surgeons for knee and shoulder procedures is noteworthy.
