PUNE: In a captivating confluence of culinary art and media expertise, Lexicon Institute of Hotel Management (Lexicon IHM) and Lexicon Institute of Media & Animation (Lexicon IMA) proudly hosted an exclusive Food Styling & Food Photography workshop led by the distinguished Chef Michael Swamy.

Chef Swamy, a pioneer in food media, brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the workshop. Based in Mumbai, Chef Swamy is not only a renowned chef but also a food stylist, writer, and travel photographer. A graduate of the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu, London, he has authored several acclaimed cookbooks, including The East Indian Kitchen, Easy Guide to Pairing Indian Food and Wine, and Masala Dabba. His exemplary work has earned him multiple Gourmand Awards, underscoring his contributions to the culinary arts and media.

True to its motto, “By the Hoteliers, For the Hoteliers,” Lexicon IHM aimed to bridge the gap between culinary practice and visual storytelling through this workshop. “I Believe” is the first volume of its kind to be released by a school. The Summer Camp offered diverse activities tailored to stimulate sensory processing, enhance motor skills, and foster creativity in a fun and exploratory manner. Children could traverse through sensory paths filled with various textures, promoting balance and coordination while engaging their senses. They also crawled through tunnels, improving spatial awareness and motor skills.

Dynamic activities like jumping on the trampoline which increases muscle strength, coordination, and endurance building were part of the camp. Fine motor activities, including lacing, beading, and using toothpicks, helped children develop hand-eye coordination and concentration, essential for writing and self-care tasks.

“We are thrilled with the success of this year’s Summer Camp” We organized these activities to encourage learning with mindful playing activities that keep children occupied and engaged. We aimed to create a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment where children could learn, explore, and grow. The 1:1 student-teacher ratio allowed us to provide personalized attention, ensuring that each child could fully benefit from our diverse activities. The camp featured an ocean-themed adventure that promoted sensory exploration and social interaction, fostering a love for marine life through imaginative play. Magnetic fishing games and exploring magnetic properties with different objects enhanced cognitive abilities and fine motor skills. Creative activities such as making colorful jellyfish with paper plates and designing crowns and bracelets using natural elements encouraged artistic expression and sensory exploration. Dinosaur-themed activities like shadow drawing and dino skeleton crafts stimulated imagination and tactile sensory experiences

Messy play activities allowed children to explore textures and engage in tactile learning, while Lego-themed construction activities developed fine motor skills, spatial awareness, and problem-solving abilities. Carnival-themed games provided a festive and engaging atmosphere, promoting coordination and social interaction.

 Dr. Isha Soni, Senior Occupational Therapist and Centre Head at Lexicon Rainbow addressed a large audience of 1000 plus parents about different services offered for children who show any developmental delay. She firmly believes that “Childhood is not a race to see how quickly a child can read, write and count. Childhood is a small window of time to learn and develop at the pace which is right for each child.“

This year’s theme was ‘ Festivals – A Musical Extravaganza of Cultures Indian and International. ‘The students of Lexicon Rainbow Child Development Centre put up a fabulous show by dancing and celebrating festivals like Diwali, Halloween, Caloundra Music, Golden Mask and La Tomatina festival.

A lot of hard work and dedication was put in by the entire team of therapists and special educators from ideation to execution.

Children with neurodiverse needs have difficulty coping with different situations, costumes, stage lights, loud sounds, and wearing props around them due to sensory sensitivities. During the preparation, the team had to constantly tweak according to the child’s tolerance level and adaptability.

It was phenomenal for these children to stand in one place, imitate the actions (dance steps) of their teacher, and follow the rhythm. It was a very emotional moment for the parents as rarely these children are given a chance to perform on the stage in comparison to their peers due to delays and challenges faced by them.

Mrs Monisha Sharma, Co-Founder and director, of The Lexicon Group asserted, ” It is extremely crucial for us as a society to be aware and sensitive towards neurodiversity and contribute our bit to help them lead a fulfilled life.“
