Aster Whitefield Hospital Launches Karnataka’s First Dedicated Liver ICU: Pivotal shift in Liver-specific critical care in the Region

BENGALURU: Taking a major initiative towards expert liver care, Aster Whitefield Hospital has declared the launch of the first dedicated Liver Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Karnataka. This is a state-of-the-art facility designed only for liver failure patients, those having biliary problems, and liver transplant cases. The ICU, named SHIELD (Specialized Hepatic Intensive & Emergency Liver Division), is a state-of-the-art facility designed solely for patients with liver failure, biliary problems, and liver transplant cases. Setting the Liver-specific ICU as a real rescue for patients in critical condition, it is a confluence of renowned doctors, modern facilities, and continuous patient monitoring to provide highly specialised, multi-disciplinary care aimed at improving patient outcomes. Through this, Aster has once again shown its desire to promote islands of excellence aimed at quaternary single-organ care pathways for better results for patients with complicated liver diseases. The programme was honoured by the presence of Dr. C. N. Manjunath, Hon’ble Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), as the Chief Guest.

Speaking ahead of the inauguration, Dr. C. N. Manjunath said, “Liver problems are turning out to be a sneaky but major health issue in India, and usually, it’s at a very severe stage when the patients are found. A liver ICU dedicated to liver care opening at Aster Whitefield Hospital is a very appropriate and great step that will enable our healthcare system to be more efficient and quicker in handling very difficult liver cases. Apart from better survival chances, specialized facilities equip the patient care to be comprehensive and in collaboration with various medical disciplines.”

Adding to this, Dr. H R S Girn, Senior Consultant – HPB and Liver Transplant surgeon, Aster Whitefield Hospital, said: “The establishment of a specialty Liver ICU represents an innovative approach in the establishment of a single point care facility for liver sick patients requiring what we call the Liver Arc services (Hepatology, ICU, Surgery, Transplantation, Luminal and radiological interventions) under one roof. A person with decompensated cirrhosis or liver failure experiences rapid changes within a short period of time. Thus, in this case, having a speciality dedicated ICU implies that all actions can be taken efficiently and effectively for the patients and their families. In turn, this provides a seamless referral and healthcare delivery pathway aimed at holistic liver care, liver-specific training for budding future specialists, and brings liver care at par with other resource-intensive single-organ dedicated ICUs like the Cardiac or Neuro ICUs, which have traditionally been the norm. With busy lives, nuclear families, and increasing liver disease burden in the country, single organ-specific facilities under trusted brands like Aster are the need of the hour as a single point of contact resource for the patients suffering from life-threatening conditions.”

Srikant Subudhi, Chief Operating Officer, Aster Whitefield Hospital, added: “At Aster Whitefield Hospital, the core of our efforts is the creation of highly sophisticated, patient-oriented healthcare ecosystems that can effectively meet the various clinical needs of today and tomorrow. The launching of Karnataka’s first dedicated Liver ICU is a powerful indication of how we are always ready to put our money into the specialised infrastructure which is capable of dealing with the increasing complexity of liver-related diseases. Not only does this facility leverage state-of-the-art technology and a wide range of medical experts, but it also ensures continuous monitoring for better clinical results and provides easier access to specialised and high-quality treatment.“

The Liver ICU will be a collaborative endeavor by a team of highly skilled and proficient physicians, including liver transplantation surgeons, hepatologists, and gastroenterologists, as well as critical care specialists. This dedicated unit will try to fill a major void in the liver care infrastructure of Karnataka, and it will be a one-stop solution for patients to get timely, cutting-edge, and life-saving treatment.

By Dr. Vinay Kumar B R, Consultant, Hepatology and Liver Transplantation, Narayana Health City Bengaluru

In an age ruled by convenience foods and screen-based lifestyles, a silent epidemic is brewing and is often symptomless until it becomes life-threatening. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its more severe form, called Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), are increasingly becoming causes for concern, particularly in the younger population. These conditions are driven predominantly by modern diets rich in processed snacks, refined sugars, and unhealthy fats.

A Crisis Fuelled by Convenience

Today’s dietary patterns are dominated by ultra-processed foods—ready meals, sugary beverages, deep-fried snacks, and energy bars—all disguised as health foods. Coupled with sedentary routines, erratic sleep, and chronic stress, this lifestyle is fuelling liver dysfunction at an alarming rate.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease occurs when excess fat accumulates in liver cells in people who consume little or no alcohol. If left untreated, it can progress to NASH, characterised by inflammation, liver cell damage, and eventually scarring (fibrosis), cirrhosis, liver failure, or hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer). However, NAFLD is often asymptomatic in its early stages, making routine screening vital for those at risk.

The Young Are Not Immune

Once considered a disease of older adults, NAFLD is now increasingly diagnosed in teenagers, young professionals, and even athletes. The irony lies in the so-called ‘healthy’ snacks: protein bars, flavoured yoghurts and energy drinks, which are often marketed as nutritious, are typically packed with added sugars, trans fats and artificial additives.

Recent data published in news reports like The Hindu, TOI, and more indicate a dramatic rise in liver conditions among people under 30, with lifestyle choices being the chief culprits.

Food Triggers That Sabotage Liver Health

Several daily habits contribute to the growing prevalence of liver diseases.

Erratic Eating Patterns: Skipping meals and late-night snacking disrupt the body’s natural metabolic rhythm.

Stress Eating: Turning to high-sugar and high-salt snacks during emotional distress can overload the liver with fats.

Poor Nutritional Quality: Diets low in fibre and essential micronutrients deprive the liver of the materials it needs for detoxification and repair.

Caffeine and Sugar Overload: Excessive consumption of energy drinks, coffees, and sugar-loaded snacks, seen especially in students and office workers, burdens the liver’s metabolic capacity.

Physical Inactivity: Sedentary behaviours, common in remote work and digital lifestyles, contribute to insulin resistance and fat accumulation in the liver.

The Gut-Liver Axis: A Vital Connection

Emerging studies point to the gut-liver axis—a biological highway linking intestinal health and liver function. A disrupted gut microbiome, often a result of poor dietary choices, can increase gut permeability. This allows toxins and harmful substances to leak into the bloodstream, reaching the liver and triggering inflammation. Supporting gut health through probiotic-rich foods, fermented products, and fibre can mitigate this risk and aid liver recovery.

Five Simple Habits to Protect and Heal Your Liver

Prioritise Whole Foods: Embrace a diet rich in colourful vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and lean proteins.

Move Your Body: Aim for 30 minutes of moderate physical activity daily—walking, swimming, cycling, or yoga.

Sleep Smarter: Maintain regular sleep patterns and aim for seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep to allow the liver time to regenerate.

Ditch Packaged Products: Reduce reliance on instant noodles, sugary drinks, frozen snacks, and other highly processed items.

Routine Health Checks: Those over 30, overweight, or diabetic should consider annual liver function tests to catch early signs of NAFLD or NASH.

The Sugar Culprit: Why Fructose Is Dangerous

Fructose, especially in the form of high-fructose corn syrup found in fizzy drinks and many processed foods, is metabolised primarily by the liver. Unlike glucose, which is processed by various tissues, fructose can overwhelm the liver’s capacity, increasing fat synthesis and storage. Reducing fructose intake is a crucial step in both the prevention and treatment of fatty liver disease.

Liver Health: An Urgent Call to Action

Greater public awareness and education about NAFLD are essential. Nutritional literacy in workplaces, government organisations, and educational institutions must be prioritised, healthy eating promoted, and regular health screenings advocated. People must move towards lifestyle reform, change how they view their relationship with food, in order to keep their liver healthy and make wellness a habit.

NEW DELHI: On the morning of 1st May 2025, a 37-year-old man was rushed to Manipal Hospital following a brain hemorrhage and rapid loss of consciousness. He was managed in the ICU and placed on ventilatory support. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, he was declared brain dead on 12th May 2025. He is survived by his wife and a 9-year-old child.

Despite the unimaginable grief, his wife made the courageous and selfless decision to donate all his organs, duly supported by her family and counseling team. The liver and both kidneys were retrieved and allocated by NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization), while the heart and lungs were deemed unfit for transplant. The liver was transplanted into a 61-year-old male, and one kidney into a 52-year-old male, both at HCMCT Manipal Hospital, Dwarka. The second kidney was transplanted into a 59-year-old female at another private hospital in Delhi.

Dr. Shrikanth Srinivasan, Chairman, Manipal Institute of Critical Care Medicine, “Despite the best efforts of the treating team, the patient’s condition did not improve and was declared brain dead on 12th May 2025. Despite the profound loss, the family made the courageous decision to donate his organs, offering a gift of life to those in need. Their strength and compassion in such a difficult time is truly inspiring and serve as a powerful reminder of the impact one life can have on many.”

Dr. (Col) Avnish Seth VSM, Head, Manipal Organ Sharing & Transplant (MOST), said, “Organ donation should be an essential component of end-of-life care. Only if the family is fully convinced that their loved one succumbed despite the best possible treatment, will they consider doing something for others. Trust is an important component. Transparency in the allocation of organs as per the waiting list, like it is being done in our country by NOTTO, gives a lot of confidence to the family to arrive at the correct decision. This altruistic gesture by the family has saved three lives, and this is the true spirit of humanity. He will live on.”

There remains a wide gap between patients who need transplants and the organs that are available in India. Around 1.8 lakh people suffer from kidney failure every year, however, only 13,426 kidney transplants were performed in 2023. An estimated 25,000 to 30,000 liver transplants are needed annually in India, but only 4491 were performed in 2023. Similarly, out of several thousand people suffering from heart failure, only 221 received a heart transplant. In the case of corneas, about 25,000 transplants are performed annually against a requirement of 1 lakh.

This noble act of organ donation highlights the pressing need for organ donations in India, as there is a significant disparity between patients awaiting transplants and the availability of organs. Increasing awareness and participation in organ donation can bridge this gap and offer hope to countless lives in need.

INDIA: MediBuddy, India’s largest digital healthcare company, today announced the launch of its latest campaign, #ReclaimYourHealth, to mark World Health Day. This innovative initiative uses humor and relatable content to highlight the stark contrast between the healthy habits of the past and today’s sedentary, technology-driven lifestyle.

Modern lifestyles often leave our bodies struggling—sedentary habits, poor diets, and limited fresh air have replaced the active and wholesome ways of the past. Through witty dialogue and visually striking contrasts, the campaign delivers a powerful yet simple message: reclaiming your health doesn’t require drastic measures, just a return to the basics.

#ReclaimYourHealth presents an entertaining yet educational video series featuring personified organs sharing their experiences in contemporary language. With scenarios such as a heart doing a TikTok dance versus slumped in a chair and lungs taking deep breaths in nature versus constricted by phone screen glow, the campaign highlights vital but often overlooked aspects of everyday health.

Health isn’t just a personal issue; it’s a family issue that impacts communities and ultimately affects society at large. While modern conveniences have improved many aspects of life, the campaign encourages viewers to reconsider the health trade-offs we have unconsciously accepted.

Speaking about the campaign, Saibal Biswas, SVP and Head of Marketing, PR and Partnerships, MediBuddy, said, “Reclaiming your health doesn’t require complex interventions—just simple choices like moving more, eating better, and breathing fresh air. Knowledge is power, and every mindful, conscious decision brings us closer to a healthier life. This World Health Day, let’s go beyond awareness. Let’s shift our focus from temporary fixes to lasting, meaningful change. Let’s reclaim our health.”

The campaign emphasizes that reclaiming health doesn’t require complex interventions—just returning to basics like moving more, eating better, and breathing fresh air.

This campaign was conceptualized and produced by MediBuddy’s in-house creative team. The campaign video, titled #ReclaimYourHealth, is 1 minute 14 seconds in duration. The video will be amplified across all social media platforms.

Liver Recipients from Washim and Parbhani Receive New Lease on Life at Sahyadri Hospital

PUNE: In a significant medical achievement, Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital, Hadapsar, successfully performed a liver transplant on Sanjay Chavan (name changed) who is from Washim, who had been suffering from decompensated liver cirrhosis for the past three years. This life-saving surgery underscores the importance of timely medical intervention and the profound impact of organ donation.

Chavan had been battling severe liver issues, including a rise in bilirubin levels and ascites. His condition required an immediate liver transplant. Fortunately, a 47-year-old man who had suffered a brain hemorrhage generously donated his liver. The donor was brought to Sahyadri Hospital in an emergency, where the organ donation process was facilitated.

ZTCC’s organ allocation process played a crucial role in this life-saving procedure. According to ZTCC guidelines, priority is given to recipients registered at the same hospital as the donor. Mr. Sanjay, being the registered recipient at Sahyadri Hospital, was prioritized for the transplant.

“Sanjay’s case is a testament to the importance of timely intervention, effective counseling, and the coordinated efforts of our medical team. Just last month, our team achieved another milestone by completing the first liver transplant at our Hadapsar facility. We are grateful to the donor’s families for their noble decisions, which have given these patients new leases on life. This series of successful procedures demonstrates our team’s dedication and the advanced medical capabilities at Sahyadri Hospital. We aim to continue providing such life-saving interventions and improving patient outcomes,” said Dr. Bipin Vibhute, Head of Liver & Multi-organ Transplant Dept., Sahyadri Hospitals, Pune.

The successful transplant was performed by a highly skilled team of doctors, including Dr. Bipin Vibhute, Dr. Apurv Deshpande, Dr. Anirudha Bhosale, Dr. Dinesh Zirpe, Dr. Radhika, Dr. Manish Pathak, Dr. Manoj Raut, Dr. Sheetal Mahajani, Dr. Kiran Shinde along with Transplant coordinator Rahul Tambe and Priyanka Bhujbal.
By: Dr. Naveen Ganjoo, Senior Consultant – Hepatology & Integrated Liver Care, Aster RV Hospital

During the winter season, the liver, an essential organ responsible for a multitude of functions such as metabolism, immunity, digestion, detoxification, and vitamin storage, encounters heightened challenges. Unfortunately, the significance of maintaining liver health tends to be underestimated, resulting in a lack of awareness about the factors that contribute to increased liver issues in colder months. This oversight leads to various complications, with factors like physical inactivity, dehydration, suboptimal dietary choices, temperature fluctuations, excessive sugar intake, and vitamin D deficiency being prominent contributors. This article delves into the intricate details of these factors, underscoring the importance of comprehending and addressing the challenges posed to liver health during the winter season.

Physical Inactivity:

One of the primary contributors to winter-related liver complications is reduced physical activity. Colder temperatures often result in a decrease in physical movement, impacting liver health significantly. Physical activity is a cornerstone in the prevention and management of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). Individuals with various liver conditions, including NAFLD, benefit from regular exercise, making the winter months a critical period to maintain an active lifestyle.

Dehydration:

The winter air tends to be drier, and coupled with reduced water intake due to decreased thirst, dehydration becomes a common concern. Dehydration complicates the liver’s toxin-filtering process, potentially leading to liver damage. Encouraging adequate water consumption during winter is crucial to support optimal liver function and overall well-being.

Dietary Choices:

Winter, synonymous with comfort food, often sees individuals indulging in heavy, fatty meals that can burden the liver. Poor dietary choices contribute to the deterioration of liver health. Raising awareness about the importance of maintaining a balanced and liver-friendly diet during winter is imperative for preventing undue stress on this vital organ.

Temperature and Humidity Fluctuations:

Fluctuations in temperature and humidity play a pivotal role in influencing infection rates, with cold temperatures associated with increased risks for severe infections. This is particularly concerning for individuals with pre-existing liver problems and fatty liver. Understanding the impact of environmental changes on liver health emphasizes the need for proactive measures, such as maintaining a consistent indoor environment and adopting protective clothing in colder temperatures.

Excessive Sugar Intake:

Frequent consumption of sugary hot beverages like tea and coffee during winter can lead to excessive sugar intake. The liver metabolizes fructose to create fat, and an overload of refined sugar can result in a fatty buildup, contributing to liver disease. Encouraging mindful consumption of sugary beverages and promoting alternatives can mitigate this risk.

Vitamin D Deficiency:

Reduced outdoor activity during winter leads to inadequate sunlight exposure, a primary source of vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency is crucially linked to liver health management. Consulting with a healthcare professional for appropriate vitamin D supplements becomes essential to ensure the liver receives the necessary support for optimal function.

Sedentary Lifestyle and Hypercholesterolemia:

Winter’s sedentary lifestyle is a contributing factor to a 22% increase in high cholesterol prevalence, a well-recognized risk factor for NAFLD. Awareness campaigns on the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle, even during colder months, can significantly contribute to preventing hypercholesterolemia and related liver complications.

Alcohol Consumption:

The misconception that alcohol provides warmth leads to a surge in alcohol consumption during winter. However, the perceived warmth is a false sense created by alcohol-induced vasodilation. Prolonged alcohol misuse can result in liver cell damage, hindering the organ’s regenerative capacity. Public awareness campaigns about the risks of excessive alcohol consumption and its impact on liver health are crucial to fostering responsible habits.

Effectively managing liver health challenges during winter necessitates a thorough comprehension of the factors involved and the implementation of proactive measures to minimize potential risks. Key components in this effort include public health initiatives, educational campaigns, and heightened individual awareness, all of which play crucial roles in cultivating behaviors conducive to liver well-being during the colder months. Recognizing the intricate links between lifestyle choices and their repercussions on liver health allows us to collaboratively strive for a winter season that not only provides warmth but also fosters optimal well-being for this indispensable organ.

PUNE: In a rare feat, Sahyadri Hospitals’ Transplant Team successfully performed Pune’s first swap liver transplant. These surgeries were recently performed at Sahyadri Superspeciality Hospital Deccan Gymkhana. Two individuals who were both suffering from liver cirrhosis (a condition characterized by chronic liver damage) underwent life-saving liver transplants simultaneously. The lead surgeon for this swap liver transplant was Dr. Bipin Vibhute, who is also the head of the Liver and Multi-organ Transplant department at Sahyadri Hospitals, Pune.

Although each donor was related to one of the recipients, their livers were not compatible, so Dr. Bipin Vibhute decided to perform a two-way transplant which both families agreed to. The heartwarming story of this swap involves Ajit (Name changed), a teacher from Buldhana, Maharashtra, and Amar (Name changed), a business owner from Ahmednagar District, who shared similar destinies. During the surgery, Swara (Name changed), the wife of Amar donated her liver to Ajit, and Geeta (Name changed) the wife of Ajit donated her liver to Amar.

This grueling 20-hour surgery marked a milestone as the city’s first successful two-way liver transplant swap.

Dr. Bipin Vibhute, Head of the Liver and Multi-organ Transplant Department at Sahyadri Hospitals, said, “Swap transplants have taken place in prominent cities like Mumbai and Delhi before, but the recent one in Pune was a first of its kind. Such exchanges prove to be life-saving for recipients whose relatives are medically fit but cannot donate due to mismatched blood groups or liver size. The two transplants were carried out concurrently by performing surgeries on two donors and two recipients. A medical team comprising of 25 members, including 11 doctors and other staff, collaborated in four operating rooms for more than 20 hours to accomplish this Herculean task.“

He emphasized the significant role that patient counseling plays prior to such procedures. The major challenge witnessed was performing all four surgeries simultaneously in four operating rooms – right from administering anesthesia to completing the transplant.

With the success of the recent swap liver transplant, the doctors at Sahyadri Hospitals are confident of saving more lives in the future.

The transplant team consisted of Hepatobiliary and Liver Transplant Surgeons – Dr. Bipin Vibhute, Dr. Aniruddha Bhosale, Dr. Abhijit Mane, Dr. Vikas Chaudhary, Dr. Sharan Narute, Dr. Anurag Shrimal, Transplant Anaesthetist Dr. Manish Pathak, Dr. Manoj Raut, Transplant Hepatologist Dr. Sheetal Mahajani, Liver Transplant Surgeon Dr. Apoorva Deshpande, transplant coordinators Rahul Tambe, Arun Ashokan and Aman Bele and Medical Social Worker Sharmila Padhye and Ajinkya Borate.
