MUMBAI: The Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) vertical of Larsen & Toubro has won new orders in the Middle East for expanding and strengthening the electricity grids at high voltage levels.

Saudi Arabia

The different operating regions in Saudi Arabia’s national electricity network are being interconnected through High Voltage Direct Current links that enable exchange of power between regions and enhanced system resilience. L&T has secured orders to establish ±500kV HVDC Transmission Links associated with these interconnections.

L&T has also won orders for three more packages involving two 380kV overhead transmission lines and a bulk supply 380kV Gas Insulated Substation. These elements contribute significantly to the renewable generation interconnection and fortification of the grid.

United Arab Emirates

In Abu Dhabi, L&T has received an order to build two major 400kV Gas Insulated Substations. In addition to civil works, the scope also involves Series Current Limiting Reactors, Auto Transformers, related control, protection, substation monitoring & alarm systems including fault and power quality monitoring, telecommunication systems, and integration with the Load Dispatch Centre. These substations will enhance the power transfer capacity of the electricity grid.

The flag-off comes 11 months ahead of the contractual delivery schedule, demonstrating L&T’s unwavering commitment to advancing India’s nuclear power program and helping the country meet its net zero carbon emissions target by 2070. L&T delivered the first Steam Generator to Kaiga 5 & 6 units in March this year creating a new industrial benchmark.

Steam Generator is a crucial heat exchanger that converts water into steam using the heat generated within a nuclear reactor core.

Speaking on the flag-off, Anil V Parab, full-time director & senior executive Vice President of L&T Heavy Engineering & L&T Valves, emphasized L&T’s commitment to excellence and customer delight by leveraging Industry 4.0 and cutting-edge manufacturing techniques. He said, “L&T Heavy Engineering, as an industry trendsetter, continues to create global benchmarks in the delivery of critical nuclear equipment. Eleven-month early delivery of this Second Steam Generator is another example of consistency and resilience even during pandemic and supply chain disruptions. We are fully geared up as the trusted and dedicated partner of the Department of Atomic Energy / NPCIL to triple the current installed nuclear power capacity to 100 GWe by 2047.”

The Heavy Engineering vertical of L&T has a proven track record of manufacturing and supplying technology-intensive equipment and systems globally across sectors such as refineries, oil & gas, petrochemicals, fertilizers, and nuclear power.
