5th city in India where commuters can book metro tickets directly on the Uber app

PUNE: Uber today announced the launch of metro ticketing on the Uber app in Pune, making daily commuting easier and more seamless for Punekars enabled by ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce). Starting today, commuters can plan their metro journeys and purchase QR-based tickets directly within the Uber app without waiting in ticket queues or switching between multiple apps.

Pune is now the fifth Indian city where Uber has rolled out metro ticketing, following launches in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai. The launch comes at a time when more commuters are increasingly looking for faster, smarter, and more connected ways to move around the city. Now, commuters who book their metro ticket on the Uber app can avail a 50% discount upto ₹ 10 for a limited time period.

During his recent India visit, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi shared that more than 10 million metro rides have already been booked through the Uber app across India, underlining the growing popularity of integrated public transit solutions. Built through ONDC’s interoperable network, these integrations are part of Uber’s broader effort to bring public transport and last-mile mobility together in one seamless experience. Pune commuters can now book metro tickets directly on the Uber app using UPI payments and continue their onward journey using Uber Auto, Bike, Go, and other mobility options.

Neha Kapoor, Head – Strategic Initiatives, Uber India & South Asia, said, “Metro ticketing on Uber is making everyday commuting simpler by bringing public transit and last-mile mobility together in one place. With Pune becoming the fifth city to go live, we’re excited to expand a seamless, end-to-end mobility experience to more riders. More than 10 million metro journeys have already been booked through Uber across India, and we’re seeing strong adoption as commuters increasingly look for faster, more connected ways to move around cities. This is a powerful example of how India’s Digital Public Infrastructure is helping reimagine urban mobility at a population scale.”

Shri Shravan Hardikar (IAS), Managing Director, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation, said, “Ticketing integration with Uber will play an important role in improving commuter convenience and encouraging greater adoption of public transport. By enabling metro ticketing directly on the Uber app, we are making travel planning simpler and more accessible for Pune’s commuters.”

Vibhor Jain, MD & CEO, ONDC, said, “Uber’s launch of Pune Metro ticketing, its fifth city in under a year, demonstrates how ONDC’s open network accelerates transit rollout. Pune Metro commuters can now book QR tickets directly in the Uber app, cutting out extra steps and reaching more riders. By linking Pune’s Metro to a national digital transit backbone, ONDC makes journeys seamless while enabling Pune Metro to boost ridership and reduce operational costs. This launch is a major step toward our shared goal of expanding easy, sustainable public transport.”

How to book Pune Metro tickets on the Uber app:

Open the Uber app

Select the “Metro” option on the home screen

Enter your entry and destination stations

Purchase your QR ticket using UPI

Scan and ride with ease

Uber continues to explore metro ticketing integrations in more cities across India.

With the opening of the Dharavi–Acharya Atre Chowk stretch, the Mumbai Metro Line 3 project brings the city one step closer to a fully integrated underground transit system.

INDIA: A key stretch of Mumbai Metro Line 3, from Dharavi to Acharya Atre Chowk, has been inaugurated, marking steady progress in the city’s underground metro network. The project is being implemented by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), with financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) program, in partnership with the Government of India.

Commenting on the occasion, TAKEUCHI Takuro, Chief Representative of JICA India, said, “The partial opening of Mumbai Metro Line 3 highlights our shared commitment to strengthening sustainable urban mobility in India. It brings us closer to realizing a more efficient, inclusive, and environmentally friendly transport network in Mumbai. By offering faster, more accessible commute options, this line will significantly improve the daily travel experience of thousands of passengers. Our cooperation with the Government of India and MMRCL has been instrumental in this achievement, and we remain committed to supporting the successful completion of the full corridor.”

Mumbai Metro Line 3, spanning approximately 34 kilometers, is the city’s first underground metro line and will connect the southern business district of Cuffe Parade to SEEPZ in north-central Mumbai. With 26 underground and 1 at-grade station, the project is expected to significantly reduce congestion, shorten travel times, and provide a safer, more comfortable commuting experience. Once fully operational, it is expected to serve about 1.5 million passengers daily, with trains running every three to four minutes. 6 stations have become operational in this phase, bringing the total number of operational stations to 16.Travel time from the airport to Acharya Atre Chowk Station will be reduced to approximately 27 minutes. Passengers will be able to travel this section in less than half the time it would take by car.

In addition to enhancing urban mobility, the project promotes inclusive travel through features such as women-only coaches, priority seating, and surveillance systems to enhance safety in both stations and trains. The operationalization of this section is expected to provide immediate benefits to daily commuters while contributing to broader climate goals by easing road traffic congestion and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by an estimated 261,968 tons of CO₂ equivalent annually.

The total cost of the Mumbai Metro Line 3 project is estimated at JPY 680,692 million, with JICA providing financial support of JPY 354,132 million through five tranches since 2013.

As a key initiative under JICA’s partnership with India, the Mumbai Metro Line 3 project is a step toward building a modern, connected, and climate-resilient urban future. By improving everyday access to safe, affordable, and efficient public transport, the project not only enhances quality of life for millions of commuters but also supports broader goals around reducing emissions, easing traffic congestion, and shaping sustainable cities for tomorrow.

PUNE: A group of 100 children from St. Mira’s Primary School took the Pune Metro – for a special reason – on the occasion of World Animal Day, October 4, 2024.

Gathering at Ruby Hall Metro Station, they took the train to Civil Court. The 8 to 9-year-old students displayed colorful placards and chanted heartfelt slogans such as “Birds and animals are our brothers and sisters,” “Save animals, Save Earth,” and “Shoot with a camera, not with guns.”

World Animal Day marks the anniversary of St. Francis. The student rally also remembered Pune’s saint, Sadhu Vaswani, who advocated animal rights.

With unwavering enthusiasm, the children, accompanied by dedicated teachers, engaged the commuters, inviting them to pledge to go meatless for at least one day on November 25, the birthday of Sadhu Vaswani.

One student expressed the motivation behind their efforts: “We should stop killing animals for our meals and taking their skin for our dresses. We should rather take care of them, feed them, and love them. I want everyone to do the same.”

The school principal, Ruby Karna, noted the strategic decision to engage with the public in a place where people often have a moment to pause and listen while waiting for their trains and stops. “This not only helps in spreading awareness but also instills in the children the values of kindness and compassion toward all living beings. When they take the extra effort to convince others, they will themselves remember it for a longer time.” the principal added.

The students’ infectious commitment to this cause has undoubtedly made a significant impact, fostering a greater understanding of the need for animal rights and vegetarianism within the community. As they continue to spread their message, the hope remains that more individuals will join in their efforts to create a more compassionate world for all beings.

GURUGRAM: Air India, India’s leading global airline, has collaborated with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Delhi International Airport (DIAL) to facilitate check-in for international travelers at two metro stations in Delhi – New Delhi and Shivaji Stadium. The Delhi Airport Check-in & Baggage Drop facility allows passengers to check in their baggage at the metro station, giving outstation travelers the option to explore the city baggage-free. Meanwhile, their baggage gets securely loaded onto the aircraft through an advanced automated infrastructure created by DMRC & DIAL.

Currently available for domestic journeys, this service will now be extended to international travelers and will remain operational at the two metro stations from 0700 hrs to 2100 hrs. The check-in can be done between 12 hours and 2 hours before flight departure for domestic itineraries and between 4 hours to 2 hours for international schedules.

“Our partnership with DMRC & DIAL stands testament to our commitment to offering passengers an enhanced and seamless travel experience. This initiative not only provides a cost-effective option for travelers coming from distant locations but also helps control congestion at the airport, leading to a better experience for all our customers. Further to the technology interventions partnered and implemented by Air India & DIAL, such as DigiYatra, and Self-Baggage Drop machines at airport terminals, this initiative will significantly enhance the convenience and satisfaction of our customers, said Rajesh Dogra, Chief Customer Experience Officer, Air India.

The frequency of the metro is every 10 minutes, and it takes 19 minutes to reach the departure level at Delhi Airport Terminal 3, making the journey of each traveler faster and hassle-free.
