And to add to the fun, here are some of India’s food trends from 2025

With a decade-long record of being the favourite, Biryani continued to reign supreme! With 93 million biryanis ordered in 2025 (that’s 194 orders per minute or 3.25 biryanis every second), Biryani is the undisputed King, proving that while trends may come and go, India’s deep-rooted love for this aromatic masterpiece remains constant. Chicken Biryani (57.7 million orders) was the most loved in the Biryani universe with the highest number of repeat orders.

Burgers were the second most loved with 44.2 million orders, followed by Pizzas with 40.1 million orders. Another favourite dish was Veg Dosa with 26.2 million orders, proving that this crispy, golden classic is much loved by foodies.

Snack time (3- 7 pm) is a mood, and we all live in it.
Dessert delights and indulgence: While White Chocolate Cake topped the charts with 6.9 million orders, 2025 was also the year of love for desi favourites. Chocolate Cake (5.4 million orders) and Gulab Jamun (4.5 million orders) featured in the top 3 desserts ordered. Kaju Barfi (2 million orders) and Besan Ladoo (1.9 million orders) ranked 2nd and 3rd in Indian sweets.

Chocolate was the flavour of the year in ice creams, with 3.3 million Dark Chocolate ice creams and 2.6 million Chocolate Sundaes ordered.

Global cuisines entered the carts with Mexican (16 million orders), Tibetan (12 million+ orders), and Korean (4.7 million orders) cuisines becoming consumer favourites. Matcha was the most searched global cuisine in 2025.

Hyperlocal is the new authentic, with love for local cuisines. Pahari cuisine marked a 9x growth, while orders in Malabari, Rajathani, Malvani, and other regional cuisines also grew almost 2x in the past year.

Without a doubt, Dinner is the ultimate Bahubali of mealtimes, with dinner orders nearly 32% higher than lunch orders

Big Heart, Bigger Celebrations: A single consumer in Hyderabad spent Rs 47,106 and ordered 65 boxes of Dry Fruit Cookies Gift Pack in August to kickstart the festive period!

SMPP to supply advanced ballistic helmets and bulletproof jackets to the Indian Army

NEW DELHI. SMPP, an indigenous designer, developer, and manufacturer of defence equipment, has added another feather to its cap. It has been awarded dual contracts under Emergency Procurement 5 on June 22, 2025, by the Indian Army for the supply of Bulletproof Jackets and Advanced Ballistic Helmets. The total value of the order is more than ₹300 Cr. According to this contract, SMPP will supply 27,700 bulletproof jackets and 11,700 Advanced Ballistic Helmets to the Indian army.

SMPP’s differentiated value proposition is built on supplying products with a focus on critical safety standards to be perceived as a trusted brand name in the defence sector. Speaking on the new contract win, Dr. Shiv Chand Kansal, an Ex-IITian, Chairman and Managing Director of the company, stated that “We conduct our business with the motto to ‘protect those who protect us’ and a vision to lead the way in equipping armed forces with advanced technological solutions. Thus, with this new contract, SMPP has once again shown beyond doubt to be better than the best and true to its motto.

The Bulletproof Jackets come with advanced features like dynamic load distribution and a quick release system, which increase operational efficiency by enhancing soldier comfort while offering protection against the most lethal armor-piercing bullets. The Advanced Ballistic helmet is the world’s first helmet that protects against AK-47 fired lethal Hard Steel Core ammunition.

Speaking on the continual success of SMPP, Ashish Kansal, also an Ex-IITian, Director & CEO of the company, stated that “SMPP has been leading the personal protection market in India with more than 90% market share (as per 1Lattice report) owing to its immense focus on R&D with over 17 patents filed and 10 patents granted. This obsession with research ensures constant upgradation of product to meet the evolving needs of our soldiers”.

SMPP has a manufacturing facility for personal protection products at Palwal (Haryana) and made its first ballistic grade boron carbide plate in 2008 with its in-house developed technology. The testament to the technology is the continuous order from a global aircraft manufacturer since 2014. From one of the largest orders of 186,138 bullet-resistant jackets of Level III and III+ protection for the Indian Army in 2018 which was delivered not just on time but well before the scheduled delivery date, SMPP has come a long way in supplying protective gear to our soldiers including specialist products like Ballistic Helmets for Sikh Soldiers and Ballistic Shields which stop Armor Piercing bullets.

The Indian defence manufacturing sector is witnessing an unprecedented transformation, fueled by the government’s dynamic initiatives. As the demand for Indigenous defence solutions grows, local manufacturers are stepping up to meet the needs of the Indian Armed Forces and beyond. Among these, SMPP Limited has carved a unique niche for itself by emerging as a major contributor in enabling India to achieve ‘Atmanirbharta’ in Defence production through its outstanding quality and yet competitive pricing capabilities.

By Special Correspondent
PUNE: The ongoing unauthorized operation of Orchid Primary School within Jay Cooperative Housing Society in Pune has emerged as a glaring example of systemic failure and administrative apathy. Despite numerous legal orders and resident complaints spanning over two decades, the school, run by the New Maharashtra Education Trust, continues to function in clear violation of civic and educational norms.

A History Steeped in Irregularities

Established in 2000 as a modest playgroup by Mr. Nasir Akbar Khan, Mrs. Shaheda Nasir Khan, and Mr. Asadullah Musafir Khan, the institution began functioning without necessary approvals from educational and municipal authorities. In 2008, the playgroup was converted into a full-fledged school and brought under the umbrella of the New Maharashtra Education Trust. This transition, however, was not accompanied by the requisite legal permissions.

Over the years, residents of Jay Cooperative Housing Society have lodged multiple complaints highlighting unauthorized construction, misrepresentation in official documents, and the misuse of residential premises for commercial educational purposes. These allegations, supported by structural audit reports, point to significant safety hazards and administrative non-compliance.

Judiciary and Administrative Directives Ignored

The school’s legal history is extensive. In 2007, the Deputy Registrar of Co-operative Societies rejected applications related to unauthorized properties held by the school. This decision was subsequently upheld by the Bombay High Court. Despite these legal setbacks, the school has continued operations, seemingly immune to regulatory action.

A 2008 Memorandum of Understanding between the school’s trustees and society members included a commitment to relocate the institution. However, residents claim that the assurances have proved empty, and the school continues to operate in contempt of judicial directives.

Community Under Duress

The fallout has been severe for the residents of Jay Cooperative Housing Society. Beyond the noise, traffic, and strain on shared infrastructure, several residents allege they have faced harassment and intimidation. Instances of physical altercations and threats reportedly linked to school management have been brought to the attention of local law enforcement, but residents allege that follow-up action has been minimal.

In addition, expert reports warn that the unauthorized structural modifications within residential flats used for classrooms pose risks to both students and residents.

Authorities Aware, Yet Inaction Persists

Despite receiving multiple notices from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the School Education and Sports Department, Orchid Primary School continues to operate without impunity. Authorities have acknowledged violations of the National Building Code, the Right to Education Act, and other statutory norms, yet enforcement has remained largely symbolic.

Recent inspections and official reports have confirmed these violations, urging immediate corrective action. Still, residents argue that unless these findings are backed by real-time enforcement, they remain ineffectual.

Urgent Need for Accountability

This case highlights an urgent need for an overhaul in enforcement mechanisms and regulatory follow-through. The continuous operation of an illegal educational institution in a residential complex not only endangers lives but also sets a dangerous precedent for disregard of the law.

The residents of Jay Cooperative Housing Society have called on the Pune Municipal Corporation, education authorities, and the Chief Minister’s Office to take decisive action. Their demand: the relocation of the school, restoration of legal order, and protection of their rights as citizens.

As the saga of Orchid Primary School unfolds, it stands as a testament to the consequences of unchecked violations and the urgent need for systemic accountability in urban governance.

MUMBAI: India’s gifting habits are evolving rapidly, with online platforms playing a central role in festive and occasion-based shopping. In the first 11 days of February 2025 alone, Unicommerce’s Uniware platform processed over 10 million gifting order items, reflecting a larger shift toward digital-first gifting. Driven by convenience and personalization, this transformation is reshaping consumer behavior, with younger cohorts of buyers leading the move from traditional in-person gifting to tech-enabled G-Commerce (Gift-commerce, tech-assisted gifting) as a mainstream segment of e-commerce.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, this trend is becoming increasingly evident, with a surge in demand for personal gifts. The popular categories this Valentine’s Day sales period are beauty and makeup, healthy eatables, fitness products, and books, among others. Brands are also offering increased options online, with a choice of special packaging or gift wrapping designed for the occasion. This is why online gifting portals are becoming a go-to destination for personal gifting.

E-commerce enablement SaaS platform Unicommerce, trusted by over 7,000 leading brands, has analyzed gifting trends based on orders processed through its flagship platform, Uniware. Its analysis based on the orders processed through its platform, shows what and how India is buying ahead of Valentine’s Day ‘25.

Most shopped products included skincare gift combos, de-tan kits, makeup face palettes, healthy chocolate combos, scent hampers, books and bookmarks, and jewelry products like silver bands, rings, and gold pendants.

Tier-II cities drove order volume growth during the nine days with over 37% higher volumes as compared to the same period in 2024.

There is overall a 24% YoY GMV growth, with a higher value growth seen on brand websites than on marketplaces.

Marketplaces recorded higher volumes across categories, including makeup and jewelry. Brand websites witnessed higher demand for apparel and accessories like couple wear combos, polo t-shirts, and travel accessories, including sling bags and wallets.

Rising consumer inclination is seen toward personalized and custom-curated offerings. Brands selling perishables like flowers are offering multiple customization options. Personalization for apparel and accessories was another popular choice with users.

While online gifting for Valentine’s Day begins in early February, there are multiple gifting occasions throughout the year in India, with Raksha Bandhan, Diwali, Eid, Christmas, and wedding season witnessing a surge in the purchase of gift items. Expected to reach USD 92.3 bn by 2030, the Indian gifting market has evolved rapidly with the entry of new-age D2C brands and e-commerce platforms, including names like IGP.com, GIVA, and Phool.co, Nathabi,t, and Zouk along with others.

Tarun Joshi, Founder & CEO of IGP.com said, “Valentine’s remains one of the biggest occasions for gifting in India, and flowers continue to dominate as the preferred choice. As a leading gifting brand in cakes, flowers, and personalized gifts and with technology at the heart of our business, we provide a consistent shopping experience, offering a diverse selection of personalized gifts across categories and on multiple platforms, supporting both discovery and fulfillment.”

Aditya Labroo, Chief Operating Officer, GIVA said, “The online gifting sector in India is playing an important role in driving consumer demand. With technology being the foundational pillar of our omnichannel operations, we are committed to offering seamless shopping experiences to our customers browsing across physical and digital touchpoints.”

Over the last two years (CY 2023 & 2024), Unicommerce recorded over 40 mn order items processed through the Uniware platform by more than 800 gift-commerce sellers, including online-first D2C brands, omnichannel retailers as well as small online sellers.

VADODARA: Wardwizard Innovations & Mobility Ltd. (WIML), a prominent manufacturer of electric vehicles under the ‘Joy e-bike’ and ‘Joy e-rik’ brands in India, has secured a significant order worth USD 1.29 billion from Beulah International Development Corporation, one of the renowned full-service business integration companies and EPC firms in the Philippines backed by RP Connect. With this, WIML will deliver products from its existing portfolio, including electric two-wheelers, and three-wheelers in commercial and Passenger Vehicles segments, and develop four-wheelers for commercial vehicles for the Philippines markets. This order is part of a strategic collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), to revolutionize the public transportation system in the Philippines with electric vehicles.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Mr. Shreyas Kurhekar, Head of Production and Business Development (Exports), Wardwizard Innovations & Mobility Limited, and Ms. Nadia Arroyo, President of Beulah International Development Corporation, along with other esteemed members of both the organizations.

This partnership aims to transform public transport by bringing innovative electric vehicle technology to the Philippines, creating new job opportunities, and supporting the local economy.

Yatin Gupte, Chairman & Managing Director of Wardwizard Innovations & Mobility Ltd., expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership: “We would like to thank Beulah International and RPConnect for showcasing their trust in our technology and robust product portfolio. India is becoming a hub of electric mobility for the global market, and such collaborations are a testament to our efforts in this direction. This opportunity will allow us to introduce our cutting-edge electric 2W Scooters, and develop 3W e-Trike (D+10), e-Trike (D+3 Passenger), e-Trike (D+5), e-Trike Cargo, Electric Mini Truck (1.5 Ton) and Golf Carts (6 & 14 seater) for the Philippines market.”

The partnership aligns with the Philippine Government’s Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP), an ambitious initiative led by the Department of Transportation to provide a safer and more systematic daily transportation service by replacing outdated petrol and diesel vehicles with modern electric alternatives. Through this strategic partnership, Wardwizard Innovations & Mobility Ltd and Beulah International will bring innovative electric vehicle technology to the Philippines to drastically transform the transportation landscape.

Nadia Arroyo, President of Beulah International Development Corporation, highlighted the collaboration’s economic benefits: “Wardwizard’s cutting-edge EV solutions will catapult the public transportation in the Philippines and we are eager to see the change. Besides changing the face of the transportation system, this initiative will create new employment opportunities and bring significant investment to support the local economy over the next 10 years.”
