BENGALURU: India is seeing an increase in the incidence of lung cancer, especially among women and younger age groups. This is due to more and more women taking up smoking in the country, and the rising habit of early-age smoking in the younger age groups. Cases of lung cancer are also increasing in non-smokers and light smokers due to rising pollution levels and passive smoking. This was said by doctors of Sammprada Multi-speciality Hospital, Bengaluru, ahead of World Lung Cancer Day.

Dr. Radheshyam Naik, Consultant Medical Oncologist & Hematologist at Sammprada Multi-speciality Hospital commented, “Over 80% of lung cancers are related to tobacco smoking in its various forms. The risk increases with the duration of smoking and the number of cigarettes one smokes per day. Early-age smoking raises the risk substantially. Exposure to carcinogens like asbestos, in addition to smoking, also increases the risk of lung cancer several-fold. Other important risk factors include passive smoking which accounts for 5% of lung cancers. Pollution from traffic and burning fossil fuels indoors for cooking also cause lung cancer, especially among non-smokers.”

Dr. Shivacharan P.V., Consultant Medical oncologist said, “The incidence of lung cancer is 5.6 in 100,000 population. It accounts for 5.9% of all cancers and 8% of all cancer-related deaths. Lung cancer is traditionally the disease of the 4th and 5th decade of life. The highest proportion of cases is recorded in the age group of 55 to 64 years. About 20-25 % of lung cancer patients survive for 5 years or more, while only 10-15% survive for 10 years or more. The associated morbidity and mortality can be reduced by early diagnosis.”

Dr. Vinod K Ramani, Preventive Oncologist at Sammprada Multi-speciality Hospital shared, “Most cases of lung cancer are diagnosed in Stages III and IV when it is already in an advanced state. Only 20-30% of patients get diagnosed in Stages 1 and II. There are several reasons for this.”

Dr.Vishwajeeth Pai, Consultant Medical oncologist added, “A proportion of smokers have chronic bronchitis which is difficult to differentiate from cancer, and hence they present themselves late to a doctor. Many cases of lung cancer get mistaken for tuberculosis initially. There is also reluctance among Indians to get screened for cancer regularly.”

Talking about the main challenges in the treatment of lung cancer, Dr. Varun Kumar, Consultant Radiation Oncologist at Sammprada Multi-speciality Hospital, said: “Many lung cancer patients are smokers, alcoholics or elderly people, with compromised lungs, liver, and heart. The toxicity associated with therapy can be substantial and many patients are unable to tolerate it. The cost of therapy, especially of newer treatments like immune therapy, targeted therapy, and anti-angiogenic treatment, can also be an issue for many patients. The efficacy of therapy is reduced if the patient seeks treatment in advanced stages of the disease. Many patients are addicted to tobacco and continue their smoking habit even during treatment.”

Dr Ajay GV, Consultant Radiation Oncologist at Sammprada Multi-speciality Hospital remarked “To effectively tackle the challenge of lung cancer, there should be regular screening of smokers supported by quit-smoking programs organized by the government and civil society. There also needs to be a change in attitude of physicians who should treat every patient with lung problems as a potential cancer patient.”

CHICAGO, IL: Prayagraj Hule is a renowned Vedantic Scholar. He recently concluded a 5-day series on self-help at the International University of Vedic Wellness in Streamwood, IL.

His talks resonated with people across Chicago land, leaving a profound impact on the youth and individuals of diverse backgrounds. This universal message transcended race and religion, offering knowledge that spoke to the shared human experience.

In collaboration with the University, Prayagraj will offer youth and adult retreats in 2024 as well as online sessions throughout the year. For more information contact Aparna Kulkarni at 847-306-7616 or AparnaK@umasinc.com.

Unearthing Human Nature

Vedanta is a science which deals with human beings. An encyclopedia that has the compilation of subtlest thoughts related to the human relationship with the Transcendental Self. Rendered by, several enlightened sages of India. These great people dedicated their lives thousands of years ago to reflect upon the mystery of human origin, purpose of living, and constitution of human inner nature. The effort of such crystalline contemplation culminated in the Vedanta philosophy, which decoded the apogee of happiness. Present-day humans are disconnected from their roots and live in ignorance about this state of Bliss.

The Labyrinth

Today, the world over alma maters and mushrooming educational institutions are priming students with a lot of data. No doubt valuable to earn wealth and mark the material progress of nations. But limit the young in their rational approach and application of the knowledge provided. Very few truly implement the knowledge gained. The rest just follow a beaten pattern to work. Consequently, the young become victims of contemporaneity pressure. Affliction arises out of work culture and impending personal perils caused by a lack of clarity in balancing their work and professional lives.

The Unrestrained Mind, the Ignorance of Intellect

The youth are unaware of Vedantic education. People hence find themselves tormented by the pernicious traits of an ungoverned mind. The lack of higher values in present-day education has made humans weak. They find challenges in life difficult to handle, mostly, amongst well-educated and the rich. Depression and stress-related ailments have risen to alarming proportions. Divorce has reached record-breaking numbers worldwide. The human mind turns malignant when left unattended to make decisions by itself in the absence of the intellect. As a result, greed has led to decadence in society. Humans have turned greedy to amass ill-gained wealth and devour millions, billions, without paying any heed to others living juxtaposed in denial. Ultimately, the greedy only find themselves isolated and lonely.

The Problem Lies Elsewhere

Knowledge gained from universities has no doubt raised the standard of human living and made people wealthy and indulgent. But are they happy? By their admission, people have lost their morals, peace, and cheer. The standard of life has deteriorated to a substantial level.

The lack of Vedantic knowledge also makes it difficult for individuals to unravel one’s true aptitude. As a result, few flourish in their natural field of work. Others experience work as a burden, instead of finding it a source of pleasure and joy. Vedanta brings in clarity to discover one’s aptitude and subsequently identify a suitable field of work. One then finds success by employing the right technique of action guided by the intellect. When work becomes a pleasure, so does the working environment.

Live to Give

Giving should be preceded by thinking. Take a look at the charity structure in the world. Ideally, it should be the confluence of feeling and thinking to give society punctiliously. A true philanthropist will initiate research if wealth gives charity, and has resolved a whirlwind of present predicaments. Corporations today have started charity enclaves, urged by the government to be socially responsible. But has this changed the mindset of people? Seldom has the donor looked into the effect and effort of organizations and hence the persisting quandaries in the world remain recurring. Genuine philanthropists share their wealth. However, most charitable entities are unable to reach the bottom of the problem. Applying balm to a wound is calming. But that will not help in getting to the source of the disease. True charity is supposed to lift a person spiritually. Make one independent to progress along with others. Not make them dependent selfish, lethargic, and diseased. Remember, “Candent living brings forth Prudent giving”.

The Time is Ticking

Few care about Vedantic intellectual education. An education is beyond the precincts of secular education provided by schools and universities. The educated should mull over the recent graph of wars, poverty, crimes, rapes, stress, divorces… These unfortunate escalations of events have gripped all families in the world. Even children are not spared, as crime perpetrated on children is on the rise.

Pressure on children has led them not to cooperate with parents and educators. Eager to leave homes, the moment they reach the periphery of youth. Therefore, the necessity of bringing in a value system alongside secular education in society should be implemented imminently. The good and spiritual side of humans has to be tapped. The negative will then slowly diminish. Vedanta impacts an individual to harness one’s mind. By imbibing its knowledge, you gain intellectual clarity. This then creates collectively awakened human beings to be more affable and reach out. There is a saying: “You cannot reach God unless you serve & love the expressions of God”.

For the Youth

The future of every country is the power of youth. Parents must pause for a moment and look behind at the legacy they leave, Asian families in recent times have a tradition of debts. In Westerners, a tradition of separation is in relationships, angst in their behavioral habits, and pills to pop anxiety. This directly affects every child.

The youth get influenced by anyone higher in stature. They want to emulate everything their icons do. It is hereby the responsibility of all leaders to leave trails of culture and wisdom that follow sound intellectual reason. Social media has become the death knell of values, a harbinger of sorrow. A disorder which is the eating up concentration of youth and even adults. Use it to evolve, and benefit others, but don’t get abused by it, harm others, and devolve!

An effort has to be made to save the youth. Leaders need to plan a paradigm shift in education. An awakened person would leave behind a cleaner world and not unresolved filth for the young to remove. Albert Einstein made an apt, wise statement: ‘We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them’.

Oh, folks! Isn’t it time to wake up? Awaken the intellect with the knowledge of Vedanta.

It is hence time to go back only to move forward in Time.

PUNE: On February 11th, 2024, Pune experienced a heartwarming display of kindness as The People Project Event unfolded its magic across the city. Organized by Bridge Builders, the youth wing of the Sadhu Vaswani Mission, in collaboration with the With Love NGO, this event aimed to sprinkle the pixie dust of compassion and spread smiles far and wide.

Participants, ranging from individuals to families, schools, and even corporate teams, gathered at the Mission on this Sunday morning. With excitement and enthusiasm, the participants embarked on a unique kindness marathon, ready to make a difference in their community.

Dimple Somji from With Love Ngo explained, “Throughout the morning, teams ventured into the streets of Pune, armed not with maps or gadgets, but with hearts full of compassion. They surprised strangers with acts of kindness, eased burdens, fed hungry souls, and shared love in countless ways“

Neha Milani from Bridge Builders added, “From distributing meals to the less fortunate to offering a helping hand to those in need, every act of kindness painted the city with hues of warmth and humanity. The collective efforts of participants transformed ordinary moments into extraordinary memories“

The People Project was not just a one-day affair; it was a testament to the power of collective kindness and the impact it can have on communities. It reminded us that even the smallest acts of compassion can create ripples of positivity that reverberate far beyond the streets of Pune.

The curators of the event urge all of us to carry forward the spirit of kindness in our daily lives, making compassion a guiding force in all that we do.

INDIA: In a mythical world of colors where spirituality and craftsmanship dance together, OBEETEE Carpets and Tissage Rugs have joined hands for the second time to proudly present their new collection, ‘Chroma People.’ This collection goes beyond the upcoming color trends, it uses color as a metaphor and is an analogy for the fabric of life in general. Inspired by the captivating tradition of the Chroma tribe, this collection is a celebration of the divine essence found within the vibrant spectrum of colors.

The Chroma tribe, rooted in centuries-old beliefs, once respected only sober, monochrome tones as the rightful choice for humanity. However, an awakening within the tribe revealed the profound power and cultural significance of embracing the vivid colors of nature, previously avoided as omens of misfortune. This transformation gave birth to a spiritual journey, where the wool and yarn that crafted the collection became symbolic threads binding generations and preserving ancient weaving traditions.

This one-of-a-kind collection explores four sets/rooms, each representing a color admired by the Chroma People, and what it means to them. The collection is based on an interval of time in the Chroma people’s lives: Green represents Dawn, Yellow represents Forenoon, Blue represents High Noon, and Red represents Dusk. It should be experienced in that order.

Green: Symbolizing creativity and renewal, Green reflects the Chroma People’s embrace of new beginnings and the transformative energy of dawn.

Yellow: Signifying daydreams and manifestation, Yellow showcases the power of thoughts and beliefs in weaving visionary potential into everyday life for the Chroma People.

Blue: Capturing a journey of cleansing and purity, blue washes away negativity, leaving behind a vibrant canvas of endless possibilities and renewal for the Chroma People.

Red: In the vivid hue of Red, the Chroma People express faith in their art, where each stroke becomes a sacred ritual, representing the divine essence infused into the fabric of life.

“We’re thrilled to unveil the Tissage’s Chroma Collection, a tribute to the Chroma tribe’s profound connection with color.
PUNE: Every 1 in 9 Indians are likely to develop and get diagnosed with cancer, especially youngsters. There is a constant conflict as to how they would get married or lead a normal life. That is when a website like Ātman Matrimonial initiates to help people suffering from medical conditions like Cancer, HIV, Thalassemia, Diabetes, and Physical Disabilities to find their life partners. This was announced by Supriya and Rahul Shinde during a Press Conference held at CC & Co, Prabhat Road today.

Rahul Shinde and his wife Supriya Shinde; Founders of Ātman Matrimonial support people through counseling and looking for desirable companions for them. This idea is developed from their own experiences when Rahul was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML); a type of blood cancer just 15 days after their marriage. Over the course of time, Supriya started interacting with other cancer patients and their families about her experiences and how they deal with her husband’s medical condition. She also interacted with various specialists to understand the different types of blood cancer and their treatments, leading to her counseling sessions at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Research Center.

After elaborate research and an urge to help the people, Rahul and Supriya couldn’t spot a platform even across the globe, that would support people with medical conditions to find a partner. Also, Supriya has always believed that instead of looking out for someone to do something for us, why not do it on our own? That’s how Atman’s website started with the understanding that there is a lack of awareness in society about such a concept of health problems and that people want to get married even after surviving or being in remission of their medical conditions.

The process of Ātman starts by registering at the matrimony, followed by a counseling session with both individuals and creating matchmaking if any. It then leads to the couple’s meeting, later involving their families. Eventually, if the couple decides to get married, the last and compulsory step at Ātman Matrimonial is to set up a doctor’s meeting. In this step, the girl’s family meets the boy’s doctor and vice versa.

One such success story at Ātman Matrimonial involves a 35-year-old cancer survivor and a 29-year-old in cancer remission, who have been married for 5 months now. The couple Reha and Indranil (Name changed) got in touch with Supriya through counseling sessions during their treatments and ultimately, they registered themselves at Ātman Matrimonial.

“Nothing in the world is more powerful than an idea whose time has come,” wrote Victor Hugo, the French novelist and poet centuries ago.

Today I would like to talk about two ideas that were unique and seminal and changed the course of Indian polity irrevocably.

The first was Rajiv Gandhi’s ‘Sadbhavana Yatra’ which was undertaken by the great leader in 1990 at a time when our country was being torn apart by forces of casteism post the ‘Mandal Commission’ report.

32 years later his son the dynamic, daring, and charismatic Rahul Gandhi undertook his ‘Bharat Jodo yatra’ when India was fighting the ogre of communalism, the monster of hatred, and the multi-headed hydra of divisive forces.

Both ideas were singular, and both ushered in a renaissance of peace, amity, and tolerance and restored faith in the power of peace.

“Whenever virtue subsides and wickedness prevails, I manifest Myself. To establish virtue, to destroy evil, to save the good I come from Yuga (age) to Yuga,” declared Lord Krishna to his disciple Arjuna in Bhagavad Gita.

It would not be an exaggeration to say, that the Lord did not descend himself but inspired his apostles from two generations of the Gandhi family to usher in a fresh renaissance of peace, positivity, and brotherhood.

During his Yatra, Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “32 years ago, Papa started his Sadabhavna Yatra. He had sacrificed his life for the unity and integrity of India. Goodwill is the most unique value of humanity. I, and the Congress party, will not allow it to collapse in the face of any divisive force.”

Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra assumes added significance because the country is caught in the throes of a far more perilous situation than it was in the 1990s.

Our nation is being divided by right-wing organizations who want to implement and force their ideology and ensure that India is transformed into a Hindu Rashtra.

This will destroy the secular fabric of the country and blow to smithereens the ideals which our founding fathers fought and later stood for. In such a scenario we need a strong and vibrant leader to fight this scourge and this trailblazer, this architect of modern thought is Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi has proved to be a leader far ahead of his times, a sane voice in the madness and chaos that seems to be engulfing our nation. To prove my point let me elucidate:

Rahul had foretold that the demon of demonetization will destroy the unorganized sector and create a huge negative impact on small and medium businesses, especially in rural India. He has eventually been proved correct.

He was consistent in his stand on the need to manage Covid. He first predicted that the country needs to invest in vaccines and not relax after the first wave. His stand was vindicated when the second wave hit India and created havoc.

Rahul predicted that economic growth needs to be sustained with the impetus on small and medium businesses instead of big companies. Once again he was proved right with India grappling with the highest unemployment rate in its history – all a result of the myopic, self-serving, corrupt, and venal policies of the Modi Government.

Rahul Gandhi has been mocked, caricatured, maligned, and persecuted. An entire industry has been used to create fake videos to spread slander about him. Yet he has marched on persistent and determined to fight for the common man and do what he knows is right for the country.

He undertook the Bharat Jodo yatra in the most difficult of times. Despite suffering from a terrible knee issue, he continued his march. His schedule was achingly tough and strictly regimented, yet he carried on like a true soldier and a selfless brave heart. He completed the exercise of walking from south to north to unite the people and spread the message of love, peace, and unity.

I had the honor and the privilege to be a part of the historic yatra. The love, the adoration, and the respect he received from the men, women, and children were seen to be believed. He seemed to touch a chord wherever he went and to whomever he reached out. And this response was pure, pristine, and straight from the heart. It was not stage-managed and sponsored like the rallies we see by the political leaders of the ruling party.

The thumping success of Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ has proved that the people connect matters more than anything else. The Yatra was the catalyst that led to the resounding win of Congress over the party of hate mongers.

He has always epitomized the virtues of dignity and grace. When he was removed as an MP on trumped-up charges and made to vacate his bungalow, he responded with poise and pride.

He is one of the greatest leaders of the modern era who has set an example both in public and private life which is truly worthy of emulation. He has carried the legacy of his great family and stood like a lodestar guiding people in the toughest of times.

Let us rally behind this visionary leader and support him in his mission to fight the forces of hatred and once again usher in an era of growth and harmony. Let us pledge to make Rahul the beacon light who will take our country from hatred to love, violence to peace, and darkness to light…..
