That “Big Project” Feeling—So, What’s Actually Headed Your Way?

You’re driving home, minding your own business, then you spot a fancy new sign near an empty lot: “Future Site of XXX Power Plant.” Next thing you know, everyone’s chatting about it at the coffee shop, and maybe you’ve got a few questions yourself. What’s involved? Is it good? Is it concerning? Let’s talk through what actually matters when a power plant is headed to your area, minus all the jargon and panic.

The Basics: What Kind of Plant Are We Talking About, Anyway?

First up, there are a whole bunch of different kinds of power plants: natural gas, solar, wind, nuclear, hydro—you get the idea. It’s smart to find out which type is planned for your location, since each one works differently and brings its own quirks. Solar or wind? Expect a lot of panels (or big turbines) and a pretty small carbon footprint. A new gas plant? That means smokestacks, more trucks, and—at some point—a bit more scrutiny on air quality.

But no matter what kind, every plant has a few things in common: security fences, new access roads, and suddenly, a lot more brightly colored vests on your daily drive.

What’s Actually Going to Happen During Construction?

If you’ve never watched a big plant get built, here’s the deal. Months—sometimes years—of trucks, cranes, bulldozers, and construction crews rumble into town. You’ll hear the noise, especially early on. The traffic ramps up, mainly on weekdays. And construction sites are, well, a bit ugly before they start shaping up. Dust, bright lights at night, strange beeping sounds—it’ll all become familiar for a while.

The developers will also be working on something called the Electrical Balance of Plant (EBoP). That’s a mouthful, but it’s just the bundle of electrical systems that connect the main power-making parts to everything else so the plant actually works. It covers the wiring, switchgear, transformers, even backup generators—pretty much everything that keeps the plant humming and makes sure the electricity gets to the grid (and ultimately, to you).

How Will This Affect My Day-to-Day?

Let’s be honest—change isn’t always comfy. There’s the short-term hassle: construction noise, blocked roads, and maybe a little extra dust in the air. On the flip side, there’s usually a positive pop for local jobs, contracts for local suppliers, and the long-term promise of better electricity reliability or even lower prices (depending on the plant).

Some folks worry about health impacts, especially if it’s a fossil-fuel plant. It’s always worth asking city officials about environmental studies, air quality plans, and how they’ll handle safety concerns. If you’re curious—or skeptical—show up to a public meeting. This is exactly the place to ask questions and steer things in a direction that works for you and your neighbors.

What’s Going to Happen When It’s Finished?

Once construction wraps, life gets quieter, and the plant does its thing mostly in the background. Past the fences and humming substations, power is flowing, and your local energy grid is more robust. If it’s a renewable plant, that usually means a green boost for the neighborhood. Plus, new plants often chip in for community programs or upgrades (think park benches or sports fields).

Staying in the Loop

Bottom line: A new power plant can mean short-term mess and long-term perks (or, at least, more reliable lights on during thunderstorms). Keep an open mind, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to get your voice heard. And hey, you might walk away with some pretty interesting stories for the next block party!

GHAZIABAD: Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) marked Environment Week 2025 with a series of sustainability-focused activities across its nationwide network, beginning 5th June (World Environment Day). The initiative aimed at raising environmental awareness and encouraging responsible practices culminated in a special event at Hindon Honda, Ghaziabad, in the presence of HMSI’s senior leadership, including Sheshank Razdan, General Manager, Regional Business Centraland Ravikumar Annasaheb Firagannavar, General Manager, Regional Business Central-Customer Service.

This year’s World Environment Day theme, ‘Beat Plastic Pollution,’ shaped the direction of the on-ground activities. As part of the week-long celebration, HMSI’s dealerships and service outlets across India actively engaged with customers and local communities. Key activities included the distribution of saplings to all customers visiting at dealership, awareness campaigns on the harmful impact of plastic pollution, and 1,25,000 tree plantation drives across multiple cities and towns. Free Pollution Under Control (PUC) check-up camps were also conducted to promote cleaner and more efficient vehicle usage.

In its 25th year of operations in India, HMSI has reached a significant production milestone, crossing 70 million units of cumulative production since the start of local manufacturing in 2001. This milestone contributes to Honda’s achievement of cumulative global production of motorcycles, which has reached 500 million units since 1949. As the production scales, HMSI remains aligned with Honda’s global vision of realising zero environmental impact not only with its products, but throughout the entire product lifecycle, including all corporate activities, through its Triple Action to ZERO initiative focusing on carbon neutrality, clean energy, and resource circulation. The company continues to strengthen operational efficiencies while promoting cleaner technologies and manufacturing processes across its facilities. The Environment Week initiative highlights the role of collective participation- from customers and dealers to employees and leadership- in shaping a cleaner, greener tomorrow.

These efforts were designed to create grassroot impact, reinforcing the message that even small, everyday actions can contribute meaningfully to environmental health. The event brought together HMSI associates and local representatives for a tree plantation drive and an employee awareness session which focussed on integrating sustainability into workplace and community practices.

In parallel to these on-ground efforts, HMSI continues to integrate sustainability into its operations. The company’s third factory in Narsapura, Karnataka, currently meets 98% of its energy requirements through renewable sources. Across all manufacturing locations, HMSI is expanding its capability to source over half of its total energy needs from renewable inputs.

To reduce dependency on freshwater sources and promote long-term environmental resilience, HMSI continues its journey toward water conservation by adopting advanced rainwater harvesting techniques at all its factories. The Third factory at Narsapura (Bangalore) meets its maximum water requirements through rainwater alone. All four manufacturing plants operate as Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) facilities.

All HMSI plants have been awarded the prestigious GreenCo World Class rating, achieving Platinum and Platinum plus levels. The company has also received several national accolades, including the National Energy and Water Awards, in recognition of its unwavering commitment to sustainability.

With both on-ground and long-term investments in clean manufacturing, HMSI’s celebration highlights a broader approach to supporting a sustainable future through awareness, action, and innovation.

A Strategic Move to Optimise Production and Accelerate Business Amid Global Challenges

Well-Established Indian Operations Will Support Indonesian Plant Through CKD Kits

CHENNAI: Daimler Truck today marked a significant milestone in its regional expansion with the opening of Daimler Commercial Vehicles Manufacturing Indonesia (DCVMI)—a cutting-edge greenfield manufacturing facility located in the Cikarang Industrial Area, Indonesia. This strategic investment underscores Daimler Truck’s long-term commitment to Southeast Asia, which is tailored to meet the region’s dynamic and evolving mobility needs.

The new DCVMI plant spans 15 hectares and has an annual production capacity of 5,000 Mercedes-Benz trucks and buses. With a total investment of IDR 500 billion, this facility embodies Daimler Truck’s commitment towards strengthening the commercial vehicle industry in Indonesia and serves as a cornerstone of the company’s regional growth strategy, acting as a hub for vehicle assembly and distribution across key Southeast Asian markets. What sets this initiative apart is its collaborative foundation, rooted in the precision of German engineering, the strength of Indian manufacturing, and the insight of Indonesian market experience.

India plays a pivotal role in this regional synergy. The new Indonesian facility will be seamlessly supported by Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), based in Chennai, which will supply high-quality Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits. DICV’s proven excellence in cost-efficient, world-class manufacturing ensures operational efficiency and supply chain resilience, while optimizing localisation and scalability.

Satyakam Arya, Managing Director and CEO, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles, emphasized the plant’s significance as part of Daimler Truck’s long-term strategy in Southeast Asia. “India remains a cornerstone of our global export strategy. Leveraging Indonesia for the ASEAN region is about expanding our reach, not shifting our focus. As DICV becomes further integrated into Daimler Trucks’ global manufacturing network, we will play a key role in building capabilities in Indonesia—transferring knowledge, developing talent, and strengthening the regional ecosystem.”

The opening of DCVMI’s new factory is a concrete realisation of the “Bigger and Better” vision. More than just expanding the scale of its facilities, this step also brings improvements in agility, improved workflow, and the resilience of solutions for customers in Indonesia. This initiative affirms the company’s commitment to providing commercial vehicles that truly meet local market needs, from production efficiency and service reliability to the ongoing adoption of innovation. The collaboration between Daimler’s global technology and the strength of the local Indonesian team serves as a solid foundation, ensuring that every product supports the business growth of customers throughout Indonesia.

“The integration of India’s advanced manufacturing capabilities into our Southeast Asian operations highlights our unified global approach,” Satyakam said. “By combining German engineering excellence with India’s production strength and deep Indonesian market understanding, we are creating a robust platform for long-term success in the region,” he added.

The plant will continue producing flagship models such as the Mercedes-Benz Axor Trucks: 2528 CH, 4928 T, 4028 T, 4023 T, 2528 RMC, 2528 CX, and 2528 C, as well as Mercedes-Benz bus chassis: OH 1626 L and OH 1626 S, specifically designed for the Indonesian market.

Sankaranarayanan Ramamurthi, President Director of DCVMI, stated that the inauguration of the plant marks a new growth phase for DCVMI in Indonesia. “This plant is not merely an addition to our infrastructure—it is a manifestation of our vision to make a tangible contribution to Indonesia’s economy, empower local communities, and build a stronger industrial ecosystem. Each unit produced here reflects not only engineering excellence but also the spirit of collaboration and our confidence in Indonesia’s future. We are committed to continually creating job opportunities, innovating, and contributing to growth in and for Indonesia,” he explained.

DCVMI’s new plant in Cikarang adopts an integrated manufacturing system under one roof, enabling more efficient and streamlined production processes. It is equipped with a test track to simulate various road conditions and an advanced paint booth to enhance paint quality, all aligned with Mercedes-Benz’s global manufacturing standards.

This tri-nation collaboration not only strengthens Daimler Truck’s footprint in Asia but also enables faster innovation cycles, increased flexibility, and a sharper customer focus—delivering vehicles that meet local demands with global standards of quality and performance.

Novotel’s New Seafood Principles and Plant-Forward Ambition for World Ocean Day

PARIS: Ahead of World Ocean Day (8 June), Novotel proudly marks the first anniversary of its transformative three-year partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), reaffirming its commitment to protecting the wellbeing and longevity of the ocean with the launch of two new food policies: Novotel’s Sustainable Seafood Principles in partnership with WWF France and the launch of a pioneering global Plant-Forward food ambition across 600 hotels.

“At Novotel, we are taking decisive action to protect our oceans, and the partnership with WWF is a driving force of this commitment,” said Jean-Yves Minet, Novotel Global Brand President. “Through their guidance and expertise, we can drive change at scale across our 600 hotels and more widely across the industry and communities we reach. At Novotel, we’re committed to making it easier to make choices that have a positive impact on the longevity of the planet, on marine life, and future generations. From responsible sourcing to a Plant-Forward approach, our ocean impact strategy is designed to drive real change. Together, we can lead the way toward a healthier, more sustainable future – one positive choice at a time.”

DELICIOUS, HEALTHIER, MORE SUSTAINABLE FOOD

The new Sustainable Seafood Principles were created in partnership with WWF and led by the fisheries experts at WWF France. The new guidelines, launched globally across Novotel’s 600 hotels, include banning 350 species of endangered seafood, promoting responsible fishing by 2027, serving only MSC-certified wild-caught species or responsibly sourced local fish, and using ASC- or organic-certified farmed seafood for salmon and shrimp, fostering supplier collaboration where needed. WWF France has created Sustainable Seafood Training, a comprehensive global training programme for Novotel chefs, food and procurement teams, and is working alongside Novotel and Accor to improve traceability.

Furthermore, Novotel has pioneered a Plant-Forward1 ambition, targeting all its 600 hotels to have a minimum of 25% plant-based menus by 2026. Today 39% of hotels dedicate at least 25% of their menus to plant-forward options. Novotel is committed to offering market leading, tasty, sustainable, and Plant-Forward philosophy at scale, guided by a leading culinary institute.

EDUCATION & AWARENESS FOR THE NEXT GENERATION

Novotel welcomes more than two million family stays a year, and this summer, families at Novotel will experience two new edutainment games designed by WWF France and Novotel to inspire and empower children to be ambassadors for the ocean. “Guardians of the Mediterranean” is an interactive card and digital game inspired by the WWF Blue Panda boat, created to educate families about ocean conservation in a fun, engaging way. “Sea Turtle” is a lively digital quiz that helps children learn about the threats faced during turtle migration, including ghost gear, plastic, and pollution.

“Inspiring and educating the next generation is key to protecting our ocean,” added Jean-Yves. “By engaging young minds through play, we plant the seeds of awareness, empathy, and action for a healthier, more sustainable marine future. As a leading family-friendly hotel brand, Novotel is perfectly placed to champion this vital mission.”

Where: Europe

Why: Per hectare, the Posidonia meadow sequesters five to seven times more carbon than the tropical forest

Status: Action plans underway in 9 coastal cities; 8 mooring fields in the project; and 73 buoy conversions completed in 2024 and 41 planned in 2025.

2/ The identification and removal of “ghost gear”

Where: Mediterranean Sea

Why: Lost, abandoned, and otherwise discarded fishing gear is a major threat to marine life

Status: Over 1,000 hectares prospected in Bonifacio; several nets identified; pilot retrieval with underwater robots scheduled for 2025–2026; new prospection missions in Calanques and Ajaccio planned.

3/ Supporting WWF France’s Blue Panda boat

Where: Europe – France, Greece, Türkiye, Italy, and Croatia

PUNE: In a city where the winter mornings bring misty skies and a growing awareness of environmental challenges, Cybage has taken a bold step toward sustainability. The leading product engineering services company has inaugurated a state-of-the-art water bottling plant at its Pune campus, proving that small steps can lead to monumental change.

This cutting-edge facility is a significant move to curb plastic waste and support the city’s environment. By eliminating the use of over 80,000 plastic bottles annually, Cybage is setting an example for how businesses can contribute to a greener Pune. The plant will provide clean, safe, and refreshing water to employees and visitors while reducing dependency on single-use plastics—a key contributor to pollution.

The initiative comes at a critical time. As Pune grapples with foggy, polluted mornings, Cybage’s effort is a breath of fresh air. Plastic waste not only clogs landfills but also impacts the air quality that Punekars cherish. By reducing plastic use, Cybage’s plant helps conserve resources, protect our oceans, and mitigate the effects of climate change—all while promoting a healthier lifestyle.

“Pune has always been known for its progressive mindset and green initiatives,” said Ritu Nathani, Head of Cybage Foundation & Board of Directors. “This plant reflects our commitment to a better future, and we hope it inspires other organizations and individuals to think sustainably. Every small action can make a big impact when it comes to saving our environment.”

Cybage urges businesses, institutions, and Punekars at large to come forward with similar eco-friendly initiatives. The road to a greener future begins with simple yet powerful actions. Imagine a city where every bottle saved contributes to clearer skies and cleaner air for everyone—from the bustling streets of Deccan to the tranquil hills of Parvati.

As Punekars, it’s time to unite for a cause greater than ourselves. Let’s take a cue from Cybage and reimagine the possibilities. Whether it’s reducing plastic use, conserving energy, or supporting sustainable practices, every effort counts. After all, the environment isn’t just a global responsibility—it’s a local one, too.

Join the movement. Start small. Think big. Because Pune deserves a future as clear as its vision.

TALOJA: Bonlon Industries Limited, a company listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and known for manufacturing copper wire, is now undertaking a project for the production of aluminum rods and ingots. The company is setting up its new, modern aluminum plant in MIDC Taloja, Maharashtra. The plant is expected to commence operations with an annual production capacity of 75 thousand tons. The plant will produce rods, wires, and ingots from aluminum scrap, catering to the growing demand in various sectors.

Plans to Start Construction Soon: According to a senior official of the company, the site for the new aluminum plant has been finalized in Taloja, and construction work will commence soon. The plan is to start production at the new plant from the financial year 2024-25. The new plant is expected to contribute an annual revenue of 200 to 250 crores to the company, with a profit margin of 4 to 5 percent. Bonlon Industries, promoted by the Arun Kumar Jain family, is a 25-year-old company primarily engaged in the manufacture of copper wire and rods. The promoter group holds a 64 percent stake in Bonlon.

Business Quadrupled: Bonlon Industries, a part of the Bonlon Group, is involved not only in the production of copper wire but also in the trading of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, hotel business, and civil construction. Due to the increasing demand for copper wire and rods in various industries, the company’s business has quadrupled from 135 crores to approximately 511 crores in the last three years. However, fluctuating copper prices and higher trading income have impacted profit margins. To enhance profitability, the company is now focusing on manufacturing.

The company aims to achieve a business turnover of 680 crores and a net profit of 10 crores in the upcoming financial year.

PUNE: Humans have always been fascinated by natural greenery. A perfect example of this is the garden around the house. With increasing urbanization, bungalows were replaced by flats and gardens by terrace gardens. These terrace gardens inside the house often wither away due to the lack of necessary and timely maintenance. As a solution to this, Biophilia, the garden center on Karve Road, has launched a unique ‘Plant Truck’ concept to deliver all the services required for a home or a terrace garden. This was announced by Anuradha Barpande, Co-founder of Biophilia during a Press Conference held in the city today. Durga Dharmadhikari and Ajay Bokil were present on this occasion.

Elaborating on this, Anuradha Barpande said, “Although services like Plant Trucks are widely available in the US, they do not seem to have taken off in India. Our attempt to provide home or terrace garden services through a Plant Truck is probably the first such example in our country.”

For the past few months, the greenery inside the new airport in Bengaluru has become a topic of discussion around the world. Recently famous actor and newly appointed director of FTII – Pune, R. Madhavan was also fascinated by this greenery and praised it through a post on Instagram. Pune’ Anuradha Barpande and her husband Pradeep Barpande are the ones behind the creation of this beautiful vertical garden spread over an area of more than 55,000 square feet inside the Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru.

“Our Plant Truck offers a wide variety of plants, beautifully designed pots, accessories for indoor natural greenery, essential organic fertilizers, other essentials/tools for indoor and terrace gardening, innovative vertical greenery options, and skilled manpower to keep your home or terrace garden always blooming and green“, added Barpande.

Barpande mentioned that ‘Plant Truck’ is a promising step that has been taken to create a relationship between citizens and the small but sustainable greenery at home, with the reasons to enjoy being in the company of nature and to keep the surrounding environment pleasant and happy.

Giving more information about this, Durga Dharmadhikari said, “Biophilia and the plants available in our Plant Truck are developed in our own nursery at Varve or near Khed Shivapur, and so we are able to maintain its quality and standard. Biophilia’s founders have over 33 years of experience in the gardening segment and with the help of this massive experience we have been able to create a unique ‘Potting Mix’ by adding various components to a naturally occurring biomass ‘Peat Moss’ by adding some required elements. This not only helps to control the PH value of the plants, retain water for a longer period, keep insects and mosquitoes away but also helps to simplify the maintenance process of the plants planted in the home garden.”

“We intend to spread awareness about Home Gardening through this Plant Truck. Some workshops will also be organized by taking this Truck to the big house societies“, she informed.

Ecogreen Landscape Technologies is the parent company of Biophilia founded by Anuradha and Pradeep Barpande. It is the leading company in the country for innovative greeneries developing Green Walls, Green Roofs, and Urban Farming as per the requirements of clients. The organization has been functioning since 1987 and is mainly operational in areas like technical implementation, maintenance, transplanting of large trees, soil erosion control, bulk supply of saplings, and landscape maintenance. Anuradha Barpande is an expert in microbiology and Pradeep Barpande has a special interest in gardening and nursery. All the ELT India Green Wall systems are innovative, proprietary, and protected by intellectual property applications including designs, patents, and trademarks. Earlier, Green Walls were either imported from abroad or developed in India using foreign technology.

World’s largest man-made Vertical Garden at the Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru which is spread over an area of 55,000 square feet was designed and developed by the Barpande couple. Realizing that it would be a challenging task to maintain each of these trees, the Barpande couple has developed a method of watering and drainage of the water system by using sensor-based technology. Moreover, the massive indoor greenery which consists of a lot of Bells and Veils of big size has been designed in such a way that its care and maintenance becomes easier.
