*Expert-led personalised healthcare from hospital to home

CHENNAI: Apollo Hospitals, India’s most trusted name in healthcare, has announced the launch of ‘The Apollo Elder Care Program’, a comprehensive, expert-led initiative aimed at transforming the healthcare experience for senior citizens. This holistic geriatric program is designed to offer cohesive and personalised care that addresses the evolving medical needs of older adults, from preventive health assessments to post-procedure recovery, both at the hospital and at home.

India’s ageing population faces complex health challenges, often requiring the involvement of multiple specialists, regular monitoring, and coordinated care. ‘The Apollo Elder Care Program’ bridges these gaps by offering a single, well-coordinated service under the guidance of a dedicated senior geriatric consultant.

Dr. Priyanka Rana Patgiri, Consultant Geriatrics, Apollo Hospitals, said, “Aging should not mean struggling to manage multiple medical conditions. With the ‘Apollo Elder Care Program’, we ensure every senior has a trusted doctor to oversee and coordinate their entire care journey. Our patients receive continuous, compassionate, and coordinated care at home or in our hospital. This is dignity in aging—redefined.”

The program offers a consolidated model of care that includes a senior geriatric consultant who oversees all medical needs, coordinates with super specialists, and creates a unified care plan tailored to each individual. High-quality health evaluations are available both at Apollo’s geriatric outpatient clinics and through home visits for patients who may have mobility challenges. Patients under the program receive priority access to Apollo’s panel of expert super specialists, with faster appointments and team-based treatment planning.

The program further supports every stage of care, from prevention and diagnostics to hospital procedures, recovery, and rehabilitation. It also equips families and caregivers with guidance, 24/7 access to medical advice, and digital tools to monitor health between visits. This initiative not only simplifies the healthcare journey for seniors but also ensures their dignity and comfort remain at the forefront of treatment delivery.

Apollo Hospitals continues to set benchmarks in patient-centric innovation, and the Elder Care Program reinforces its commitment to addressing the unique needs of India’s senior population with empathy, expertise, and excellence.

The program was recognized for its transformative efforts in restoring livelihoods, boosting incomes, and fostering self-reliance in rural Jharkhand, Telangana, and Maharashtra in partnership with Watershed Organization Trust

HYDERABAD: Axis Bank Foundation (ABF) has been awarded the prestigious gold award at FICCI’s 4th Sustainable Agriculture Summit and Awards 2024. The Sustainable Livelihood Programme was recognized under the Natural Resource Management and Climate Resilient Agriculture category, for best practices and innovations in climate-resilient, smart agriculture, and sustainable management of natural resources. Under the program, ABF supported Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR) which has capacitated rural communities across Khunti district in Jharkhand, Narayanpet district in Telangana, and Ahmednagar and Beed districts in Maharashtra to participate in watershed development work to improve water availability, adopt low-risk sustainable agricultural practices for improvement in crop yield, and strengthen local community institutions to take the development agenda forward.

The multiple key initiatives implemented under this project have led to its scalable impact in the region:

Enhanced Irrigation Access: Improved irrigation access for farmers in Telangana and Jharkhand.

Increased Income: Material increase in annual income due to improved irrigation and agriculture practices.

Diversified Agriculture: Cultivation of fruit and agroforestry trees, development of kitchen gardening, and multi-layer farming.

Institutional Strengthening: Establishment of local institutions such as VDCs, FIGs, FPOs, and SHGs, leveraging resources from MGNREGS for infrastructure.

Climate-Resilient Practices: Adoption of climate-resilient practices by over 8,920 farmers, enhancing productivity and soil health, while reducing costs and inorganic fertilizer use.

Non-Farm Livelihood Development: Supporting households in constructing and repairing animal sheds, purchasing livestock, and providing marketing support for pig rearing in convergence with government schemes and programs.

India’s diverse landscape, varied agro-climatic zones, and rich natural resources present significant challenges for community sustenance, natural resource management (NRM), and rural livelihoods. The target communities in Telangana, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra face severe issues such as water scarcity and natural resource depletion, critically impacting agriculture and allied livelihoods. These regions are home to economically disadvantaged rural populations, including tribal groups and landless families, who are highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. They face increased production losses, higher input costs, and reduced incomes. The program addresses these challenges through targeted interventions across the impacted areas.

Dhruvi Shah, Executive Trustee and Chief Executive Officer of Axis Bank Foundation commented on the award, “Our Sustainable Livelihood Programme delves into a nuanced approach to livelihood challenges while focused on the local context. FICCI’s 4th Sustainable Agriculture Summit and Awards 2024 is a recognition of our efforts and a great motivator. It reinforces our commitment to the need for self-reliance among rural communities. This recognition strengthens our determination to drive with our approach and inspires us to build a legacy of positive change for years to come.”

Training and capacity-building of Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) and ‘Jalsevaks’, stakeholder engagement workshops, and watershed development have been key to the program’s success. These efforts have strengthened Village Watershed and Water Management Committees, facilitated exposure visits to successful projects, and promoted collaborative workshops with government departments. Land treatment measures, afforestation, water resource development, and water-saving technologies have been implemented to enhance resilience. Training sessions for VDCs, SHGs, and farmer groups focus on planning, management, monitoring, and sustainable livelihoods. ‘Jalsevak’ and para-agronomist training enhances project implementation at the village level.

Prakash Keskar, Executive Director, WOTR, shared his thoughts on the recognition, “This recognition from FICCI validates the core idea that when communities are equipped to manage their resources, development follows naturally. Through the Sustainable Livelihood Programme, we are not just addressing immediate challenges; we are laying the foundation for sustainable futures. This acknowledgment inspires us to amplify our efforts and drive even greater impact in the lives of vulnerable communities.”

The program has significantly impacted rural communities by enhancing water availability, promoting climate-resilient strategies, and increasing income through sustainable agriculture practices. Key outcomes include improved market linkages, increased access to irrigation, crop diversification, enhanced food and nutritional security, and strengthened institutions. The FarmPrecise mobile app has further supported farmers by providing weather and agro-advisories, helping plan activities and manage pests, thus increasing productivity and reducing climate-related risks. Moving forward, the program aims to empower people and institutions for sustained impact.

PUNE: The Parimal and Pramod Chaudhari Foundation (PPCF) on Saturday organized ‘Utkarsh Sammelam’ at MES Auditorium, Kothrud. The program was organized to take a review fellowship initiative started by PPCF to support student education. Chief Guest Dr.Sanjay Runwal, Management Expert and Business Strategist, Mr.Pramod Chaudhari Chairman of Praj Industries, and Mrs.Parimal Chaudhari, Managing Trustee of Praj Foundation were present on the occasion. The website of the Parimal and Pramod Chaudhari Foundation was unveiled at the hands of Mr.Pramod Chaudhari.

Around 15 students from high schools, junior colleges, and vocational courses who have excelled in their education during this ongoing fellowship were felicitated on the occasion. The efforts of nine institutes that have helped identify needy students were also felicitated on the occasion.

Advocating the concept of ‘DGL’ ( doing good in life ) Chief Guest Dr.Sanjay Runwal said that the work of PCCF will inspire people to do good for society. Doing something good does not only mean helping with money but with experience, expertise, exposure, education, and excellence. We all have these in some of the other forms and therefore we all can do something for our society and our nation. He added that today’s world presents a lot of opportunities for youngsters and nobody can stop them from dreaming big.

Mrs.Parimal Chaudhari said that education is the first step to success in our lives. Education presents everybody with equitable opportunities. This opportunity should be available to all and we should all work towards this.

The fellowship program is in its fourth year and has been started by PCCF to support students who are passionate about education but could not qualify for traditional scholarships. While highly meritorious students receive standard scholarships, the PPCF Fellowship provides financial support to students who have the capacity and intent for further education and have scored 50% or more in their last examination. The aim is to enable them to become self-reliant at the earliest and start contributing to their family’s financial well-being.

Since 2021, PPCF has been granting Fellowships to students from schools, colleges, and vocational training institutes, within around a 100-kilometer radius of Pune. Eligible students undergo a selection process based on predefined criteria. In addition, a home visit is conducted to assess and verify the student’s family and financial background. PPCF covers the entire educational cost for selected students which allows them to focus on their studies without being worried about finances.

The review of the program at the Utkarsh Sammelan revealed that 2593 students from 125 institutes have benefited, of which approximately 60% of students are female. 728 students received the Fellowship for vocational training, and 111 have completed their course are employed, and have started supporting their families. Their achievement is a testament to the PPCF’s impactful work.

MUMBAI: The PepsiCo Foundation, in collaboration with PepsiCo R&D and Quaker, has released the ‘Building A Healthier Tomorrow’ report at an event in Mumbai, highlighting the success of the Quaker ‘Bowl of Growth’ program. Launched in 2023 with NGO MAMTA HIMC, the initiative aims to uplift community health by supporting 1,000 malnourished children aged 3-5 in Mawal & Mulshi Blocks, Pune District, Maharashtra.

The program places the mother and child at the heart of its interventions. It has empowered parents and caregivers with knowledge and resources to provide balanced nutrition to children. A key focus of the program is to intervene during the early stages of malnutrition to prevent its progression to severe forms, ensuring a healthier future for children.

Aligned with PepsiCo’s principle of ‘Partnership of Progress’, the Quaker ‘Bowl of Growth’ program strategically partnered with the Government of Maharashtra to ensure the scalability and sustainability of nutrition interventions. Building on the success of the first phase, Quaker will continue the program in Pune, reaching an additional 2,000 children, with further expansion plans for Mumbai, aiming to benefit 4,000 children.

The event witnessed participation from Shri Kailash Pagare, Commissioner, ICDS, Government of Maharashtra; Dr. Muralidhar P.
Congratulating PepsiCo India, Shri Kailash Pagare, Commissioner, ICDS, Government of Maharashtra said, “The improvement in children’s nutritional health by the methodology of education, awareness and supplementation of nutrition is truly encouraging. These achievements highlight the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration in addressing malnutrition. The Government of Maharashtra fully supports and appreciates such initiatives as it aligns with our state’s vision for a healthier future.”

Dr. Bhushan Gagrani (IAS), Municipal Commissioner, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in his video message about the program, praised PepsiCo India for its dedication and commitment in launching the impactful ‘Bowl of Growth program in Pune, which aligns seamlessly with the state government’s efforts to eradicate malnutrition. He emphasized that the success of this initiative underscores the strength of public-private partnerships and stressed the importance of scaling this program to reach more children across Maharashtra.

C.D. Glin, President of the PepsiCo Foundation and Global Head of Philanthropy for PepsiCo, commented on the significance of the program, “At the PepsiCo Foundation, we combat food insecurity through initiatives like meal delivery, supporting food banks, and regenerative farming. Malnutrition is a global issue, and proactive intervention is crucial to address the unique challenges faced in different regions. The Quaker ‘Bowl of Growth report highlights our commitment to improving childhood nutrition, showing significant gains in nutritional intake and knowledge. Our partnership with MAMTA HIMC has positively impacted community health in Pune, Maharashtra. Additionally, the support received from the local administration at every step over the last year has been instrumental in the implementation of the program. By addressing food insecurity at a local level, we aim to help create sustainable and long-lasting change in the communities we serve.”

Dr. Pietro Antonio Tataranni, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President, Life Sciences, PepsiCo added, “Through our pep+ (PepsiCo Positive) commitment, we are dedicated to offering positive choices that benefit people and our planet. Additionally, 95.6% of mothers & caregivers reported an increase in their children’s appetite. These numbers are a testament to the dedication and hard work of our teams over the past year. It’s heartening to see that the enrolled children loved the panjiri, with nearly every child consistently consuming at least three-quarters of the provided recipe.”

Sravani Babu, Category Lead, Brand Quaker, PepsiCo India said, “At Quaker, our 145-year commitment to nutrition is embodied in the ‘Bowl of Growth’ program. The ‘Building A Healthier Tomorrow’ report highlights significant improvements in children’s nutritional intake and awareness among mothers and caregivers. The positive response to Quaker’s nutrient-rich panjiri recipe has been particularly inspiring. Through our partnership with MAMTA HIMC, we have made a substantial impact on community health in Maharashtra. Aligned with PepsiCo’s principle of Partnership of Progress, this program marks an important first step, with its expansion now reaching Mumbai.”

Dr. Sunil Mehra, Executive Director, MAMTA HIMC commented, “We are delighted to partner with PepsiCo Foundation and PepsiCo R&D for the Quaker ‘Bowl of Growth’ program. With a strong focus on both mothers and children, the sessions conducted for parents and caregivers have empowered them to become strong advocates for the program. Their support has played a significant role in achieving the positive results we are witnessing among children, mothers, and the community. We aim to continue our efforts with a focus on community involvement, sustainable practices, and strategic partnerships, aiming to replicate this success across various regions.”

Key Interventions of the Quaker ‘Bowl of Growth’ Program:

Nutrition: Developed a local recipe ‘panjiri’, made with a specialized Quaker multigrain & millets -a based product with 18 vitamins & minerals.

Awareness: Conducted thematic engagement sessions and released a program video on the importance of nutrition and millet.

Education: Hosted daily workshops and introduced an illustrated comic book emphasizing balanced nutrition.

Quaker’s ‘Bowl of Growth’ initiative aligns with PepsiCo’s pep+ (PepsiCo Positive) ambition and ‘Food for Good’ efforts, aiming to provide nutritious food to 50 million people by 2030.

The report launch was complemented by ‘Fuel the Future,’ an educational initiative aimed at empowering community members. Through this national competition, Quaker, a brand that stands for nutrition, aims to empower students of India’s Nutrition and Allied Science College to be the changemakers, drive awareness, and educate communities about malnutrition.

SOUTH AFRICA: The 2024 edition of the nationwide grassroots, Get Into Rugby (GIR) programme targeted at children aged six to 13 is officially underway and heads to the Free State province on Thursday, 18 July.

A festival event, two days before the world champions’ Test Match against Portugal in Bloemfontein, will take place to officially mark the return of the Engen-sponsored Get Into Rugby season.

The grassroots rugby initiative saw 244 788 boys and girls play the game across all nine provinces of the country in 2023, touching the lives of 114 281 boys and 130 507 girls, who might previously have never experienced organized sport, let alone rugby.

The program also offers young, aspirant rugby coaches, both male and female, an opportunity to develop their rugby coaching skills – a key aspect that aligns with Engen Sports’ values of creating a holistic platform for youth sport development.

Engen Brand & Sponsorship Manager, Tsholo Tiro, said that Engen was looking forward to another season of impacting and contributing to the growth of rugby in South Africa through the programme.

“The Engen Get Into Rugby program is quite important to Engen due to its unique ability to reach children at the grassroots level,” said Tiro.

“Over the years, sport has proven to be a fundamental aspect of the growth of children. As proud sponsors of this program, Engen takes pride in contributing to a unique platform that encourages not only sport development, but the holistic development of the children to ensure that rugby and society benefit from well-groomed future rugby players.”

The festival in Bloemfontein will be visited by Springbok players to add inspiration and impetus to the young players, while Rian Oberholzer, CEO of SA Rugby emphasized the importance of providing new experiences and opportunities to young people.

“The Get Into Rugby program has successfully introduced hundreds of thousands of children to rugby and sport over the many years and we’re grateful for Engen’s continued support,” said Oberholzer.

“This program is the first rung on a ladder that leads to our men’s and women’s Springbok teams. But, as much as that, it offers an opportunity to play organized sport for many children who would not ever have the chance to experience it.”
