By: Dr. Priyanka Kuri, Consultant – Dermatology, Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru

Too much of a good thing—like protein—can damage your hair. Here’s a clear breakdown of protein overload, its causes, effects, and how to manage it. Protein overload happens when hair absorbs excessive protein from hair products. This makes the hair stiff, brittle, and prone to breakage. The issue arises when there’s an imbalance between protein and moisture, usually from overusing protein treatments without adding enough hydration.

Can Protein Overload Cause Hair Loss?

Protein overload can lead to breakage, which may look like hair loss. Hair becomes rigid and snaps easily, giving the impression of thinning or excessive shedding. However, protein overload does not harm hair follicles or cause permanent hair loss. With the right moisture balance, the damage can be reversed.

Protein Overload in hair in caused by:

Overuse of Protein-Based Products – Regular keratin treatments, protein masks, or conditioners with ingredients like hydrolyzed keratin or silk protein can result in buildup and hair stiffness.

Lack of Moisture – When protein treatments are used without adequate moisturizing products, hair becomes dry and difficult to manage.

Frequent Use of Leave-In Protein Treatments – Leave-in products that contain protein too often can cause buildup, as these products remain on the hair longer than rinse-out treatments.

Hard Water Buildup – Minerals in hard water, such as calcium and magnesium, can interact with protein products and create a film on the hair, reducing flexibility.

Low Porosity Hair – Hair with low porosity tends to repel moisture and product absorption. Protein-based products may sit on the hair rather than penetrate, leading to dryness and brittleness.

How to Treat Protein Overload?

Stop using protein-based products to allow your hair to recover. Switch to moisturizing shampoos, conditioners, and leave-in treatments with ingredients like aloe vera or glycerin. Use a mild sulfate-free or chelating shampoo to remove buildup. Add light oils like argan or jojoba to restore softness. For low porosity hair, applying heat while deep conditioning can help moisture penetrate more effectively.

Maintain a balance between protein and moisture in your hair care routine. Avoid frequent use of protein treatments, especially if you have low porosity hair. Use moisturizing products regularly and clarify your hair occasionally to prevent buildup.

A handful of Almonds (around 26 units or 1 ounce) gives you 6 g of protein and 6 g of Fiber

PUNE: India continues to face a major challenge when it comes to meeting daily protein needs. While carbohydrates make up a large part of everyday meals, many people across age groups still fall short of their required protein intake. To raise awareness and offer practical solutions to this issue, the Almond Board of California hosted a panel discussion in Pune on “Addressing India’s Protein Gap: Better Nutrition for a Healthier Tomorrow.”

The event, held at Ramee Grand Hotel and Spa, Pune, brought together well-known personalities, including actress Soha Ali Khan, fitness expert Yasmin Karachiwala, and Ritika Samaddar, Regional Head – Dietetics, Max Healthcare, New Delhi. The panel focused on the importance of protein in addressing India’s nutritional gap. It highlighted the role of small dietary changes, like a handful of almonds, in improving protein intake for people across all age groups.

Protein is essential for growth, health, and strength. Children need it for overall development, teenagers for energy, and adults for muscle repair and holistic well-being. Yet, Indian diets often miss the mark. For example, a bowl of dal has about 18 grams of protein, which may not be enough for those with active lifestyles or higher nutritional requirements in the family.

The panellists emphasized that it doesn’t demand that one overhaul their entire diet to include more protein. Small dietary changes like adding almonds to meals or snacks make a big difference. Almonds are a natural, plant-based source of protein, offering about 6g of protein in a 30g serving. They also provide essential nutrients such as magnesium, vitamin E, and zinc for immunity and wellness.

Soha Ali Khan said, “When I plan meals at home, protein tops the list – especially for my daughter who’s growing and active. Almonds have been an easy and reliable source of nutrition for us. I enjoy snacking on them in between shoots. They keep me going without making me feel heavy. For my daughter, I add almonds in fun ways like mixing them into her breakfast or tossing some into her salad. It’s a small but meaningful step towards making sure we’re getting enough protein every day.”

Yasmin Karachiwala said, “As a fitness professional, I often talk to people about the importance of protein for energy, recovery, and strength. Almonds are my go-to because they offer good-quality plant-based protein, which is especially great after exercise/ post-workout. They help keep you full, which makes them a smart snack choice. I carry them with me all the time, whether I’m training clients or heading to a shoot. It’s a simple way to give your body the right nutrition.”

Ritika Samaddar said, “Many people in India unknowingly fall short of their daily protein needs. One way to fill this gap is by adding protein-rich foods like almonds to the diet. I recommend them often because they’re easy to include, especially for families. Almonds offer protein along with other nutrient requirements, and they’re far better than most packaged snacks. A handful a day goes a long way in improving nutrition.”

Organizations such as ICMR and FSSAI have also acknowledged the nutritional value of almonds. In the ‘Eat Right During COVID-19’ guidelines, almonds are recommended as a good source of plant protein, along with key nutrients such as vitamin E and magnesium. ICMR further encourages including nuts regularly as part of a balanced daily diet.

Getting enough protein isn’t complicated or expensive. Every day choices, such as snacking on almonds, may prove to be a meaningful way for families to take impactful steps toward better health for all.

Earthful, a direct-to-consumer, plant-based nutrition brand has raised a Pre-Seed investment of USD 400 Thousand from Green Ivy Ventures among others. Marquee investors such as Abhishek Goyal of Tracxn; Jayant Paleti of Darwinbox; and Brij Bhushan of Magicpin have also participated in the round.

HYDERABAD: Over the last year, Earthful, co-founded by sisters Sudha Gogineni & Veda Gogineni, has shown an exemplary 5X growth. The clean label startup has witnessed a 15% MoM growth along with building a community of health enthusiasts. Earthful products are available to consumers through its website and online marketplaces. More than 70-80% of the sales come from their website showcasing the strength of the brand love.

Earthful’s flagship product range includes 100% Plant Multivitamins, customized to the needs of Teens, Adults & Elderly, across genders. Their uniqueness lies in sourcing every single Vitamin & Mineral, from a science-backed plant source. For eg: Iron from Curry leaves and vitamin C from Amla. They are also disrupting the Protein space, with a clean, 6 ingredients only, Plant Protein powder range, with natural Indianized tastes such as Kerala Vanilla, Alphonso Mango, and Dark cocoa. They ensure the formulations are clean by avoiding unnecessary excipients, flavors, and processed sugars, and choosing natural alternatives.

Earthful was born out of a very personal need for founders, Sudha and Veda, to solve their health needs. Coming from a health-conscious family, they understood the importance of eating right and staying fit. Yet, hustling a fast-paced lifestyle they fell prey to nagging health issues such as knee pains, energy crashes, etc. They understood the problem was hidden in their nutritional deficiencies. Being unhappy with the synthetic or animal-derived choices in the market, they went on to build a Clean, Plant-based nutrition brand, Earthful.

Earthful has adopted a bold mission to fight hidden hunger in India, where we consume enough calories for our hunger but not the right amount & variety of nutrients. ~75% of Indians have a deficiency of at least one Vitamin or Mineral, leading to health concerns. Earthful aims to tackle this problem head-on with its science-backed, plant nutrition.

Commenting on the investment, Veda Gogineni, Co-Founder, Earthful said, “We are delighted to have received the investment which will help us invest in research & development, build omni-channel distribution & expand our team.”

Abhishek Goyal, Co-Founder, of Tracxn, said, “Earthful is truly rebuilding trust in nutrition products by formulating clean products with transparency. Their choice of unique plant ingredients with scientific backing is very novel.”

Sudha, a Chemical engineer from IIT Kharagpur and ISB Hyderabad alumnus, has previously worked with ITC Ltd and Uber. While her co-founder, Veda, a Biotechnologist from IIT Kharagpur, earlier worked with Deutsche Bank and Meesho. Leveraging their strong science backgrounds & working with a team of qualified doctors & scientists, Earthful Founders place the highest importance on innovation & research. They also actively create content to increase awareness about nutrition and wellness.

Highlighting the importance of quality, Sudha Gogineni, Co-Founder, of Earthful said, “We are the first consumers of every product we make and are obsessed with the quality & efficacy of our products.”

Dr. Sindhura, Director, of Green Ivy Ventures said “I’m thrilled to partner with Earthful, founded by the incredible sisters Sudha & Veda. Their mission to fight undernutrition through 100% plant-based health supplements resonates deeply with me as a Doctor & Mother.”

Earthful is disrupting the fast-growing nutraceutical market in India, pegged to reach ~$18 billion by 2025. With the rise in lifestyle diseases, the adoption of nutritional supplements has been on the rise.
