ANDHRA PRADESH: ArcelorMittal’s largest renewable energy venture, a 1GW solar and wind project located in Andhra Pradesh, southern India, has recently started providing clean electricity to AM/NS India, ArcelorMittal’s 60/40 Indian steelmaking joint venture with Nippon Steel.

The $0.7 billion project – developed, constructed and commissioned by AM Green Energy, a wholly owned ArcelorMittal subsidiary – is expected to reduce AM/NS India’s carbon emissions by 1.5 million tonnes per year, supporting AM/NS India’s target to reduce the carbon intensity of the steel it produces by 20% by 2030 (against a 2021 baseline).

The India renewables project has been developed as a hybrid project, integrating 1GW of solar and wind capacity with a third-party hydro pumped storage solution (currently under testing and scheduled for commissioning by June 2025), ensuring the project will ultimately deliver at least 250MW of round-the-clock power, critical for continuous energy production. It will provide over 20% of the existing energy requirements at AM/NS India’s steel plant in Hazira, Gujarat.

Vast in scale, the solar site is spread over 2,400 acres – enough to hold more than 1,700 FIFA-sized football fields – and the wind site is spread over 700 acres. Now fully commissioned and running at nameplate capacity, c. 1.5 million solar panels and 91 wind turbines will generate 2.5 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of power annually, equivalent to powering nearly 10 million Indian households.

Commenting, Aditya Mittal, CEO, ArcelorMittal, said: “Investing in renewable energy generation is an exciting new business area for ArcelorMittal. It provides cost-effective clean energy security for our steelmaking operations and supports our decarbonisation objectives.

“The India project is the first of our major renewables projects to be commissioned. It is a large and ambitious project that has been completed efficiently and safely in approximately 18 months, one of the fastest projects of this scale delivered in India, with clean electricity now being provided to AM/NS India. My congratulations go to everyone involved in the project. Its successful delivery demonstrates our commitment to growing our presence in India in a safe, sustainable manner.”

The India renewables project is one of several renewable energy projects ArcelorMittal is developing. In total, the Company has 2.3GW of renewable energy projects underway in India, Brazil, and Argentina.

It also forms part of ArcelorMittal’s suite of strategic growth projects, from which the Company expects to generate incremental annual EBITDA of $1.9 billion when all are complete by the end of 2027.

By establishing a key export hub and continuously investing in local capabilities, ZF plays a pivotal role in shaping India’s wind energy landscape.

Long-term strategic investments in the ZF Wind Power plant in Coimbatore are dedicated to expanding its manufacturing capacity from 9 to 12 GW per year to meet the growth envisioned for the wind market. This is coupled with the installation of a 13 MW test rig, further solidifying ZF’s position as a partner in development and validation.

Prof Dr. Peter Laier, Member of the Board of Management, ZF Group expressed his enthusiasm about this milestone, stating, “ZF Wind Power is a leading gearbox supplier in India with this plant providing gearboxes to both domestic and global customers under – Make in India for India and the World. The ZF Group’s investment in the expansion of production facilities is a testament to the long-term goals and growth potential for the region. We stay committed to the sustainability objectives, and with the expanded facilities we will be positioned to contribute significantly to achieve India’s ambition of doubling the nation’s wind power capacity by 2030.”

Akash Passey, President of ZF Group in India noted, “ We are proud to be the only plant in India that achieved this milestone. Our strategic focus on sustainability and ZF’s DNA of quality, innovation, and customer satisfaction has enabled us to maintain our leadership position in the Indian wind gearbox market. As a part of our technology and capacity expansion, we have already committed to investing INR 750 crores earlier this year during the Global Investors meet in Chennai. The expansion planned is focused on leveraging the market potential and meeting customer requirements.”

“We strive for local production that’s as close as possible to our partner’s destination. Advanced and sustainable logistics maximize our global manufacturing footprint while minimizing the ecological footprint. ZF Wind Power’s investment is our commitment to flexibility in local and global production to address the dynamic customer demand,” says Felix Henseler, CEO of ZF Wind Power. “This way we empower a sustainable future together with our partners.”

Deepak Pohekar, ED and Head ZF Wind Power plant Coimbatore mentioned, “Our Coimbatore plant is a state-of-the-art manufacturing hub spread over more than 120,000 sq. meters. Along with production its robust center for research and development actively works on global solutions. This facility also acts as one of the major service hubs for ZF Wind Power. The facility’s ability to adapt to evolving customer demands, both locally and globally, driven by the commitment of the talented team, has been instrumental in its success.”

This expansion aligns seamlessly with ZF’s broader sustainability goals and commitment to carbon neutrality by 2040. The Coimbatore plant incorporates advanced technologies and processes to minimize its environmental footprint and contribute to a greener future.

Honeywell now surpasses 50 licenses for its renewable fuel processing solutions

MUMBAI: Honeywell (Nasdaq: HON) announced that Acelen Renewables has selected its Ecofining technology to help support the efficient production of a targeted 20,000 barrels per day of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel. The fuels will be processed at Acelen’s facility in Bahia, Brazil, from a blend of inedible seed and waste oils. With this agreement, Acelen Renewables becomes the 50th site to license Honeywell’s renewable fuels technology.

Honeywell’s Ecofining process, which was developed in collaboration with Eni SpA, offers a capital- and cost-effective solution for processing waste fats, oils, and greases into renewable diesel and SAF. Blended with conventional jet fuel, the use of SAF can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional fossil fuels.[1] Ecofining has been in use since 2013 for renewable diesel and in 2016 for SAF production, making it a proven tool for helping to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, particularly in air travel.

Over the past two years, Honeywell has seen rapidly increasing demand for renewable fuel technologies, including Ecofining. This growth tracks with international decarbonization efforts—especially in air travel. Initiatives like the SAF Grand Challenge and SAF tax credit in the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act as well as the European Council’s ‘Fit for 55’ package have set in motion key drivers to expand SAF production, accelerating the energy transition and aviation’s journey to net-zero emissions.

“The dramatic growth in demand for renewable fuels technology illustrates that fuel producers are accelerating adoption of solutions to help meet ambitious decarbonization goals,” said Ken West, president and CEO of Honeywell Energy and Sustainability Solutions. “Our 50th license is a testament to Honeywell’s leadership in renewable fuels. The milestone follows back-to-back years of solution launches that harness ethanol and e-methanol—to round out one of the largest ranges of feedstock processing technologies on the market.“

Acelen Renewables joins a roster of companies around the world currently licensing Honeywell’s renewable fuels technology, including BP, CVR Energy, Diamond Green Diesel, Eni, Repsol, Total Energies, and World Energy. Of the 50 licenses, eight facilities are already in operation and more than 40 licensed plants are slated to be operational by 2030. The combined renewable fuel capacity of these plants when functioning to peak efficiency will exceed 500,000 barrels per day.

“The addition of Honeywell’s Ecofining process is essential for us to meet our goal of producing one billion liters of Renewable Diesel and Sustainable Aviation Kerosene (SAF) per year from 2026 onwards, which will make our company one of the largest biofuel producers in the world. Through our “fully sustainable” project: economically, socially, and environmentally responsible, we will show the world Brazil’s full capacity to produce the fuel of the future,” said Marcelo Cordaro, COO of Acelen Renewables.

NEW DELHI: Schneider Electric, the leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, has announced that Google, ASM, and HP have joined the Catalyze program as new global sponsors. The program, which aims to accelerate access to renewable energy across the global semiconductor value chain and IT supply landscape, encourages suppliers from throughout the semiconductor industry ecosystem to collaborate to transition their value chain to renewable sources of energy.

The announcement coincides with the COP28 United Nations Climate Change Conference taking place in Dubai. The growing participation in the program promises to greatly expand access to renewable energy in the semiconductor space. The first-of-its-kind program was first announced in July, with sponsors Intel and Applied Materials.

According to a recent study by the SEMI Semiconductor Climate Consortium, the semiconductor industry’s carbon footprint was equivalent to 500Mt of CO2 in 2021, with 16% coming from the supply chain. By transitioning suppliers onto lower-carbon sources of energy and supporting them in other decarbonization actions like electrification, the industry can make a significant impact on its overall Scope 3 emissions.

“We are delighted to welcome Google, ASM, and HP to the Catalyze program. Their decision to join supports the ambition to accelerate the decarbonization of supply chains,” said Jean-Pascal Tricoire, Chairman, of Schneider Electric. “Scope 3 emissions have proven a challenge to track and manage, but the Catalyze program enables companies and their suppliers to engage and collaborate in their energy transition and decarbonization.“

The Catalyze program strives to combine energy purchasing power across the semiconductor value chain to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy projects, provide suppliers with the opportunity to participate in the market for utility-scale power purchase agreements, enable any company that supplies to a Catalyze sponsor to join across the IT supply landscape, increase awareness of the availability of renewable energy in specific global regions where the semiconductor value chain is operational, and leverage numerous educational and digital technology platform engagements to drive measurable actions in supply chain decarbonization.

The growing participation in the Catalyze program promises to greatly expand access to renewable energy in the semiconductor space, to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint and overall Scope 3 emissions.

DUBAI UAE: The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and its multilateral credit and political risk insurer, the Islamic Corporation for the Insurance of Investment and Export Credit (ICIEC), have signed a Collaborative Partnership Agreement with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to advance the global energy transition and support sustainable development goals. The partnership includes IsDB and ICIEC’s membership in the Energy Transition Accelerator Financing Platform (ETAF), a multi-stakeholder climate finance solution managed by IRENA. Through membership in ETAF, IsDB looks forward to proactively contributing to the deployment of renewable energy solutions throughout its 57 member countries that span four continents within the USD 1 billion ETAF capital mobilization target by 2030. Furthermore, the IsDB Group is joining ETAF at two ends – financing and de-risking.

ICIEC will contribute its credit and political risk insurance solutions to support the (co-)financing of renewable energy projects recommended by ETAF for the benefit of common member countries. The collaboration capitalizes on ICIEC’s expertise in credit and political risk insurance and its synergies with the broader reinsurance market.

The IsDB Group’s Chairman, H.E Dr. Muhammad Al Jasser, said, “The Bank’s membership and its pledge of USD 250 million for ETAF, as well as ICIEC’s membership, which is the credit and political risk insurance arm of the IsDB Group, reflect the Group’s resolve to accelerate climate finance and provide much-needed de-risking, which is key to attracting private capital to this domain in the economic South.“

IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera said, “To achieve climate and development targets, we must acknowledge that financing approaches vary by region, each with unique needs and criteria. By partnering with ETAF, IsDB, and ICIEC are playing an important role in enhancing the platform’s inclusivity, expanding its available tools and resources, and enabling more effective project support to be tailored to the distinct needs of more developing countries.“
