NEW DELHI: On the morning of 1st May 2025, a 37-year-old man was rushed to Manipal Hospital following a brain hemorrhage and rapid loss of consciousness. He was managed in the ICU and placed on ventilatory support. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, he was declared brain dead on 12th May 2025. He is survived by his wife and a 9-year-old child.

Despite the unimaginable grief, his wife made the courageous and selfless decision to donate all his organs, duly supported by her family and counseling team. The liver and both kidneys were retrieved and allocated by NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization), while the heart and lungs were deemed unfit for transplant. The liver was transplanted into a 61-year-old male, and one kidney into a 52-year-old male, both at HCMCT Manipal Hospital, Dwarka. The second kidney was transplanted into a 59-year-old female at another private hospital in Delhi.

Dr. Shrikanth Srinivasan, Chairman, Manipal Institute of Critical Care Medicine, “Despite the best efforts of the treating team, the patient’s condition did not improve and was declared brain dead on 12th May 2025. Despite the profound loss, the family made the courageous decision to donate his organs, offering a gift of life to those in need. Their strength and compassion in such a difficult time is truly inspiring and serve as a powerful reminder of the impact one life can have on many.”

Dr. (Col) Avnish Seth VSM, Head, Manipal Organ Sharing & Transplant (MOST), said, “Organ donation should be an essential component of end-of-life care. Only if the family is fully convinced that their loved one succumbed despite the best possible treatment, will they consider doing something for others. Trust is an important component. Transparency in the allocation of organs as per the waiting list, like it is being done in our country by NOTTO, gives a lot of confidence to the family to arrive at the correct decision. This altruistic gesture by the family has saved three lives, and this is the true spirit of humanity. He will live on.”

There remains a wide gap between patients who need transplants and the organs that are available in India. Around 1.8 lakh people suffer from kidney failure every year, however, only 13,426 kidney transplants were performed in 2023. An estimated 25,000 to 30,000 liver transplants are needed annually in India, but only 4491 were performed in 2023. Similarly, out of several thousand people suffering from heart failure, only 221 received a heart transplant. In the case of corneas, about 25,000 transplants are performed annually against a requirement of 1 lakh.

This noble act of organ donation highlights the pressing need for organ donations in India, as there is a significant disparity between patients awaiting transplants and the availability of organs. Increasing awareness and participation in organ donation can bridge this gap and offer hope to countless lives in need.

Dr. Balaji B S, Consultant – Neurology & Epileptology, Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru

You’re talking to someone and suddenly they fall silent, their face sags, or their speech is slurred. It’s frightening—but it’s what you do after that can save their life.

A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is cut off or disrupted. Without oxygen, brain cells start to die within a matter of minutes. Immediate action can make the difference between a full recovery and disability, or even death. Stroke is one of the major causes of death and disability worldwide. However, many people don’t know what to do during those important initial moments. Here are five lifesaving steps you should take if someone close to you is having a stroke.

Act FAST to Recognize the Signs – The simplest way to identify a stroke is to remember FAST:

F – Face: Is one side of the face drooping when smiling?

A – Arms: Is one arm sagging when raised?

S – Speech: Is one’s speech slurring or abnormal?

T – Time: Time to call emergency services right away.

Other symptoms can be sudden vision loss, confusion, dizziness, or a bad headache.

Call Emergency Services Immediately – The moment someone notices these symptoms, it is very important to call for an ambulance. Don’t take the person yourself—paramedics can start treatment en route and notify the hospital to have stroke care ready. Early treatment is essential, particularly if clot-dissolving medication is administered within a small window (usually 3–4.5 hours after the attack).

Write Down the Time of Symptom Onset – Doctors will need to know exactly when symptoms started. This determines which treatments are possible. If you don’t know, note the last time the person was seen “normal.” Save the time on your phone or write it down. Every minute counts.

Keep the Person Safe and Still –

Place them on their side if they’re vomiting or unconscious.

Unbutton and loosen tight clothing.

Do not give food, water, or medication—swallowing could be compromised, leading to choking.

Don’t assume – Don’t assume it’s low blood sugar or a seizure. And don’t ever administer NSAIDs unless told to by a doctor—it can make the situation worse with a bleeding stroke. Even if the symptoms immediately go away (like in the case of a mini-stroke or TIA), call emergency services. It may be an early warning of a more imminent stroke to come.

Strokes can happen at a moment’s notice, but your reaction does not have to be. Recognizing the symptoms and moving quickly can save a life or spare the person from lifelong disability. Learn the FAST signs and share them with others.

The campaign aims to shed light on the imminent threats faced by tigers due to habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict.

Successful Tiger count increase is the outcome of strategies of the government promoting coexistence among the communities around forests and wildlife. We are organizing the “Tadoba Festival” in Chandrapur, the tiger capital of the world from March 1 to 3, 2024 to celebrate this success as well as to take these coexistence strategies global for the conservation of our wildlife for future generations. I extend my invitation to the Miss World team and contestants to visit the Tadoba Festival and Tadoba Safari during the Tadoba Festival next week.

The grand finale on March 9, 2024, at Jio Convention Centre, Mumbai will be live-streamed on the Sony Liv app.

Addressing a media conference, Varun Gupta, Joint Managing Director of Kent RO Systems Limited, said, “We are proud to launch the latest range of Kühl Stylish Fans in Pune, aligning with our brand philosophy focusing on energy, environment, and technology. With the rising temperature and the need to conserve energy, we believe that these fans will be in high demand in the region. Notably, a typical induction fan consumes around 80 watts of power, whereas a Kühl BLDC fan consumes only 28 watts of power at full speed. This means that Kühl BLDC fans can achieve energy savings of up to 65 percent.”

Gupta further added, “Kuhl, which entered the Indian ceiling fan market last year with a premium range of smart and stylish fans, has made significant strides in its first year of operations. The brand boasts the largest selection of high-end premium fans in India and is now prepared to dominate the mass premium category in the country. Encouraged by the positive response to its initial offerings, the brand is aggressively expanding its product portfolio and venturing into new territories.
NEW DELHI: The family of 58-year-old Mr. Suresh, who was declared brain dead at HCMCT Manipal Hospital, Dwarka took the brave decision of donating his liver, kidneys, and corneas on Tuesday, 29th August 2023. Mr. Suresh was at work on 26th August when he fell unconscious. His colleagues found that he had no pulse. One of his colleagues gave him CPR and he was immediately rushed to the hospital. The CPR was continued in the hospital’s Emergency, The patient was revived but he did not regain consciousness. A CT scan was conducted, revealing a significant brain hemorrhage as the underlying cause. Despite the best efforts of doctors, his condition continued to deteriorate, and he was declared brain dead on 28th August.

National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) then quickly allotted the organs as per their waiting list. One kidney was allocated to a 29-year-old male patient at `Manipal Hospital, Dwarka, and the other was allocated to a 60-year-old patient at Asian Institute of Medical Science, Faridabad the liver was allocated to a 59-year-old patient at Max Hospital, Dwarka. A green corridor was created on 29th August at 8:06 AM by Delhi police from HCMCT Manipal Hospital, Dwarka to Max Hospital, Vaishali. Both the corneas were also retrieved by the eye bank.

Dr. Anurag Saxena, Head of Neurosurgery, HCMCT Manipal Hospital, Dwarka said, “After stabilization of his condition an urgent CT scan was done which revealed that he has suffered from a massive brain hemorrhage after which he was put on a ventilator. Despite intensive treatment under the care of Neurosurgery and Critical Care teams, he could not recover and was declared brain dead on 28th August 2023.”

Dr. (Colonel) Avnish Seth VSM, Head, Manipal Organ Sharing & Transplant (MOST) said, “The team worked closely with the patient’s family, providing them with the required information and support so that they could make an informed decision. The family was very keen to donate all his organs. However, the lungs and heart could not be retrieved as they were unfit for transplantation. The liver and kidney were retrieved by our hospital team and transported for a successful transplantation. The family saved the lives of three patients in critical condition and gave the gift of sight to two others.”

Ms Viji Varghese, Director, HCMCT Manipal Hospital, Dwarka said, “The family’s decision to donate organs made a difference in the lives of others. The legacy of the donor will live on through the lives he has saved. Donating one’s organs is a gift of life, it is an opportunity to give someone else a second chance in life. We strongly encourage everyone to think about organ donation and to register as an organ donor. We can save lives if we work together.”

There is a wide gap between patients who need transplants and the organs that are available in India. 1.8 lakh people suffer from renal failure every year, however, only 15,000 renal transplants are done. An estimated 25,000 to 30,000 liver transplants are needed annually in India but only about 2000 are performed. Similarly, of several thousand who suffer from heart failure, only 200 get a heart transplant. In the case of Corneas, about 25,000 transplants are done every year against a requirement of 1 lakh.

The noble act of organ donation highlights the pressing need for organ donations in India, as there is a significant disparity between patients awaiting transplants and the availability of organs. Increasing awareness and participation in organ donation can bridge this gap and offer hope to countless lives in need.
