Aims to complete screening for 10,000 ultra-poor women for cervical and breast cancer by December 2025

SHIRDI: To promote preventive healthcare for underprivileged women in rural Maharashtra, the Hinduja Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the 110-year-old Hinduja Group, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dr. Mane Medical Foundation & Research Centre, a reputed Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) based in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. The partnership marks the launch of a comprehensive cancer screening and awareness program, offered entirely free of cost, in Shirdi and other districts of Maharashtra.

This grassroots initiative aims to screen 10,000 ultra-poor women for cervical and breast cancer by December 2025. The first screening camp was held on June 8 at Rahuri, 60 km from Shirdi, where nearly 350 women were screened.

Focused on early detection and timely intervention, the program addresses a critical gap in access to preventive healthcare for marginalised groups who often go undiagnosed due to financial and geographical barriers.

Dr. Mane Medical Foundation will lead on-ground implementation, supported by community outreach efforts. All women will undergo Pap Smear and Clinical Breast Examination (CBE), and where needed, additional health checks including Haemoglobin, Blood Sugar, and Cholesterol tests.

Speaking on the initiative, Namrata Hinduja, Member, Steering Committee of Hinduja Foundation, said, “Empowering women through health is the foundation of building stronger communities. This initiative reaffirms our unwavering commitment to closing critical healthcare gaps and ensuring that no woman is denied care because of her economic circumstances.”

Paul Abraham, President of Hinduja Foundation, said, “Cancer has emerged as the fastest-growing health concern in India, with over 1.7 million new cases reported in 2025. Projections indicate that this number could rise to 2.5 million by 2030. Early detection through screening is key to managing costs and survival chances. This initiative is not just about early detection & treatment, but also about education, empowerment, and building a culture of preventive care. We are committed to creating a lasting impact in communities that need it the most.”

Women with positive findings will receive free-of-cost treatment at Dr. Mane’s Charitable Cancer Hospital in Rahuri, Shirdi. The program also includes training for community health workers to build long-term healthcare capacity in local areas.

Supported by Reliance Life Insurance, the initiative is currently being implemented in Shirdi and is planned to expand to other cancer hotbeds such as Osmanabad and Ahilyanagar districts soon.

BY: Dr. Pavan Yadav, Lead Consultant – Interventional Pulmonology & Lung Transplantation, Aster RV Hospital

Lung cancer is a formidable adversary, claiming countless lives each year. Enhancing public awareness about this disease is crucial. Awareness of lung cancer is essential for saving lives. By understanding the disease, its risk factors, and the importance of early detection, we can work towards a future where lung cancer is no longer a leading cause of death.

Tobacco smoking is the primary risk factor for lung cancer in India, contributing to a significant proportion of cases. However, exposure to environmental pollutants, occupational hazards, and genetic factors also play crucial roles in the development of this disease.

Risk Factors and Prevention

Understanding the risk factors associated with lung cancer is vital for promoting prevention and early detection. Major risk factors include:

Tobacco Use: Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, responsible for about 85% of all cases. Quitting smoking is the most effective way to reduce the risk.

Secondhand Smoke: Exposure to secondhand smoke also increases the risk of developing lung cancer.

Environmental and Occupational Exposures: Prolonged exposure to asbestos, radon gas, and other hazardous substances can elevate the risk of lung cancer.

Genetic Predisposition: Family history and genetic factors can contribute to an individual’s susceptibility to lung cancer.

The Importance of Early Detection and Screening

Early cancer detection and screening play a crucial role in improving lung cancer outcomes. Here are some key points highlighting their significance:

Early Detection Saves Lives: Early detection of lung cancer leads to better treatment outcomes and higher survival rates. When lung cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, before it has spread to other parts of the body, there is a higher chance of successful treatment and potential cure.

Screening Programs for High-Risk Individuals: For individuals at high risk of developing lung cancer, such as heavy smokers and those with a family history of the disease, regular screening programs are recommended. Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans are commonly used for early detection in high-risk populations.

Importance of Smoking Cessation: Encouraging smoking cessation is not only a preventive measure but also a way to enable early detection. Former smokers should be aware of their heightened risk for lung cancer and participate in screening programs to detect any potential abnormalities at an early stage.

Public Awareness Campaigns: Raising awareness about the importance of early cancer detection through public campaigns can encourage people to seek medical attention promptly if they experience any concerning symptoms or fall into high-risk categories.

Recognizing Warning Signs: Educating the public about common lung cancer symptoms, such as persistent cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, hoarseness, unexplained weight loss, and coughing up blood, can prompt individuals to seek medical evaluation if they experience these signs.

Access to Healthcare: Improving access to healthcare services and diagnostic facilities is crucial for early detection. Efforts should be made to ensure that people, especially those in remote or underserved areas, have access to screening and diagnostic resources.

Combining Screening with Preventive Measures: Early detection should be complemented with preventive measures. Promoting a healthy lifestyle, avoiding tobacco products, and minimizing exposure to environmental pollutants can help reduce the risk of developing lung cancer.

Research and Technological Advancements: Continued research in the field of lung cancer detection and screening is essential to develop better and more accurate screening methods, leading to earlier diagnosis and improved patient outcomes.

By addressing these risk factors and emphasizing the importance of early detection, we can improve lung cancer outcomes in India and reduce the burden of this devastating disease. Public awareness, healthcare access, and preventive measures are all critical components in the fight against lung cancer.

BENGALURU: Regular annual eye screenings play a pivotal role in identifying potential vision issues before they escalate, allowing for timely interventions. By detecting signs of low vision early on, individuals can receive the necessary care and support to maintain optimal visual health.

As part of observing Low Vision Awareness Month, Dr. Nishant, Consultant – Paediatric Ophthalmology at Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital Bannerghatta, urged increased awareness among both the general public and medical professionals regarding the early recognition of low vision issues and prompt initiation of treatment. He emphasized the importance of understanding low vision and blindness, including their causes, and highlighted the significance of early detection. Dr. Nishant also delved into the latest advancements in understanding, treating, and preventing various eye diseases, as well as the utilization of visual aids for enhancing vision.

Blindness signifies a complete loss or severe limitation of vision, while low vision denotes persistent visual challenges despite treatment. Understanding these distinctions is crucial in promoting awareness and support for those navigating visual impairments. A variety of conditions contribute to low vision, such as Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinitis Pigmentosa, optic nerve damage, Albinism, Cataract, Cortical Visual Impairment, Corneal Opacity, Toxoplasma, Retinal Detachment, and Amblyopia.

Dr. Nishant said “With millions affected by blindness and visual impairment in India, including thousands of children, the call for heightened awareness and action is urgent. Visual impairment not only hinders professional endeavors but also impacts daily activities. Yet, with adequate visual aids and support, individuals with low vision can overcome challenges and thrive independently. Early intervention not only preserves vision but also reduces the risk of complications that can significantly impact overall health and quality of life.”

Recent technological advancements have introduced a variety of aids to assist those with low vision. Optical devices, including hand-held telescopes, spectacles, and magnifiers, along with non-optical aids like reading lamps and guides, have made significant differences. Furthermore, electronic devices such as Closed-Circuit Video Magnification, as well as computer hardware and software providing screen magnification, synthesized speech, and tactile display, offer modern solutions to the challenges of low vision.

“It’s crucial to instill the habit of eye check-ups from a young age, as many vision problems can be effectively managed if detected early. By screening children between 3-5 years old, eye health professionals can identify conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (crossed eyes), which, if left untreated, can lead to permanent vision impairment. Similarly, adults over 40 are at higher risk for age-related eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. Annual eye examinations can catch these conditions in their early stages when treatment is most effective. Moreover, individuals with diabetes and hypertension are susceptible to diabetic retinopathy and hypertensive retinopathy, respectively, which can cause severe vision loss if left unmanaged. Regular eye check-ups for these patients are crucial for detecting signs of retinal damage early and implementing measures to prevent further progression.” added Dr. Nishanth.

This Low Vision Awareness Month, Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital is dedicated to raising awareness about the significance of eye health and the technologies available to assist individuals living with low vision. By disseminating knowledge and promoting regular eye examinations, the hospital aims to collaborate in mitigating the impact of low vision on both individuals and society.
