World premiere at CES 2026: ZF presents “Active Noise Reduction” function for the chassis

INDIA: In-vehicle tire noise is an unwelcome intrusion that can travel through chassis components, such as control arms and dampers. At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), ZF is presenting its new “Active Noise Reduction” software function, which reduces this type of noise at the source without additional noise-dampening hardware in the vehicle. The purely software-based function for the chassis significantly minimizes annoying tire noise in the interior. In the future, the technology group will expand the use of the function to other ZF chassis actuators.

The software-based solution uses ZF’s Smart Chassis Sensor with an integrated acceleration sensor to precisely measure vibrations transmitted from the tires to the vehicle via the chassis. The vibration data is analyzed using a specially developed algorithm that recognizes the characteristic noise patterns of tire cavity noise (typically around 200 hertz). The software then generates a counter-signal provided by ZF’s cubiX software via the valves of semi-active dampers (CDC). The function uses micro-movements of the damper to specifically reduce the noise interference without impairing the actual damper function.

“Active Noise Reduction is an excellent example of how we use smart algorithms to make ZF components even more efficient. This gives our semi-active CDC dampers a clear, unique selling point in the market and sets new standards in comfort – without the need for any additional noise-dampening hardware,” says Dr. Peter Holdmann, member of the ZF Board of Management and head of Division Chassis Solutions.

Intelligent dampers, brilliant quietness: this is what the future of chassis technology sounds like

The achievement of noise reduction is implemented purely on a software basis through intelligent control of the CDC dampers – without additional installation costs or space requirements. The current version of the technology achieves noise reductions of more than 3 dB today, which is a clearly audible difference for passengers. Up to 10 dB is possible in the future.

Active Noise Reduction can be adapted to different vehicle types and customer requirements via software. This creates a new market, particularly for lower-priced vehicles, as high-quality acoustic solutions with microphones or speakers have mostly been available only in luxury segments. Approximately 40 percent of all semi-active dampers worldwide already come from ZF, making the technology group the market leader. In view of the trend toward automated driving, ZF expects sales in this area to increase.

Active Noise Reduction is part of Chassis 2.0

Series production of Active Noise Reduction is scheduled to start in 2028. In the future, the software function may also be used in other ZF actuators — for example, for active reduction of brake squeal or in the fully active damping system sMOTION.

“Thanks to our system expertise, we can offer our mechatronic actuators as true innovation drivers with the help of smart algorithms, and we will extend our software-based control approach to other ZF actuators in the future. The goal for us is clear: mechatronic actuators that are capable of efficiently reducing both their own and external noise with the help of software,” explains Holdmann.

“The new function fits perfectly into ZF’s Chassis 2.0 product strategy. Chassis 2.0 uses intelligent and networkable actuators to enable new chassis functions via software. It combines intelligent actuators such as brakes, steering, and damping, scalable electronic architectures (E/E), and innovative software solutions into a highly integrated, flexible system. “With our Chassis 2.0, we are laying the foundation for the software-defined vehicle,” says Holdmann.

Integrated capabilities aim to simplify and speed software development and testing to help reduce related costs and de-risk production timelines

BENGALURU: Tata Elxsi, a global leader in design and technology services, announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Synopsys, a leader in silicon to systems design solutions, to collaborate to deliver advanced automotive virtualization solutions. The MoU was signed at the SNUG India 2025 event in Bengaluru by senior leaders from both companies.

The collaboration will provide customers pre-verified, integrated solutions and services that make it easy to design and deploy virtual electronic control units (vECUs), a cornerstone technology critical for efficient software development and testing in today’s software-defined vehicles. The collaboration brings together Tata Elxsi’s engineering capabilities in embedded systems and integration with Synopsys’ industry-leading virtualization solutions that are used by more than 50 global automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to help reduce development complexity and cost, improve the quality of software systems, and de-risk vehicle production timelines.

Together, the companies are already collaborating on programs with several global customers to enable vECUs, as well as software bring-up, board support package (BSP) integration, and early-stage software validation. These solutions are being deployed across vehicle domains such as powertrain, chassis, body control, gateway, and central compute, helping customers simulate real-world scenarios, validate software early, and reduce reliance on physical prototypes.

Through the collaboration, Synopsys and Tata Elxsi will further explore opportunities to scale and accelerate the deployment of electronics digital twins for multi-ECU and application-specific systems.

“Our partnership with Synopsys reflects a future-forward response to how vehicle development is evolving. As OEMs move away from traditional workflows, there is growing demand for engineering services that are tightly integrated with virtualization tools. This strategic collaboration enables us to jointly address that shift with focus, flexibility, and domain depth,” said Sundar Ganapathi, Chief Technology Officer of Automotive, Tata Elxsi.

By Junaid Ahmed

Augmented Reality (AR) is rapidly evolving from a niche technology to a mainstream tool that is reshaping how we interact with the world. What started with simple smartphone-based experiences has advanced to complex, immersive systems that blend digital and physical environments. With applications ranging from gaming to medical surgeries, AR is increasingly becoming a transformative technology across various industries. In this article, we will explore the latest advancements in AR technology, its architectural components, and how its applications are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

1. The Evolution of AR Technologies

AR is not a new concept, but recent advancements have unlocked new possibilities for interaction and immersion. The key drivers of this evolution can be broken down into several technological improvements:

a. Software and Algorithmic Advancements

Software innovations are just as critical to AR development. The integration of computer vision, machine learning, and AI is transforming AR from passive visualization to dynamic, interactive experiences.

Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM): SLAM algorithms allow AR devices to map and understand the environment in real time while also tracking their position within that environment. This technology is essential for placing virtual objects in real-world contexts with high accuracy, even in dynamic or unstructured environments.

Spatial Anchoring: The ability to persistently anchor digital objects within a physical space is a game-changer for AR. Technologies such as Apple’s ARKit’s “World Tracking” and Google’s ARCore’s “Cloud Anchors” enable persistent, multi-user AR experiences where digital objects can be seen and interacted with by multiple people in real time.

Deep Learning and Computer Vision: AI-driven computer vision systems allow AR applications to recognize and understand objects, faces, and gestures. These capabilities can be used for applications ranging from virtual try-ons in fashion to facial recognition in security systems.

b. Cloud Integration and Edge Computing

The move to cloud and edge computing plays a crucial role in overcoming the limitations of local hardware processing. Cloud-based AR platforms can offload complex computations to high-performance servers, enabling more sophisticated AR experiences. Edge computing, on the other hand, allows data processing to occur closer to the source of data (the device itself), which reduces latency and enhances real-time interactivity.

2. Applications of Advanced AR

AR’s potential extends across a variety of sectors, with advanced technologies allowing for new levels of realism, interactivity, and utility. Some of the most significant applications include:

a. Healthcare and Surgery

AR is revolutionizing healthcare by providing real-time visual overlays during medical procedures. Surgeons can use AR to superimpose critical data, such as patient anatomy or imaging scans, directly onto the patient during surgery, improving precision and reducing the risk of errors. The use of AR also facilitates remote assistance, where specialists can guide on-site teams through complex procedures using live AR feeds.

Enhanced Diagnostics: With the integration of machine learning, AR systems can help healthcare professionals visualize complex diagnostic data, such as MRI or CT scans, in 3D, aiding in better decision-making.

Training and Education: AR is being used to create immersive medical simulations, providing medical students with the opportunity to practice surgical techniques or diagnose conditions in a controlled virtual environment.

b. Retail and E-Commerce

The retail industry has embraced AR for creating immersive shopping experiences, enhancing both in-store and online engagement. Virtual try-ons, where customers can see how clothes, accessories, or even makeup will look on them, are one of the most popular applications.

Product Visualization: AR allows customers to visualize products in their own home environments before making a purchase. For instance, Ikea’s app allows customers to place virtual furniture in their living rooms to determine fit and style.

In-store Navigation and Assistance: AR systems can provide in-store navigation, guiding customers to products and offering personalized promotions or product information when they point their device at items.

c. Automotive Industry

The automotive industry is leveraging AR to enhance both driver experience and vehicle design. From heads-up displays (HUDs) that project navigation instructions onto the windshield to AR-based maintenance guides, AR is improving safety and functionality in modern vehicles.

Augmented Navigation: By overlaying real-time navigation data directly onto a driver’s view of the road, AR can reduce distraction and enhance situational awareness, especially when navigating complex environments or cities.

Vehicle Design and Manufacturing: AR is aiding in the design and manufacturing process by enabling engineers to visualize complex components in 3D, ensuring more precise assembly and minimizing errors.

d. Military and Defence

The military sector has long been a key adopter of AR technology, utilizing it to improve training, situational awareness, and battlefield management. Soldiers equipped with AR glasses can access critical information in real-time, such as enemy location, terrain mapping, and tactical data.

Combat Training: AR simulators provide immersive, realistic training scenarios for soldiers, helping them to rehearse missions and combat tactics in a virtual yet lifelike environment.

Tactical Decision Support: In the battlefield, AR can project maps, mission-critical data, and other environmental details, enabling faster, better-informed decision-making during operations.

e. Entertainment and Gaming

While AR gaming has been around for a while, recent advancements are making these experiences more interactive and realistic. The success of games like Pokémon Go highlighted the immense potential of AR in entertainment, but the future promises even more immersive experiences.

Mixed-Reality Gaming: The integration of physical and virtual spaces can create highly engaging experiences. With the combination of AR and VR (Virtual Reality), next-gen games may allow users to seamlessly transition between the real world and virtual worlds with minimal latency and complete immersion.

Live Events and Experiences: Concerts, sports events, and theater performances are increasingly using AR to engage audiences. Virtual performers or interactive holograms are augmenting live experiences, providing novel ways to interact with the content.

3. Challenges and Future Directions

Despite its rapid growth, AR still faces several challenges, particularly in areas related to usability, privacy, and scalability.

a. User Experience

Ensuring an intuitive and comfortable user experience is one of the biggest hurdles for AR developers. Current AR devices often struggle with issues like small field-of-view, limited battery life, and difficulties in tracking fast-moving objects or people. Furthermore, the complexity of interacting with AR interfaces, especially in mobile environments, may overwhelm users.

b. Privacy and Security Concerns

With AR systems collecting vast amounts of data about the physical world, such as location, object recognition, and even personal habits, privacy and security concerns are significant. Developers will need to prioritize data protection to avoid potential breaches or misuse.

c. Content Creation and Standardization

As AR technologies continue to evolve, the creation of high-quality AR content requires specialized skills. Content developers need to integrate 3D modeling, spatial design, and AI, making it a resource-intensive process. Moreover, there is no universal standard for AR content, which creates interoperability issues between devices and platforms.

d. Scalability

For large-scale AR experiences, such as those in smart cities or industrial applications, challenges related to the real-time synchronization of massive datasets and devices come into play. Ensuring low-latency communication, cloud management, and efficient rendering will be essential as AR applications scale to support more users.

GERMANY: ZF is harnessing the power of software to develop smarter, more connected, and highly efficient commercial vehicle technologies. By integrating ZF’s intelligent software solutions with its chassis technologies, vehicle performance and safety can be improved, ensuring safer and smoother journeys. As automotive technologies shift towards greater digital integration, ZF is setting the pace as an enabler of smart and connected technologies. ZF is also able to leverage its software domain expertise from other vehicle segments within the ZF Group to produce intelligent systems quickly and cost-effectively that can lower the overall total cost of ownership (TCO).

Braking and e-Drive Synergy Program

Harnessing the energy created when a vehicle decelerates to recharge onboard batteries can effectively extend the range of an electric vehicle or reduce the size of the batteries needed. ZF’s Braking and e-Drive Synergy Program harmonizes the electric driveline and braking functions to optimize recuperation under full stability control, beyond current standards, boosting efficiency, safety, and comfort while reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO).

The system works by combining ZF’s next-generation e-drives, the AxTrax 2 dual and CeTrax 2 dual, with its mBSP XBS advanced braking system to leverage the capabilities of the e-drive to act as an actuator for the braking system and vice versa, in controlling acceleration and braking. In doing so, the system maximizes energy recuperation to recharge the onboard batteries during driving, effectively extending the vehicle’s range. The system also provides ‘one-pedal-drive’ functionality, increasing driving comfort, especially in low-speed maneuvering, such as for yard vehicle applications or urban driving.

The system also offers improved launch capabilities by optimizing the traction control function, reducing tire wear, and enhancing vehicle performance and stability on slippery ground.

Software Brake Resistor

ZF has developed a software solution that helps replace hardware in the form of brake resistors for battery electric vehicles. The new software function can intelligently limit the maximum energy content of the battery in certain charging situations, ensuring any extra energy created by regenerative braking can then be stored in the vehicle’s batteries. The system uses location data to determine if it is being charged in an area where it is likely to descend a steep gradient which could create significant additional battery charge in the early part of its journey. If so, it ensures the battery saves capacity during charging for energy harvesting. The algorithm intelligently ensures that a 100% charge will be reached on its descent. In all other areas, the system allows the battery to be fully charged when plugged in.

Thanks to this innovation, bulky, heavy, and expensive brake resistors are no longer needed, while energy efficiency is maximized, and all energy is available for propulsion. The solution saves approximately 150kg of weight and increases available space within the chassis. The system demonstrates how an intelligent server-cloud-based function can save cost and weight while improving efficiency and sustainability.
