GUVNL project marks ENGIE’s entry into utility‑scale storage in India, strengthening Its Role in India’s Clean Energy Future

GUJARAT: ENGIE, a global leader in low-carbon energy and services, today announced a major milestone in its India journey with the successful award of 280 MW / 2 hrs of battery storage capacity in the Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) auction. Part of the 2 GW / 4 GWh national tender, this represents one of the largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) allocations in the country to date and marks ENGIE’s formal entry into utility-scale storage in India. With this award, ENGIE’s India portfolio now reaches approximately 2.75 GW, strengthening its role as a long-term partner in enabling India’s 500 GW clean energy ambition and accelerating the shift toward firm, future-ready renewable power.

This project comes at a pivotal moment for India’s renewable and storage sector. As solar and wind capacity scale rapidly, the country needs large-format storage systems that can deliver clean power on demand, reduce curtailment, and enhance grid stability. ENGIE’s GUVNL BESS project will help address peak loads, enable smoother 24/7 renewable integration, and support the next phase of India’s grid modernisation.

Globally, ENGIE has set an ambition of deploying 95 GW of renewable and storage installed capacity by 2030. The Group already operates 55 GW and has 6 GW under construction, bringing deep technological expertise and operational maturity to India’s evolving storage market. The GUVNL award builds on this global foundation and positions ENGIE to deliver a new class of reliable, flexible energy solutions to India.

Amit Jain, CEO and Country Manager ENGIE India, Managing Director Renewables & Batteries India & South-East Asia, expressed, “India’s renewable story is entering a decisive phase, where scale must be matched with firmness, flexibility, and digital intelligence. Storage is the bridge that will take us there. This award strengthens ENGIE’s mission to build the next generation of hybrid and storage-backed infrastructure that can support peak demand, integrate more renewables, and deliver dependable clean power to millions. Backed by ENGIE’s global storage expertise, we are committed to shaping an energy system that is resilient, efficient, and ready for the future India is building.”

The win reinforces ENGIE’s long-term commitment to India’s clean energy future. With scalable, technology-led renewable and storage solutions, ENGIE continues to advance a resilient, low-carbon energy ecosystem that is essential to meeting India’s 2030 and 2047 climate goals.

Contracts 1,500 MWh of dedicated 6-hour energy storage capacity to provide true round-the-clock green energy solutions for its industrial customers

HYDERABAD: Serentica Renewables (“Serentica” or the “Company”), a leading C&I-focused renewable energy developer in India, announced that it has signed a first-of-its-kind standalone energy storage capacity offtake contract with global energy storage developer, Greenko Group. As part of this contract, Serentica will leverage Greenko’s unique energy storage capabilities to utilize a cumulative 1,500 MWhr capacity from its upcoming energy storage projects in Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

This landmark deal will augment Serentica’s efforts to deliver round-the-clock, firm, and dispatchable renewable energy to its industrial customers with an annual assurance of >95% and a 15-min time-block assurance of >85%. It will uniquely position the company as one of the select few renewable generator IPPs in the country that can offer a true round-the-clock solution.

Commenting on the milestone, Pratik Agarwal, Director, of Serentica Renewables, said, “Long-duration energy storage is critical to decarbonizing the country’s energy consumption and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As we gear up to deliver round-the-clock renewable energy for our industrial customers, this unique energy storage capacity offtake contract with Greenko puts us on an accelerated trajectory in our mission to transition hard-to-abate, energy-intensive industries to clean energy and help reverse climate change.”

As the world transitions to a clean energy future, energy storage solutions will play a vital role in ensuring a reliable and sustainable power supply. These advanced storage solutions help industries to move away from captive thermal plants or other fossil fuel-based sources and rely on renewable energy for 100% of their electricity needs. Today, pumped storage hydropower (PSH) is considered as the most mature and widely used energy storage technology, accounting for over 95% of the world’s installed storage capacity.
