New Can-Am Factory Team Maverick R shows superb potential in the hands of Lopez

South Racing Can-Am Team’s Lumsden duo and Janesky gain valuable desert experience

MENGOUB-BOUÂRFA (MOROCCO): The Can-Am Factory Team’s Rokas Baciuška teamed up with Spaniard Oriol Vidal to clinch the Challenger category title in the FIA World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC) at a grueling five-stage Rally of Morocco.

The Can-Am Factory Team achieved outright victories at three of the five rounds in Abu Dhabi, Portugal, and Argentina. Still, Baciuška had one eye on the overall title in Morocco and erred on the side of caution in several instances during the demanding event across rocky terrain and dunes in North Africa. The success marked the Lithuanian’s third title in as many years in the W2RC after his back-to-back SSV successes in 2022 and 2023.

The Can-Am Factory and South Racing Can-Am Team also used the Moroccan event to evaluate the new Can-Am Maverick R in a competitive environment before the cars entered active competition at the start of 2025. They were not eligible for the FIA event and ran in an ‘Experimental’ category.

Multiple Dakar winner Francisco Lopez teamed up with Argentina’s Sebastian Cesana and the Chilean topped the SSV times on the Prologue, stages one, two, and four.

His Can-Am Factory Team colleague Hunter Miller was partnered by fellow American Andrew Short in a second Can-Am Maverick R. He beat Lopez by seven seconds to win the third stage.

The Dutch duo of Erik van Loon and Henrie Verschuuren and the Argentine pairing of former quad front-runner Manuel Andujar and Bernardo Graue crewed the South Racing Can-Am Team-entered cars. Andujar was second quickest behind Lopez on stage four and set the fastest time overall in the last stage in the Experimental SSV section. Van Loon overcame fuel pump issues to finish a valuable test exercise for the team.

The South Racing Can-Am Team also ran three Maverick X3s for the American trio of Lawrence Janesky and Craig and Zacharie Lumsden and their respective co-drivers Bruno Jacomy, Jamie Lambert, and Shannon Moham. They gained valuable experience in the competitive Challenger category in one of the world’s most demanding racing environments.

South Racing Can-Am Team’s managing director Scott Abraham said: “It is a great way to end the W2RC season. This is the third consecutive time that Can-Am has won the Challenger or T3 category and has won four out of the last five years since its inception. It was a great year for Rokas.

I thank the dedication of the whole team for making this happen. Now we have a very short break before the team heads to Portalegre next week to defend the lead in the FIA Baja World Cup.”

The 25.45km Prologue near Marrakesh was used purely to determine the starting order for the opening loop stage out of Zagora although it caused its fair share of problems for several of the front-runners. Baciuška came home ninth amongst the Challenger competitors but it was a very encouraging start for Lopez in the SSV section: the Chilean was fastest.

Flash flooding and run-off water badly affected the road section between Marrakech and the night halt in Zagora. One road was blocked near Ouarzazate and many competitors arrived late into Zagora. As a result, race officials rearranged the schedule through the M’Hamid area, and the route of stage two was used for stage one and shortened to 177.17km and the opening stage was used for stage two.

Baciuška made a sensibly cautious start and came home seventh of the registered drivers in Challenger with Janesky the best of the three South Racing Can-Am Team entrants. Lopez would have been the quickest of the SSV drivers had he been eligible, as Van Loon, Andujar and Miller finished the stage without major problems, although Van Loon was later handed a one-hour penalty for missing route waypoints, Craig Lumsden was handed a 30-minute penalty for a similar issue and Zacharie Lumsden incurred penalties for failing to finish the special.

Stage two crossed the Chegaga dunes and sandy terrain in the Zagora region for 266.42km. Baciuška was eighth of the registered drivers through the tricky stage where a flying Lopez made it three wins three in the SSV class and finished well ahead of Andujar and Miller.

The route headed from Zagora to Mengoub-Bouârfa on day three and included a stage of 324.23km with large stretches of water prevalent between the Merzouga dunes after recent intense rainfall. Miller and Lopez again blitzed the SSV opposition in the development of Maverick Rs, while Baciuška finished the stage in eighth of the classified Challenger drivers and mathematically confirmed the Challenger title with two days to spare.

Baciuška said: “We started the stage on the 11th and finished the day on the eighth. We punctured near the end but I reached the finish and I was the World Champion for the third time. We have been working hard for this all season. It’s a little strange to celebrate before the end of the rally…”

The fourth 315.05km stage ran through the deserts surrounding Mengoub-Bouârfa. Andujar shadowed Lopez to the finish in the Experimental SSV section but Baciuška climbed to third in the virtual standings before stopping with technical issues 60km from the stage finish.

The final stage looped through the dunes around Mengoub-Bouârfa for 271.82km. Andujar and Lopez again showed the potential of the new Maverick R with superb stage times before the ceremonial finish in Mengoub-Bouârfa.

The South Racing Can-Am Team receives valuable support for the race program from BRP, Rotax, Method Wheels, Tensor Tires, Motul, J.Juan Brake Systems, Oakley, and Sparco.

India’s Auto Drivers Gear Up for the Montra Electric Super League

INDIA: Montra Electric, the cutting-edge EV brand from the esteemed 124-year-old Murugappa Group, is thrilled to run the Montra Electric Super League (MSL), a pioneering event tailored for auto drivers. Co-powered by Chola Finance, this groundbreaking initiative brings the excitement of the IPL to the streets with 10 dynamic teams, each comprising 17 dedicated Super Auto Riders.

The MSL is a high-octane competition featuring 10 teams, each comprising 17 exceptional auto drivers, aptly named ‘Super Riders’. This unique league aims to revolutionize the perception of electric vehicles (EVs) within the three-wheeler community, debunking common concerns like range anxiety, the MSL encourages participants to push the boundaries of EV capabilities, driving impressive distances with the help of top-up charging throughout the day.

This unique tournament features 170 Super Riders from across India, including women auto drivers, forming 10 teams that compete to cover the most kilometers. The team that logs the highest mileage emerges victorious, proving that EVs can effortlessly surpass 300 kilometers in a single day.

Roy Kurian, Business Head, of Montra Electric Last Mile Mobility said, “Through the Montra Electric Super League, we aim to demonstrate the extraordinary capabilities of our Super Autos and showcase our firm commitment to improving the lives of our Super Riders.”

Aman Sharma, President & Business Head – Vehicle Finance, from Chola Finance said “We are delighted to partner with Montra Electric in bringing forth this first-ever Super League Tournament for auto drivers. We are also happy to announce Chola’s Super Dream Children Education program to the finalists of the tournament. Chola is also actively working on innovative financing solutions for customers, to make the ownership of a Montra Electric Super Auto easier for them, which is also in line with our continuous endeavor to enable our customers to Enter a Better Life.”

Piyush Pandey, Head of Marketing, at Montra Electric, added, “We are excited to see our Super Riders embrace this challenge and feel the pride in what they are achieving. They have some extraordinary stories which need to be told”.

The scoring system of the MSL is designed to motivate and reward. Each kilometer driven by the top 14 riders of each team translates to one run, with additional runs awarded for referrals leading to deliveries or live bookings, and quality customer testimonial videos. Teams advance through a series of matches, with winners determined by total points and runs accumulated, leading to quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the grand finale.

Chola Finance, another distinguished member of the Murugappa Group, has pledged to provide free education for life to the children of up to 68 Super Riders who make it to the final stages of the tournament. This remarkable initiative underscores the tournament’s commitment to uplifting the lives of these hardworking individuals.

The Montra Electric Super League commenced on July 5th and will culminate in a grand finale in the first week of September. The victorious Super Riders will be honored at a special event at the Montra Electric factory in Chennai, where they will witness the manufacturing process of their extraordinary vehicle, Montra Electric Super Auto.

By offering substantial prize money and the transformative education initiative, the MSL is not only a thrilling competition but also a powerful catalyst for change within the auto driver community. Montra Electric is proud to lead the charge in promoting sustainable mobility and empowering the backbone of India’s transportation network. Montra Electric leads the charge toward a sustainable and electrifying future for India’s auto drivers.

ANTANANARIVO: Springbok Women’s head coach Louis Koen made nine changes to his starting team and 11 overall when he named his squad to play Kenya in the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup at Stade Makis in Antananarivo on Wednesday.

Free State Women outside back Sikholiwe Mdletshe will earn her first cap after being named on the left wing, while regular starter Sinazo Mcatshulwa returns at flanker for South Africa’s second match of the tournament after they outplayed Cameroon 55-0 in the opening match on Saturday.

Koen selected a new midfield, where Jakkie Cilliers will link up with Aphiwe Ngwevu, a try-scorer off the bench against Cameroon. Tayla Kinsey, South Africa’s most capped scrumhalf, will swap places with Rumandi Potgieter after playing her 33rd Test match off the bench at the weekend.

Squad personnel Azisa Mkiva, Roseline Botes, and Xoliswa Khuzwayo swap their opening match bench role for starting positions in the front row against Kenya.

Botes (hooker) swops places with Lindelwa Gwala and Khuzwayo (prop) with Sanelisiwe Charlie. Mkiva replaced the injured Aliyah Tchogna-Njamen early in the Cameroon game, which means Amber Schonert, who made her Test debut at the same venue last year, will provide tighthead cover against Kenya.

Vainah Ubisi and Nomsa Mokwai also swop jerseys, with Ubisi starting and Mokwai moving to the bench where she will be joined by Unathi Qolo, who will be keen to start her contribution to the Springbok Women’s quest to qualify for next year’s Rugby World Cup in England.

The Springbok Women’s last Test against Kenya was in September 2023 at the University of Western Cape Stadium in Bellville, where South Africa won by 77-12.

Only five players who started against Kenya in that Test are back and will run out in the starting line-up again: Cilliers, Mcatshulwa, Botes, Byrhandrè Dolf, and Lusanda Dumke.

Koen said he is keen to see Mdletshe in action at this level.

“She has been good at training in recent weeks and having her on board for our European tour is now reaping rewards,” said Koen.

“She did not get the opportunity in Spain or England, but kept on working hard and contributed on and off the field, so I am delighted for her to get that first cap.”

The Bok Women’s coach, who opted for a split of six forwards and two backs on the bench, said team selection is a reflection of how they are approaching this Test.

“We want to focus on our processes, and we selected the team accordingly. We have prepared the team well and we are good to go,” said Koen.

“We have a strategy for this match and how to nullify Kenya’s attacking strengths and select our team accordingly. We got over the first hurdle, but that was only the start.”

“Kenya will present a huge challenge with South Africa’s Jerome Paarwater coaching their forwards and many of our players back home (as DHL Western Province forwards coach).”

The Test is scheduled to start at 12h00 (SA time) and will be broadcast live on YouTube and SuperSport.

Springbok Women team to face Kenya:

15. Byrhandrè Dolf (Bulls Daisies) – 12 Tests, 15 points (3 tries)

14. Nomawethu Mabenge (Sanlam Boland Dames) – 17 Tests, 65 points (13 tries)

13. Jakkie Cilliers (Bulls Daisies) – 11 Tests, 29 points (2 tries, 5 conversions, 3 penalty goals)

12. Aphiwe Ngwevu (Border Ladies) – 19 Tests, 40 points (8 tries)

11. Sikholiwe Mdletshe (Free State Women) – uncapped

10. Mary Zulu (Sharks Women) – 9 Tests, 14 points (7 conversions)

9. Tayla Kinsey (Sharks Women) – 33 Tests, 48 points (2 tries, 16 conversions, 2 penalty goals)
