By: Dr. Karishma Jaradi, Head Dental Surgeon – Dentzz Dental

Festivals are known for the sweets, or mithai, that are served at them. During the holiday season, everyone gets together with family and eats, so every home has a variety of freshly made snacks. There is a lot for kids to keep bingeing on, from Kaju Katli, Kheer, and Rasmalai to Gajar Ka Halwa and other delicacies. But if there’s one thing these kids tend to ignore, it’s their teeth, especially when it comes to keeping them clean and healthy after they eat.

You can’t say enough about how important it is to keep your teeth from getting cavities after all the festive eating. Tooth decay wears away the enamel on your child’s teeth causing cavities. Hence guarding your children’s enamels against festive binges is crucial as cavity-causing bacteria end up converting the sugar from the food we eat into acids. These acids in turn demineralise and destroy the enamel of the tooth damaging it. Particles of food that we eat tend to remain stuck on the surface of the teeth that in the case of children go unnoticed and end up damaging the tooth enamel.

Teeth protection

It is impossible to completely avoid sweets and snacks or the negative effects of consuming an excessive amount of them. However, if parents take a few precautions, they can prevent their children from developing foul breath, cavities, and gum disease in addition to terrible teeth. Salads, vegetables, nuts, meat, fish, poultry, and other foods that take more chewing are healthy options to protect your children’s enamels. Additionally, parents ought to completely forbid between-meal munching or encourage its replacement with fresh fruit, nuts, or popcorn.

Most children like cheese and eating cheese can help to protect your teeth. It has a reputation for whitening teeth because the high calcium content in cheese expedites the remineralization of enamel. Cheese is also a food that balances the pH on your tongue. It contains significant amounts of calcium and phosphate, which naturally strengthen teeth and bones while generating fewer damaging acids. Consuming cheese also produces more cleansing saliva and results in fewer cavities due to these factors.

Since sugary foods and beverages are a part of festivities, it is advisable to regularly rinse your child’s mouth clean with water to prevent dental cavities and a build-up of plaque. Children tend to delay brushing their teeth or rinsing their mouths with water which simply worsens the situation. For instance, eating bread necessitates brushing and flossing afterward. It is a high-carbohydrate snack that is known to degrade and produce sugar acids which might cause cavities if adequate cleaning is not done afterward.

Finally, ending a meal with a hard item or fruit has long been recommended to reduce dental problems including caries and periodontal disease. By serving as a toothbrush to wipe away plaque and other food particles from teeth, apples’ fiber composition cleans teeth. The acidity in an apple helps destroy harmful bacteria that promote bad breath. Leave the apple peel on if you can since it contains fiber that is good for oral health.

Like apples, carrots too are fiber-rich and brush plaque off your teeth while increasing the flow of saliva, which naturally cleans teeth. Carrots not only whiten teeth but also include Vitamin B which prevents gingivitis. And like apples and carrots, leafy greens like kale help by naturally scrubbing away food debris and plaque while you eat them. These few steps in eating habits and regular brushing will guard children’s enamel against festive binges.

By: Dr. Sindhu U Muktamath, Endodontics, Laser & Aesthetic Dental Medicine, Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru

Teeth sensitivity is a common issue affecting approximately 1 in 8 individuals. This discomfort, akin to a brief shock in the teeth, is often triggered by exposure to hot, cold, sweet, or acidic substances. It becomes more prevalent with age, particularly among adults aged 20 to 40.

The root cause of teeth sensitivity lies in the thinning of the protective enamel layer or the recession of gums, which exposes the sensitive dentin underneath. Enamel erosion, gum recession, and certain dental conditions like gingivitis or periodontal disease contribute to this exposure. Individuals within the 20 to 40 age range are particularly susceptible, making it imperative for younger individuals to prioritize dental care to prevent sensitivity issues.

The impact of teeth sensitivity varies from person to person, ranging from occasional discomfort to significant alterations in dietary choices and oral health habits. While not a severe condition in itself, addressing teeth sensitivity is vital to prevent potential complications and maintain overall oral well-being.

Teeth sensitivity often prompts individuals to be cautious with their eating and drinking habits. For instance, they may refrain from accepting offers for cold beverages on hot days or may hesitate to enjoy treats like birthday cake at social gatherings. While these decisions may seem trivial, they can accumulate over time, subtly impacting one’s social experiences and enjoyment of daily activities. Additionally, the psychological toll of teeth sensitivity should not be underestimated. The fear of sudden pain can lead to constant worry, influencing food choices and potentially causing individuals to unconsciously avoid certain textures or temperatures. Over time, these changes in dietary habits can affect nutrition and overall satisfaction with meals.

7 Essential Tips to Manage Teeth Sensitivity

Know the Causes: Understanding why teeth sensitivity occurs is the first step to managing it effectively. Factors such as enamel erosion, gum recession, and dental conditions like gingivitis or periodontal disease can contribute to sensitivity. Being aware of these causes empowers you to take proactive steps to address them.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Brushing your teeth with a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste is essential for keeping enamel strong and reducing sensitivity. Dentists recommend brushing at least twice a day and flossing regularly to remove plaque and prevent gum disease, which can exacerbate sensitivity.

Choose the Right Toothpaste: Opt for toothpaste specifically formulated for sensitive teeth. These toothpaste contain special ingredients that help desensitize teeth, providing relief from discomfort. Incorporating this into your daily oral care routine can make eating and drinking more enjoyable.

Fluoride Treatments: Professional treatments like fluoride varnishes or dental bonding can help strengthen enamel and reduce sensitivity. These treatments are typically recommended by dentists for individuals with severe sensitivity or enamel erosion.

Mind Your Diet: Avoiding extremely hot or cold foods temporarily can provide relief from sensitivity. Additionally, be mindful of acidic or sugary foods and beverages, as they can contribute to enamel erosion. Choosing a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D can also promote dental health.

Try Natural Remedies: Natural remedies such as rinsing with a saltwater solution can help reduce inflammation and sensitivity. Desensitizing toothpaste with fluoride can also strengthen enamel naturally, providing an added layer of protection. Some individuals find oil pulling with coconut or sesame oil beneficial for improving gum health and reducing sensitivity.

Regular Dental Check-ups: Schedule regular dental check-ups to monitor and address any underlying issues contributing to sensitivity. Your dentist can provide personalized recommendations and treatments to manage sensitivity effectively. Early detection and intervention can prevent further complications and maintain oral well-being.

By incorporating these tips into your oral care routine, you can effectively manage teeth sensitivity and enjoy a healthier, more comfortable smile. Remember to prioritize good oral hygiene, choose the right dental products, and seek professional guidance when needed to address sensitivity effectively.

By Dr. Karishma Jaradi, Head Dental Surgeon at Dentzz Dental

It is rightly said, ‘You are what you eat’, and this is especially true when it comes to your teeth. Binging on junk edibles is your health’s worst enemy and overloading will just take a toll on your health but also can take bite out of your teeth. The edibles you eat and drink definitely have a powerful impact on your oral condition. Diets that are high on acids, contaminants, and toxins produced by bacterial intake, thrive on your enamels giving a clean entry for tooth decay. Your teeth, mouth, and gums are far more than just tools for eating. These play a vital role in helping you chew and swallow. The mouth being an initial point of contact, all the nutrients consumed are going to reflect on your dental condition. So, all that goes in your mouth impacts not only your overall health but also affects your oral state. In fact, more intake of foods poor in nutrition often has the tendency to show its adverse impacts in your mouth.

Junk foods harm the teeth in the most detrimental way, a major cause for decay of tooth and breakdown of tooth enamel. The major culprits here are sugar-based foods and toxic and non-nutritional junk foods. Throughout the day grazing over high sugary foods might make you fall prey to the sugar trap. Sugars contribute to providing bacteria that produce acids that get accumulated in your enamels, and will slowly progress towards disintegrating and waning your tooth enamels. Starches found in foods like breads, grains, cereals, and salad dressings contain added sugar which can accelerate your tooth decay process.

If you feel you are still unsure and unaware of how toxic foods adversely impact your happy teeth, it’s important you understand that it’s not only sugar which is the main reason causing damage but rather it is the chain of events that follow after you have fallen game to your sweet tooth. Toxic food ingestion can almost hijack your oral health. Due to the continuous tug-of-war that takes place in a mouth, you might often pay no heed to your constant warnings about the hazardous waves of toxic intake. Our mouth is often considered to be a powerhouse of bacteria that are both beneficial and harmful to the oral environment. Excess of toxic intake triggers the damaging bacteria to produce enamel devastating acids. These further make way for cavities and bacterial infections which when untreated can cause a hole in your enamels. These cavities have the ability to go way past the enamel, entering the deepest tooth layers causing discomfort and most likely a tooth loss. Being cautious and limiting your toxic intake is very essential if you wish to give your mouth a fighting chance to repair the mutilation.

Aerated drinks, caned and diet drinks filled with ample sugar and flavour-enhancing organic acid content greatly target your teeth. These sugar-loaded toxins contain acids like citric and phosphoric which can lead to tooth erosion. Health and sports drinks also contain a burst of toxins, artificial flavours, and are full of sugar. The acids present in them tend to stick between teeth causing toothaches and problems. Caramels, candies, lollipops, and gooey delights are the worst when it comes to oral hygiene. These stick stubbornly to the tooth surface. In case these are consumed make sure they are in your mouth only for a brief time. Dried foods like raisins and apricots are no less than caramels since they cling to your enamels. Due to drying up of water, these feature highly concentrated sugar levels. The non-soluble cellulose fiber present in them can trap sugars around the tooth worsening your condition. Starchy foods like potato chips, french fries, and pasta are a big no. Although not sweet in taste, the starch present in them converts to sugar. These easily lodge between tooth crevices.

If you wish to bathe your pearly whites in minerals, along with toxic cut-down, it’s recommended you also stimulate the flow of your saliva. Foods that counteract the acids and deliver ample of minerals and vitamins are your mouth’s best companion. Ways that help enhance and fuel up your salivation are chewing sugar-free gums and reloading your diet with fibrous fruits and vegetables. Consuming dairy products rich in calcium like cheese and yogurt helps fortify your teeth and is better than munching on sugary, starchy, and greasy treats. An efficient way to overpower harmful toxins is by consumption of green and organic teas. This will surely help maintain a healthy balance in your mouth. Along with providing your enamels with nutritious edibles, regular flossing and brushing (at least two times a day) are a must to enhance enamel health.

Tooth-damaging offenders are all around the corner, the end result being faded enamel, diminished tooth whiteness, cracking of crowns, and aging of mouth before time. So, if you aspire for a pleasant smile all through your life, bid adieu to the worst invaders from gate-crashing your teeth.
