Doctors from Sahyadri Hospitals in Pune observe

PUNE: Over the last two years, Sahyadri Hospitals in Pune have observed a troubling trend: an increase in cases of pulmonary embolism (PE) associated with long-haul international travel. Recently, a 42-year-old patient was diagnosed with PE after presenting symptoms of chest discomfort and breathlessness, exacerbated by a history of recent international flights.

Dr. Kaurabhi Zade, Interventional Radiologist at Sahyadri Hospitals, Pune, emphasized the heightened risks associated with prolonged immobility during flights. “Flights longer than four hours can triple the risk of blood clotting, primarily due to cramped seating, dehydration, and lower cabin oxygen levels,” Dr. Zade explained. This insight comes after the successful treatment of 17 cases of PE through mechanical thrombectomy at the hospital—a procedure chosen for its efficacy when traditional clot-dissolving medications are unsuitable.

One of the recent research further underscores these observations. A study titled “Travel-Associated Venous Thromboembolism” highlights a mild to moderate association between VTE and the length of travel, with the risk increasing by 26% for every additional 2 hours of air travel starting after 4 hours. The study also noted the effectiveness of low-risk prophylactic measures like graduated compression stockings in preventing VTE, particularly during flights.

The patients, ranging from 21 to 72 years old, displayed varied health backgrounds, indicating that younger populations are increasingly at risk. “Pulmonary embolism is a high mortality condition, ranking as the third most common cause of cardiovascular death. Immediate treatment is crucial,” Dr. Zade added.

Dr. Kapil Borawake, the leader of the Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT) at Sahyadri Hospitals, Pune, highlighted preventive measures, especially with the holiday season in full swing. “As people increasingly embark on long air travels, it’s crucial to be mindful of dos and don’ts to prevent health risks such as pulmonary embolism. Simple actions like taking brisk walks every half-hour, staying hydrated, and avoiding alcohol, which can further dehydrate you, are essential,” Dr. Borawake advised.

Mechanical thrombectomy involves physically removing blood clots from the patient’s arteries, an approach that was necessary when clot burdens were high or when initial medical treatments failed. Despite the procedure’s challenges, such as managing complications from massive clots, the long-term outcomes have been promising, with significant survival benefits.

The public should be aware of the risks posed by extended periods of travel. This ongoing issue of travel-associated PE stresses the importance of vigilance and prompt medical intervention, reinforcing Sahyadri Hospitals’ commitment to leading-edge cardiovascular care.

NASHIK: IndiGoReach, the CSR arm of IndiGo, and InterGlobe Foundation, the philanthropic arm of InterGlobe Enterprises, organized their fourth Heritage Walk in Nashik, Maharashtra, on November 5, 2023. The walk is part of the ‘My City My Heritage’ campaign, which seeks to promote awareness regarding the significance of heritage and culture in India. The campaign has served as a platform for discussions and collaborations focused on preserving both the tangible and intangible heritage of the country.

Nashik was selected as the next city for the ‘My City My Heritage’ campaign due to its rich historical and cultural significance. The Heritage Walk, led by Ms. Amruta Uplekar, a conservation architect, offered a fascinating exploration of iconic landmarks of the city.
The ‘My City My Heritage’ campaign draws on material previously developed by InterGlobe Foundation in partnership with Sahapedia as part of a project to explore, document, and spread the diverse heritage and cultural aspects of ten Indian cities. More than two hundred cultural points of interest were identified as part of this project, and the material developed has been captured in the form of city booklets, which are now available to the public in both print and digital formats.

IndiGoReach and InterGlobe Foundation have individually taken forward various projects for promoting heritage conservation and preservation in India. Some of the major projects of InterGlobe Foundation include the conservation and cultural revival of Abdur Rahim Khan-I-Khanan’s mausoleum in Delhi, the cultural mapping and documentation of ten cities, and the restoration of the stepwell “Indra Kund” in Delwara, Rajasthan. Recently, InterGlobe Foundation also launched the InterGlobe HERITAGE Fellowships to engage a cross-section of the public in documenting and researching the cultural heritage of India and help increase its awareness.

PUNE: Roche Information Solutions India Pvt. Ltd., today conducted Roche Children’s Walk – a long Roche tradition, that brings Roche together to support philanthropic projects for children around the world. The contributions from the participants of the Children’s Walk support global and numerous local projects that make a difference for thousands of children.

The walk at Pune was conducted for and with differently-abled students of the Late V.R. Ruia Mookbadhir Vidyalaya school. Over 100 people participated in the walk including students from the school and employees from Roche Information Solutions India Pvt. Ltd. The one-and-a-half-hour walk started from the school in the city to Parvati and back.

The funds raised by Roche employees will be matched by Roche and will be then donated to the school to fulfill their requirement for an Audiometer and Speech Trainer. These devices will help 110 students in the school who cannot talk and hear.

Audiometers help in determining the hearing threshold of a child so that a suitable treatment plan can be identified. A speech trainer is a device that can be adjusted to meet the auditory needs of a child and help in communicating using a microphone.

While participating in the walk, Raja Jamalamadaka – Managing Director, Roche Information Solutions India Pvt.
PUNE: As a part of its continuing efforts to create awareness about the glorious forts, caves, and heritage sites of Maharashtra, SAMPARC, an NGO working for orphan children in their education and rehabilitation is organizing the 5th edition of the much-anticipated Heritage Walk on 18th December 22. The Heritage Walk initiative started by SAMPARC Balgram Centre at Bhaje Village in 2016 is a 3.6 km walk with a visit to four monuments including Vispaur and Lohagad Forts, Bhaje Caves, and Bedse Caves.

The walk will be flagged off from near the foothills of Bhaja Caves at 8.30 am. The walk will pass through a carnival program, seeing 32 cultural events, which include various cultural programs, seeing the history of the heritage monuments, and participants will get to enjoy Maharashtrian food at 5 different spots. About 450 locals from Bhaje and Lohagad Grampanchyats and surrounding villages along with SAMPARC employees and volunteers are geared upto welcome an estimated more than 8000 people including corporates and tourists.

Mr. Anuj Singh, CEO of SAMPARC Balgram said that the objective behind starting this initiative back in 2016 was to create awareness about these five beautiful places and create a sense of belongingness amongst the tourists and people at large, especially from Pune and Mumbai who visit Lonavala in large numbers throughout the year. The initiative has given a boost to tourism in this area. When we started, there were hardly one or two homestays in the area. Today almost every house is ready to welcome tourists to their homes. The footfalls of tourists have increased at least three times in the last five to six years.

Mr. Amitkumar Banerjee, Founder of SAMPARC said that the ultimate objective is to see that these monuments are listed as UNESCO heritage sites which will ensure the sites will be known globally and also better care will be possible.

Mr. Banerjee believes, SAMPARC Heritage Walk is not only for 4 – 5 Monuments, but also it draws the attention of the people of Maharashtra to consider 800 Large & Small Caves and 276 Forts of Maharashtra. The Walk creates a New Dimension as a Movement for the Conservation & Protection of Heritage Monuments.

He further added that corporates and individuals participate in large numbers and the funds collected are used to help run the SAMPARC Balgram orphanages for children in the Four States including Six Centres in Maharashtra.
