An exclusive ‘Toy Donation Drive’ was organized under Duville Cares

PUNE: Duville Estates, through its social welfare brand Duville Cares, celebrated the festive season by organising a ‘Toy Donation Drive’ for the children at its labour camp, reflecting the true spirit of giving. This initiative was organized with the active participation and support of the Duville Envoy (existing customers). There was significant participation from the customer community, comprising nearly 6,000 residents across Riverdale Heights, Riverdale Residences, and Riverdale Suites. These Duville Envoys were joined by the Riverdale site office teams, who came together to bring joy to the labourers’ children.

This activity culminated in a heart-warming Christmas celebration at the labour camp, where the toys collected from the donation drive run at each of the resident communities were distributed to the children. The happiness on their faces spoke louder than words. Moments like these show how simple acts of kindness add real meaning.

What began as an idea to share the spirit of giving turned into a full-fledged ‘Toy Donation Drive’ from the existing customer community to the children on site. This reinforces Duville Estates commitment to building communities that go beyond physical infrastructure, fostering empathy, engagement, and togetherness across customers, employees, construction workers, families, and partners.

This initiative served very well to bring together the existing customer community from Riverdale while meaningfully bringing happiness to these children associated with the Duville ecosystem.

Speaking about the initiative, Tushad B. Dubash, Director, Duville Estates, shared, “It was heartening to see our existing customers come forward and actively participate in the toy donation drive. Their willingness to offer their children’s toys brought immense happiness to the children at the camp. It is these small gestures that help build a cohesive community, something Duville Estates continues to strive for.”

By: Dr. Ishan Capoor is a Pulmonologist at Narayana Health City, Bengaluru

Most of us don’t give our lungs much thought until something goes wrong. Trouble breathing, persistent coughing, wheezing—those are red flags. But lung diseases like cancer? They can sneak up quietly, without any early warning signs. That’s what makes them so dangerous. And in recent years, there’s a new silent threat making its way into the lungs of teenagers and young adults—vaping.

It might look harmless, trendy even. A cloud of fruity vapor, a sleek pen-like device—hardly feels like a big deal, right? But underneath all the flash lies something far more serious. E-cigarettes, the backbone of vaping culture, are anything but safe. And when it comes to the developing lungs of teens, the damage might be worse than we think.

Vaping and Lung Cancer: The Not-So-Obvious Link

Let’s be clear: vaping doesn’t just “look” like smoking—it carries its own set of deadly risks. A recent study revealed something shocking—individuals who both smoke and vape are four times more likely to develop lung cancer than those who only smoke. Even ex-smokers who pick up vaping aren’t off the hook. Those who had quit smoking within five years and turned to e-cigarettes showed a significantly higher lung cancer risk compared to non-vapers.

What’s inside those vapors? A toxic lineup. Chemicals like formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acrolein are all present, and all are known to cause cell damage in the lungs, which builds up over time and paves the way for cancer.

Teenagers are at even greater risk. Their lungs are still maturing, their bodies more vulnerable to the inflammatory and scarring effects of repeated chemical exposure. The scary part? The real damage often doesn’t show up until years later. But it begins early, with inflammation, immune dysfunction, and lung tissue changes.

And it doesn’t stop at cancer. Vaping has also been linked to COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and worsened asthma—conditions that can severely affect quality of life, starting young and staying lifelong.

What’s Actually in a Vape?

Ask a teenager why they vape, and many will shrug: “It’s better than smoking.” But is it?

Peel back the candy-coloured marketing, and you’ll find an ugly truth—vape aerosols are loaded with chemicals you wouldn’t want anywhere near your lungs. The device works by heating a liquid (e-liquid or vape juice) using a coil. This creates an aerosol that carries a blend of harmful substances.

Some of the worst offenders:

Nicotine – Addictive and harmful to brain development, especially in teens. It messes with memory, increases anxiety, and contributes to mood instability.

Acrolein, formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde – These gases damage lung cells and raise cancer risk.

Benzene – Found in car exhaust, now found in your lungs.

Metals like nickel and tin – These come from the coil and can accumulate in the body, leading to long-term organ damage.

And let’s talk flavours. Fruity, minty, dessert-inspired vape options are a big reason teens get hooked. But those flavours? Created using chemicals that may seem harmless but can turn toxic when heated and inhaled.

What’s painfully ironic is this: so many young people believe vaping is the “healthier” choice. Instead, they’re unknowingly inhaling a concoction that can wreak havoc on their lungs, brains, and hearts.

Vaping: It’s Not Just a Lung Issue

Here’s something that rarely gets mentioned—vaping doesn’t just damage the lungs. It affects nearly every major system in the body, and teenagers may be setting themselves up for lifelong health issues.

Let’s start with the heart. Studies show vaping can:

Increase heart rate

Raise blood pressure

Harden arteries
Together, these changes boost the risk of heart attacks and heart failure, even in young users.

There’s also the terrifying condition called “popcorn lung” (bronchiolitis obliterans), which results from inhaling harmful chemicals used in vape liquids. It causes scarring in the lungs, making it hard to breathe, and the damage is usually permanent.

On the mental health side, the high doses of nicotine can lead to seizures, migraines, and long-term cognitive slowing. And it doesn’t stop there. More and more research connects vaping to depression, anxiety, mood swings, and emotional instability.

A single puff might seem harmless. But it can set off a cascade of health effects that are anything but temporary.

India’s Ongoing Struggle With Vaping Among Youth

Here’s the twist—vaping is illegal in India. The government banned e-cigarettes back in 2019. But you wouldn’t guess it from looking around. Teen vaping is still on the rise, and it’s alarmingly easy for underage users to get their hands on vape pens and juices.

A recent 2023 study by the Think Change Forum paints a worrying picture:

96% of teens aged 14–17 didn’t even know vaping is banned in India.

89% were unaware of the serious health risks.

So, what’s fuelling this ignorance? Easy access. Lack of checks. And, sadly, poor awareness in schools and households. Sleek designs and colourful flavours don’t help either—they disguise danger in appealing wrappers.

Surveys across cities like Delhi and Bengaluru show that vapes are still being sold, often under the counter and with zero age verification. This calls for tougher enforcement on illegal sellers and stronger education in schools and communities.

Schools should monitor for vaping just like they do for drugs and bullying. Parents, too, need to step up. Honest, judgment-free conversations can often do more than any warning label.

The Final Puff

Here’s the hard truth: vaping is not harmless. It’s not a cool trend. It’s not “better than smoking.” It’s a habit that puts young bodies, especially young lungs and brains, at real, long-term risk.

Lung damage. Heart disease. Cognitive problems. Mental health issues. Addiction. All for a temporary high and a flavoured cloud.

The choice facing teens and parents isn’t complicated. It’s urgent: protect your health or risk it all for a trend that doesn’t last.

Kaveri Gifted Education Center Completes 10 years of its pioneering efforts in gifted education.

Over 8 million gifted children from India are waiting to be identified and nurtured.

PUNE: “Children gifted with enormous talent are important as they are the ones who are going to lead the country. So, early identification of the talent and nurturing the same in the right direction is of paramount importance”, opined Padma Vibhushan Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar after he inaugurated the International Conference on Gifted Education 2024. The conference is organized by The Kaveri College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Pune in association with Kaveri Gifted Education and Research Center (KGERC) at the Shankuntala Shetty Auditorium of Kaveri Group’s Erandwane Campus. Indian Council of Social Science Research has also extended support to this conference. Gifted education is the set of educational practices for students who are considered gifted or talented.

Sighting an example of Lokta’s Law of scientific productivity Dr Mashelkar said, “Children with high talent are difficult to find, but it is important to find them early and an effort should be made to unfold their natural potential rather than molding them for a particular subject. Innovation should be encouraged from the grassroots level and it should be by the people for the people. While dealing with the children today, we must consider the fact that they were born in another time and are well informed due to the digital tools at their disposal.”

“One must not forget that Education is equal to the Future and parents too have an important role to play in this regard. How to think and what to think is something that is required to be taught to children gifted with high potential. The growth of various countries was largely driven by diverse aspects. However, India’s growth will be driven by IT which stands for Indian Talent“, he added.

Malati Kalmadi, Founder and Director of Kaveri Gifted Education and Research Center (KGERC) said, “It is indeed very gratifying to see that Dr. Mashelkar inaugurated KGERC and today when we are celebrating 10 years by way of organizing this international conference, he is the Chief Guest. The attention for gifted education is increasing globally with over 21 countries in the world having policies in place for the same. NEP 2020 has some related elements but a lot more attention is required to create a thoughtfully designed structure and framework for gifted education so that gifted children get the opportunity that they deserve.”

“We have set up Talent Hubs in the institutions of Kaveri Group that focus on identifying potential on parameters like STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and Art sector at an early stage. Facets like spiritual and emotional well-being are also given due importance. Millions of gifted children from various parts of the country are waiting to be identified and nurtured. According to an estimate, the population of such gifted children who have enormous potential in India is in the range of 7.32 to 8.25 million in the age group of 6- 18, So collective efforts are required to untap this huge pool of talent“, Malati Kalmadi added.

‘Nurturing Buddhiman Children – A Practitioner’s Guide’ was released on the occasion. This book is jointly authored by Dr Devasena Desai, Dr. Sameena Manasawala, and Dr. Paromita Roy. The book is published by Kaveri Gifted Education and Research Center and Vishwakarma Publications. Dr. Sameeena Manasawala and Dr. Devasena Desai were felicitated at the hands of Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar for their outstanding contribution to this field of gifted education.

Dr. Heidrun Stoeger, Professor of Educational Science at the University of Regensburg, Germany delivered the Keynote address on the topic ‘Mentoring and its Significance for Talent Development’.

Kushal Hegde, President Kannada Sangha, Pune was present on the occasion along with Balajit Shetty, Dr. Devasena Desai, Dr. Mukta Karmarkar, and Sumathi Srinivasan from the Kaveri Group of Institutes. Deepa Sathe anchored the program

A UBS-supported grassroots athletics initiative that aims to help develop healthy habits in kids through school-based competitions.

MUMBAI: Athletics Kids Cup is a new grassroots sports initiative for children and adolescents. Launched by Dspowerparts, a team of athletics enthusiasts from Switzerland, in collaboration with UBS, the initiative aims to promote physical activity among children and help tackle the growing concerns around childhood obesity among urban Indian children. The Athletics Kids Cup starts in the Mumbai region and aims to get tens of thousands of children moving. Schools are now invited to register for the Athletics Kids Cup.

Simple concept – huge impact

Athletics Kids Cup centers around three fundamental movements – running, jumping, throwing – that are required in almost every sport and are specifically practiced and perfected in athletics. The initiative features a triathlon-style competition comprising a 60m sprint, the long jump, and the ball throw and is open to children and young people between the ages of 7 and 15 from all walks of life.

Built with the conviction that sports, particularly athletics, can play a vital role in personal development, health promotion, and fostering mutual social understanding, the Athletics Kids Cup is an ideal platform for young participants to build character, values, integrity, mutual respect, and discipline. The initiative aims to inspire children to get the best out of themselves and to have the confidence to pursue their own ambitious goals.

India is on the brink of a health crisis with obesity rates rising sharply, particularly among children. Athletics Kids Cup aims to help counteract this problem by encouraging an active lifestyle as a means to improve overall health.

Schools in the spotlight

In the first season (2024/2025), the Athletics Kids Cup will focus on the Mumbai region. Schools will be key enablers in organizing school-level competitions with the help of a ready-to-use toolkit containing the material required to organize the competition independently, such as competition materials, bib numbers, certificates of participation, or a complete handbook. Dspowerparts and its partner Striders will provide all schools with the necessary help and advice to actively engage students in the initiative.

A platform for aspiring athletes

While it is of central importance to us to get all children moving, regardless of their background or talent, the Athletics Kids Cup also has the potential to grow as the perfect platform for aspiring athletes. The initiative features a three-stage competition structure. After participating in the school-organized event, the most talented girls and boys can qualify for one of the five regional finals in Mumbai, which will take place in January 2025. The top 30 athletes in each age category will get the chance to prove their mettle and be part of the Grand Finale on 15 February. These competitions will be organized in a professional setup, ensuring an unforgettable experience for the qualified young athletes.

Expansion planned for the 2025/2026 season

The initiators are already preparing for expansion. In the coming months, pilots will be carried out in Pune and Hyderabad, to expand the Athletics Kids Cup to these two cities in the 2025/2026 season. The expansion will be another step forward in spreading the grassroots initiative to other parts of India and making a significant impact in promoting healthy habits and physical activity among Indian children.

UBS enabling change that matters

The launch of the Athletics Kids Cup is made possible through the generous support of UBS, the Switzerland-based bank, which has had strong local ties with India for three decades. UBS is committed to empowering communities through catalytic programs that improve learning outcomes and the overall well-being of students, enabling them to achieve their full potential. The Athletics Kids Cup is a key initiative among UBS’s ongoing efforts to contribute to the development and success of India’s young generation.

BENGALURU: India is seeing an increase in the incidence of lung cancer, especially among women and younger age groups. This is due to more and more women taking up smoking in the country, and the rising habit of early-age smoking in the younger age groups. Cases of lung cancer are also increasing in non-smokers and light smokers due to rising pollution levels and passive smoking. This was said by doctors of Sammprada Multi-speciality Hospital, Bengaluru, ahead of World Lung Cancer Day.

Dr. Radheshyam Naik, Consultant Medical Oncologist & Hematologist at Sammprada Multi-speciality Hospital commented, “Over 80% of lung cancers are related to tobacco smoking in its various forms. The risk increases with the duration of smoking and the number of cigarettes one smokes per day. Early-age smoking raises the risk substantially. Exposure to carcinogens like asbestos, in addition to smoking, also increases the risk of lung cancer several-fold. Other important risk factors include passive smoking which accounts for 5% of lung cancers. Pollution from traffic and burning fossil fuels indoors for cooking also cause lung cancer, especially among non-smokers.”

Dr. Shivacharan P.V., Consultant Medical oncologist said, “The incidence of lung cancer is 5.6 in 100,000 population. It accounts for 5.9% of all cancers and 8% of all cancer-related deaths. Lung cancer is traditionally the disease of the 4th and 5th decade of life. The highest proportion of cases is recorded in the age group of 55 to 64 years. About 20-25 % of lung cancer patients survive for 5 years or more, while only 10-15% survive for 10 years or more. The associated morbidity and mortality can be reduced by early diagnosis.”

Dr. Vinod K Ramani, Preventive Oncologist at Sammprada Multi-speciality Hospital shared, “Most cases of lung cancer are diagnosed in Stages III and IV when it is already in an advanced state. Only 20-30% of patients get diagnosed in Stages 1 and II. There are several reasons for this.”

Dr.Vishwajeeth Pai, Consultant Medical oncologist added, “A proportion of smokers have chronic bronchitis which is difficult to differentiate from cancer, and hence they present themselves late to a doctor. Many cases of lung cancer get mistaken for tuberculosis initially. There is also reluctance among Indians to get screened for cancer regularly.”

Talking about the main challenges in the treatment of lung cancer, Dr. Varun Kumar, Consultant Radiation Oncologist at Sammprada Multi-speciality Hospital, said: “Many lung cancer patients are smokers, alcoholics or elderly people, with compromised lungs, liver, and heart. The toxicity associated with therapy can be substantial and many patients are unable to tolerate it. The cost of therapy, especially of newer treatments like immune therapy, targeted therapy, and anti-angiogenic treatment, can also be an issue for many patients. The efficacy of therapy is reduced if the patient seeks treatment in advanced stages of the disease. Many patients are addicted to tobacco and continue their smoking habit even during treatment.”

Dr Ajay GV, Consultant Radiation Oncologist at Sammprada Multi-speciality Hospital remarked “To effectively tackle the challenge of lung cancer, there should be regular screening of smokers supported by quit-smoking programs organized by the government and civil society. There also needs to be a change in attitude of physicians who should treat every patient with lung problems as a potential cancer patient.”

SOUTH AFRICA: The 2024 edition of the nationwide grassroots, Get Into Rugby (GIR) programme targeted at children aged six to 13 is officially underway and heads to the Free State province on Thursday, 18 July.

A festival event, two days before the world champions’ Test Match against Portugal in Bloemfontein, will take place to officially mark the return of the Engen-sponsored Get Into Rugby season.

The grassroots rugby initiative saw 244 788 boys and girls play the game across all nine provinces of the country in 2023, touching the lives of 114 281 boys and 130 507 girls, who might previously have never experienced organized sport, let alone rugby.

The program also offers young, aspirant rugby coaches, both male and female, an opportunity to develop their rugby coaching skills – a key aspect that aligns with Engen Sports’ values of creating a holistic platform for youth sport development.

Engen Brand & Sponsorship Manager, Tsholo Tiro, said that Engen was looking forward to another season of impacting and contributing to the growth of rugby in South Africa through the programme.

“The Engen Get Into Rugby program is quite important to Engen due to its unique ability to reach children at the grassroots level,” said Tiro.

“Over the years, sport has proven to be a fundamental aspect of the growth of children. As proud sponsors of this program, Engen takes pride in contributing to a unique platform that encourages not only sport development, but the holistic development of the children to ensure that rugby and society benefit from well-groomed future rugby players.”

The festival in Bloemfontein will be visited by Springbok players to add inspiration and impetus to the young players, while Rian Oberholzer, CEO of SA Rugby emphasized the importance of providing new experiences and opportunities to young people.

“The Get Into Rugby program has successfully introduced hundreds of thousands of children to rugby and sport over the many years and we’re grateful for Engen’s continued support,” said Oberholzer.

“This program is the first rung on a ladder that leads to our men’s and women’s Springbok teams. But, as much as that, it offers an opportunity to play organized sport for many children who would not ever have the chance to experience it.”
