Mumbai, November 19, 2016: Tata Literature Live! The Mumbai LitFest in its endeavour to honour achievements of stalwarts in the literature world, announces a new award to recognise the contribution of publishers with the Tata Literature Live! Publisher of the Year. The award will be presented at the Tata Literature Live!’s annual awards ceremony to be held on November 20, 2016, at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), Nariman Point, Mumbai.
In its inaugural year, the award will honour the publisher who has brought out a large collection of outstanding books this year. The selection will be based on the number of books from a publisher that have featured in the longlists, shortlists and list of winners of the Tata Hexa Literature Live! First Book Awards and the Tata Literature Live! Book of the Year Awards in the Fiction and Non-Fiction categories; as well as the Tata Literature Live! Business Book Award.
Announcing the award on Day 3 of the seventh edition of Mumbai’s biggest and one of the India’s best international literary festivals, Founder and Festival Director of Tata Literature Live! The Mumbai LitFest, Mr. Anil Dharker said, “All over the world, awards are given to books and writers for their outstanding literary work. However, the essential part of the process, without which their books would never be available to the public, is done through publishing houses. It is obvious that without publishers there would be no books and without good publishers we would not have good books.”
Mr. Harish Bhat of Tata Sons, said, “This is a welcome move considering how books can shape the minds of so many, and have the power to bring about a cultural shift in society. While good content is a must-have for a book to sell, a publisher helps an author refine his story, brings his or her art into the public domain and plays a vital role in the book reaching a wide cross-section of readers. A publisher is an essential partner to the author, and hence equally deserving of the highest levels of recognition.”
Since its inception, Tata Literature Live! The Mumbai LitFest has instituted awards to honour achievements by Indian writers, both emerging and accomplished. Apart from the above book awards, the festival also gives out Tata Literature Live! Poet Laureate Award and Tata Literature Live! Lifetime Achievement Award to celebrate and recognise contributions of outstanding literary stalwarts.
Taking this initiative forward, the festival this year has introduced four new awards – the Big Little Book Awards for Author and Illustrator in the Literature-for-children category, the Sultan Padamsee Award for Playwriting and now the Tata Literature Live! Publisher of the Year.
On first two days of the literature festival, besides panel discussions and straight talk sessions, specialised workshops were conducted on ‘Writing spine-chilling stories’ and ‘Staging Literature’. Going Viral, a show written and designed by Daniel Bye, blended storytelling and a performance lecture. This was followed by a magic show and a staged reading of macabre and hilarious selections from British novelist Roald Dahl’s works.
Tata Literature Live! The Mumbai LitFest is back to mark the city’s cultural calendar from 17th to 20th November, 2016. Over four days, the festival is taking place at two venues – National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), Nariman Point (17th to 20th November, 2016) and Prithvi Theatre, Juhu (19th and 20th November) – bringing together an eclectic mix of authors from around the world.
