Yadgir: Tata Trusts today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the District Administration, Yadgir Government of Karnataka to expand the focus of the Kalike Educational Programme in Yadgir district in the state, to address development issues using a multi-thematic interventions approach. The Kalike programme, also known as the Kalike Samruddhi Upakram, is a learning enhancement initiative by Tata Trusts in Yadgir district. It will now partner with the District Administration to facilitate authorities to also focus on other developmental issues that arise from inadequate health awareness, limited opportunities and knowledge of alternative livelihoods, water scarcity and personal hygiene.
With the help of early-childhood care and technology-based education services, the Kalike programme made a substantial impact, resulting in self-learning among children. Learning levels have been enhanced by developing appropriate digital material through technology partnerships. Now, the initiative will strive to make deep, long-term impact on the quality of life of its communities through early childhood development, education, livelihood (agricultural practices and skill development), and water & sanitation in North Karnataka, with specific focus on Yadgir.
The new focus is expected to raise the standard of living of 41,000 households and reach to 125,000 children, 2,000 youth and 8,000 farmers in Yadgir. The programme will build partnerships with the government and NGOs to boost development in the region. As part of Tata Trusts’ Mission 2020 programme, the objective of this intervention will be to create a model for the state and replicate the successes to upscale across the state. Tata Trusts will work alongside the government departments to implement multiple programmes through Kalike. Headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Yadgir, Tata Trusts will also be responsible for the formation of a steering committee that will regularly review the progress in the district.
Speaking on the programme, Mr. Burzis S. Taraporevala, Chief Financial Officer and Company Secretary, Tata Trusts said, “As part of Mission 2020 which has spanned over 2 years in Yadgir, the education program aims to enhance the learning levels and improve the quality of education in the district. Through this multi-thematic intervention approach that has witnessed impact in the region, Kalike is developing a proof of concept that can be replicated and sustained through the community and government institutions. We are certain that we will be able to address multiple developmental issues in this district, and that this model will be expanded to neighboring districts for holistic development.”
Yadgir has high levels of school dropouts; while the overall literacy rate in Karnataka is 75.36 percent, Yadgir has a literacy rate of only 51.83 percent. Nearly half its households travel more than half a kilometer to access drinking water. With high health mitigation costs and sanitation coverage being low, the district provides an opportunity for inclusive growth.
“Since Yadgir was identified as one of the districts in Karnataka and which is also under the article 371-J that required the most development in terms of human development indicators such as Education, Health and Livelihood sectors, we are extremely pleased that Tata Trusts works in the region to help combat these challenges,” said Mr. Priyank Kharge, District In-charge Minister, Yadgir. “The collaboration between government of Karnataka and the non-profit organisations will certainly boost these efforts.”
“We have been making significant progress in the district across all community issues, especially education, over the past few years,” said Mr. Manjunath J, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Yadgir. “Yadgir ranks low on the Human Development Index in terms of living standards, education and health. There is a need to increase skilling among the youth for alternative livelihood opportunities to mitigate poverty and migration. Through the expansion of this programme, the government will be able to enhance the development of Yadgir
“Our objective in Yadgir is to facilitate large-scale, long-term impact on the lives of communities by planning relevant interventions,” said Mr. D. Shivakumar, Executive Director, Kalike. “. Bringing in best practices and technologies and contextualizing the same for Yadgir, through collaborations with institutions and government agencies will help in the sustainable development in the region. With Tata Trusts support, we are confident this multi-pronged approach will lend itself to addressing Yadgir’s most critical developmental challenges.”
The Kalike programme aims to ignite long-term, transformational change in the overall quality of life in Yadgir, Karnataka by actively addressing multi-sectoral developmental issues that plague the region. Going forward, the programme intends to reproduce the successes witnessed in the district in neighboring districts as well.
