Looking for a house to rent can be a
tedious task whether you’re doing it on your own or using a broker. It can get
so overwhelming sometimes that you might forget to check certain crucial
details. Worry not, because here’s a checklist of things you should do before
renting a house:
Depending on where you’re living, the same
type of house will cost you differently. For example, a house for rent in Mumbai will be way more
expensive than a similar house for rent in Bangalore, even though they
are both metropolitan cities. This is because different cities have different
costs of living. So, if you’re moving from a city that is less expensive, you
need to make sure that you rent a house well within your budget. This is
because, it is not just the house rent that you need to consider, but the
overall cost of living in the city.
If you’re moving to a more expensive city,
you’re better off staying away from the city-centre so the rent will be
cheaper. You can always relocate when you have the financial means to do so.
in India can get tiresome. So, it’s no surprise that a lot of people want to
stay close to work. But it’s not just about how close your house is to your
work, you will be living there for the foreseeable future. What amenities does
the neighbourhood offer? Are there supermarkets to buy groceries? Is there a
hospital? If you have children, is there a good school? Is the neighbourhood
kid-friendly? You need to assess every aspect of living in the neighbourhood
before making your final decision.
Whether you are a cat person or a dog
person, you need to make sure the owner of the house is a pet person. A lot of
homeowners do not allow pets in their rented houses. Hiding this vital piece of
information simply because you love a house can get you evicted.
Many countries in the west ask for the
first and last month’s rent as a security deposit. But, in India, landlords ask
up to 1 year’s rent as a security deposit. Not everyone can afford that. So,
ask the landlord if the security deposit amount is negotiable so you can both
come to an understanding. You should also ask how many months’ rent will be
deducted from the deposit should you vacate the house.
Most homeowners charge the tenants leaving
for repainting the house before renting the place again. In most cases, it is 1
month’s rent, but some landlords could charge more. So, it is better to hash
out these details before you rent the house.
If you have decided to rent a house, make
sure you check every nook and corner to make sure everything offered is in
place. Check the door/window hinges, walls, tiles, wardrobes, etc. to ensure
nothing is broken. If there’s any discrepancy, talk to the owner immediately,
even take photos if necessary and ask for it to be fixed. If you do not do
this, chances are you can get charged for them.
These are some of the basic rule-of-thumbs to renting a house. Keep a checklist of everything you think is important to check and start crossing it out when you begin your house hunt.
