The 2020/21 LaLiga Santander season gets going
The new campaign has started, with the first seven matches of the new LaLiga Santander season taking place over Saturday and Sunday. Eibar and RC Celta’s goalless draw was the first match of the new campaign, while the first goal was scored by Yangel Herrera in Granada’s 2-0 win over Athletic Club later on Saturday afternoon.
Valencia fight back to win the derby
Despite conceding to Levante’s José Luis Morales inside the first minute, Valencia managed to fight back to win their derby against their neighbors by a 4-2 scoreline on Sunday night. At this very early stage of the season, that puts Valencia top of the standings.
A mixed weekend for the newly promoted sides
It was a very mixed weekend for the newly promoted sides in LaLiga Santander. LaLiga SmartBank champions Huesca earned a commendable 1-1 draw at Villarreal, while LaLiga SmartBank runners-up Cádiz fell to a 2-0 home loss against Osasuna. Playoff victors Elche, meanwhile, are not back in competitive action yet. They’ll have their first fixture of the season in the third weekend of action.
Ronald Koeman enjoys a pre-season win
New Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman picked up his first win in charge of the Blaugrana. The Dutchman saw his team run out 3-1 winners in a pre-season friendly against Gimnàstic de Tarragona, with Ousmane Dembélé, Antoine Griezmann, and Philippe Coutinho getting on the scoresheet.
Chimy Ávila’s injury setback
Horrible news out of Osasuna this week, as their superstar striker Chimy Ávila suffered a new injury. After missing the second half of last season with one ACL injury, he has now been hit with another in his other knee. Ávila will likely be out for several more months and Osasuna have signed Jonathan Calleri on loan from RCD Espanyol in response.
Several loan deals go through
Various LaLiga Santander clubs completed loan deals this past week as they continue to improve their squads. In addition to Osasuna’s move for Calleri, Eibar has brought in left-back Kévin Rodrigues from Real Sociedad, Granada have signed winger Kenedy on loan from Chelsea, Alavés have acquired center-back Florian Lejeune on loan from Newcastle, and Huesca have taken Pablo Maffeo – who spent last season on loan at Girona – from Stuttgart.
Yannick Carrasco extends his stay
After Yannick Carrasco spent the second half of last season on loan at Atlético de Madrid from Dalian Professional FC, the Belgian winger has made his return to the Spanish capital a permanent one. He has signed a four-year deal with Atleti, his second spell at the club.
Éver Banega’s tearful goodbye
Éver Banega is leaving Sevilla this summer, embarking on a new adventure with Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab. The Argentine held a farewell press conference this past week and it was a tearful affair. “Wherever I go there will always be another Sevillista, as I will never forget this fanbase,” the Sevilla legend said.
Aspas hits 200
Iago Aspas made his 200th top-flight appearance for Celta this weekend, reaching the landmark in the goalless draw away at Eibar on Saturday afternoon. Aspas is the face of the team and their star man and will surely be important once again this season for the Galicians.
Date set for the Joan Gamper
Barcelona’s traditional pre-season friendly, the Joan Gamper Trophy match, will go ahead this summer. They’ll take on fellow LaLiga Santander side Elche on the night of Saturday, September 19th. Elche will be the first Spanish side to face Barça in the match since Valencia back in 1994.
