Pune 8 December 2018 : A three day fellowship certification course ( FIAGES ) of the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo Surgeons (IAGES) was held in Pune at Hotel President off Prabhat Road recently. The three day program was organised by IAGES in association with Sahyadri Hospitals and Jt Center for Laparoscopy and Obesity . The course included structured intensive training through various lectures, live laparoscopic and endoscopic demonstrations and assessment of the candidates.
Dr Jayashree Todkar Vice President IAGES West Zone said that around 150 surgeons across various states participated in the three day program. The program is an ideal platform for up gradation and adoption of advanced skills in a structured manner. This included expert guidance , live surgeries , and hands on training through endotrainer which is virtual tool. Many complex cases were operated with advanced laparoscopic technic by the National team of expert surgeons and live demonstration was given to all delegates.. all the patients experienced fast recovery and were ready to go home within 48 hours of operation.
The core of FIAGES course which was started in 2007 is to impart laparoscopic training and advancements in the field including providing effective training about minimal access surgery. While in modern times surgeries have become effective form of treatment for many ailments , patients are still vary because of the fear for pain. That makes minimally invasive techniques like Laparoscopy more acceptable. Laparoscopic surgeries have distinct benefits and advantages for both doctors and patients. With minimal invasive surgeries the pain , trauma and blood loss is minimized which leads to faster recovery of patients and also results in long term benefits. On the other hand productivity and performance of surgeons is enhanced as the laparoscopic techniques can enable them to see with up to 20 times magnification.
Dr Todkar added that till a decade back surgeons would go out of India to upgrade their skills and get trained on latest technologies. But today we are fortunate to have talent , skills and advancements and surgical societies like IAGES who provide a platform to adopt latest advancements . Many experts and stalwarts and experts are contributing by sharing their knowledge with the younger generation.
Dr Jayashree Todkar who is Consultant laparoscopic and bariatric surgeon at Sahyadri Hospitals has been associated with IAGES for more than fifteen years as a member and from last five years she has been active on the National Executive Council of IAGES.
