Apple on Tuesday 10 November 2020 announced it would be rolling out its own in-house processors. Unlike most of its rivals, Apple maintains its own operating system instead of relying on Microsoft Windows. This new shift in building its own processors sets the pace for Apple to define the future of personal computers. This change was always on the horizon since Apple was already designing chips for its own mobile devices. The company unveiled 3 new Mac computers with the inbuilt M1 chip. This means that they will not be relying on the dominant industry chip processor supplier, Intel.
The new M1 chip operates similarly to iPhone and iPad processors. This means that Mac PC users will enjoy improved power efficiency. The PC now becomes somewhat of a smartphone. Apple has been known to be innovative with its mobile processors that allow features such as augmented reality and facial recognition to be incorporated on its iPhones. Delving into designing its own chips for Mac’s will allow Apple more performance from its chips. When unveiling the new chips, Apple’s chief software engineer highlighted that the new Macs could power up instantly as smartphones and tablets do. The new chips would also improve battery life to almost 20 hours of continuous video playback. The new chip is also able to run machine learning code seamlessly to improve user performance and experience. This means that editing videos or photos are easy and fast. Furthermore, its dedicated AI support means new software and games can be developed. This is especially good news for players betting or playing games in safe, legit, and popular sites such as comeon.com.
The Apple chip is already causing shockwaves in the PC market. While rivals will be watching closely how it transforms the market, this new competition will influence other players in a positive and progressive way. It is predicted it will have the same impact as when the launch of the iPhone caused a revolution in the smartphone market. Apple is even planning to integrate cellular connectivity to its new devices. This will give Mac laptop users an alternative way of accessing the internet. During the launch, Apple also revealed plans to use artificial intelligence on its laptops and PCs to enhance user experience.
While Intel is the leading manufacturer of chips, Apple feels that it is now free to progress at its own pace. Intel has recently encountered issues over the years, such as falling short of launching new generations of chips on time. Apple will also have greater liberty in the chips they design than they had by relying on Intel. However, Apple did not elaborate on whether they will manufacture chips for high-end laptops and computers. It is unclear how smooth the transition will be for existing users.
