“We decided to ride the storm! We decided to right the ship!” Dr. Sunil Kaza Said in His Farewell Address During AAPI’s 43rd Annual Convention in Cincinnati, OH

CINCINATI, OH: Dr. Hetal Gor, a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist from New Jersey, assumed charge as the Chair, Board of Trustees of AAPI, during the 43rd annual convention being organized here at the iconic Cincinnati Marriott at RiverCenter and Northern Kentucky Convention Center, Cincinnati, OH on Saturday, July 65, 2025. Dr. Sunil Kaza, the outgoing BOT Chair, during the luncheon meeting as part of the Convention, officially handed over the mantle to Dr. Gor.

“Reflecting on AAPI’s progress over the last year, Dr. Sunil Kaza, the outgoing BOT Chair, said during the luncheon meeting, ‘Start of AAPI 2024-2025 term was like a storm, the likes of which AAPI had never seen before !” Quoting Sadhguru, Dr. Kaza said, “You can learn to prevent the storm, or you can learn to ride the storm! If you can learn how to ride the storm, the storm is not a problem anymore. We decided to ride the storm! We decided to right the ship !” and added, “Despite multiple and significant challenges, together with our EC, BOT, and committee members, we have fulfilled our PROMISES.”

Highlighting some of the major initiatives under his leadership, Dr. Kaza said, “We provided scholarships through the Kakani educational scholarship for 2023-2024 and 2024-2025. For medical students, residents, and fellows, funds were secured and raised to support MSRF and its convention. For young physicians, funding was obtained to support YPS and their convention.”

For AAPI, Dr. Kaza said, “BOT helped address various legal matters. We secured IMRA membership for AAPI and united Indian physicians regardless of their state of origin. We prioritized fiscal responsibility by minimizing social event expenses and ensured AAPI elections followed ethical standards. Collaboration with the Executive Committee maintained transparency and continued a conservative approach to spending.”

My mom was born in Tibet, and she was forced to flee when the Communists took over. So my mom and my grandparents picked up, made their way through the Himalayas, through Nepal, and into India. Against all odds, she made it to college by the grace of the support and generosity of the Indian government, where she met my father, who’s from Punjab, India. The young couple got married and decided to come to the United States.”

Pureval went on to add, “I’m proud of my parents’ story, and proud of the fact that the generations that came before you had to struggle and progress to create community. Had to take racism and xenophobia head-on and nevertheless create community, whether it be religious or cultural, or professional, to continue to thrive and grow in this country. My parents loved America even before they themselves were Americans. They loved the idea of the American dream, and they came here hard, and they achieved that dream for themselves, but also their kids.”

Referring to the flourishing community of Indian Americans, Pureval said, “Our community is so drawn to healthcare, so drawn to helping others, so drawn to public service, so drawn to supporting the most vulnerable in our community. And it’s because of Trailblazers like you that next generations like me and my brother can pursue our dreams in whatever field that may be. Congratulations, everybody, so excited for you to choose Cincinnati, and I hope you have a wonderful conference.”

The growing influence of doctors of Indian heritage is evident, as increasingly physicians of Indian origin hold critical positions in healthcare, academia, research, and administrative positions across the nation. With their hard work, dedication, compassion, and skills, they have thus carved an enviable niche in the American medical community. AAPI’s role has come to be recognized as vital among members and lawmakers. AAPI is also transitioning into a multiyear thinking and behavior by maintaining core continuity.

WASHINGTON, DC: Healthcare continues to be the center of the nation’s focus, especially with changes in policies on immigration, Medicare/Medicaid, and Medical Education. AAPI’s annual Legislative Day has become a vital part of AAPI’s growing influence, and it has its united voice heard in the corridors of power. “We are excited to announce that our next Legislative Day is on Thursday, May 8th, in Washington, DC,” said Dr. Satheesh Kathula, President of AAPI. “We expect to have the participation of dozens of key Congressmen and Senators. The annual Legislative Day will be a unique opportunity for AAPI to be part of the decision-making process on matters related to healthcare.”

The day-long event will begin at 10:00 am and will conclude in the afternoon at 3 pm, giving participants the opportunity to meet with their own Congressman/Senators on their own time.

AAPI represents the interests of over 100,000 physicians and 40,000 medical students and residents of Indian heritage in the United States. Dr. Sunil Kaza, Chair of AAPI BOT, said, “The mission of AAPI, the largest ethnic organization of physicians, is to provide a forum to facilitate and enable Indian American physicians to excel in inpatient care, teaching, and research, and to pursue their aspirations in professional and community affairs. The Executive Committee is working hard, enabling AAPI’s voice to be heard in the corridors of power, and thus taking AAPI to new heights.”

During the annual Legislative Conference, among others, AAPI will discuss Medicare and Medicaid Reimbursements, Prior Authorization, Immigration Reform, Increased Residency Slots, Addressing Physician Shortage, and Scope of Medical Practice Issues.

“AAPI Legislative Day is a flagship annual event that is eagerly awaited to rekindle and renew our energy in bringing up the issues that we need to bring to the attention of national policy makers and leaders of the US Congress on Capitol Hill,” said Dr. Amit Chakrabarty, president-elect of AAPI. “It is a tradition of nearly three decades, which has brought many important transformations in National Healthcare policies that have helped Physicians of Indian Origin. Now, it is the need of the day to renew our friendship with new leadership under President Donald Trump and Vice President J D Vance and brief the Congressional leadership on issues that are important to us.”

“AAPI is once again in the forefront in bringing many burning health care issues facing the community at large and bringing this to the Capitol and the US Congress,” says Dr. Sudhir Parikh, Co-Chair of AAPI Legislative Affairs Committee. Dr. Parikh urged “AAPI colleagues and everyone interested in or connected with providing health care to attend this event and ensure that our concerns and needs are heard by our lawmakers and ensure that they act on them.”

AAPI has been seeking to collectively shape the best health care for the people of the US, with the physicians at the helm, caring for the medically underserved as it has done for several decades, when physicians of Indian origin came to the US in larger numbers.

US is currently experiencing a physician shortage, which will be exacerbated by retiring baby boomers, affecting thousands of patients’ access to a physician, and ultimately the health care they need, AAPI has strongly supported the much needed Immigration Reform, particularly with the focus on H-1 and J-1 visas are used by many South Asian American physicians, playing an important role in providing critical health care across the country.

“The conference will focus on Immigration Reform and ways for AAPI members to be part of the process in the implementation of the health care reform in this country,” Dr. Meher Medavaram, Vice President of AAPI, said. “While medical school enrollment has climbed 2% annually over the past five years through new schools and expansion of existing schools, the number of residency slots funded by Medicare has been capped at about 100,000 since 1997“.

“AAPI continues to discover her potential to be a player in shaping the healthcare of each patient with a focus on health maintenance rather than disease intervention. To be a player in crafting the delivery of health care most efficiently and to strive for equality in health globally, the annual Legislative Day is a perfect way to impact Healthcare policy and programs most effectively. Come and join us on Capitol Hill on May 8th,” Dr. Kathula said.

NEW YORK: It’s been 100 days since Dr. Satheesh Kathula assumed charge as the President of AAPI in late July 2024. Dr. Kathula, who rose from an ordinary member over two decades ago to be the President today, has served AAPI in various capacities. He was the Regional Director and a member of the Board of Trustees. He was elected overwhelmingly by AAPI members as the national Treasurer, Secretary, and Vice President of AAPI and served as the President-Elect of AAPI during the years 2023-24.

Dr. Kathula’s presidency began with organizing Leadership Seminars for AAPI leaders at the Indian Consulate in New York and leading the India Independence Day Parades. “I proudly represented AAPI at the Independence Day celebrations in both Chicago and New York. These events were a celebration of our heritage and an opportunity to showcase the vital role AAPI plays in the community,” says Dr. Kathula.

Recognizing the importance of Media and the role it plays in conveying AAPI’s core messages and showcasing the many initiatives to AAPI members spread across the US and to the larger public, Dr. Kathula was instrumental in organizing the largest press conference in AAPI’s history at the Consul General’s office in NYC. “This event served to outline our strategic goals and initiatives, garnering significant media attention and public interest. In addition, this platform allowed us to raise awareness and advocate for necessary reforms, emphasizing the importance of protecting our healthcare professionals,” said Dr. Kathula.

In addition, he participated in an interview on BBC and with the Press Trust of India, where he addressed critical issues surrounding physician safety in India and the contributions of Indian American physicians.

His efforts to engage the Diplomatic officials of India in the US led him to his productive meetings with the Hon. Consul General of New York, Binay Pradhan, and Deputy Consul General Dr. Varun Jeph. “These meetings fostered a stronger relationship between AAPI and Indian diplomatic channels, paving the way for future collaborations.

A critical priority of Dr. Kathula has been to build bridges with AAPI’s local chapters. In his efforts to reach out to the local Chapters, he attended several alumni meetings for Guntur, Rangaraya, and Siddhartha medical colleges, as well as Osmania, Gandhi, Kakatiya, Telangana medical colleges, and BJMC. Additionally, he participated in the Indian Physicians of Florida chapter’s annual gala. The annual FallGoverning Body meeting in Huntsville, AL was highly successful where key decisions were made for the betterment of the organization. “These interactions have strengthened our network and fostered a sense of community,” Dr. Kathula said.

He was a guest of honor for the Kakatiya Research Initiative for Transformative Innovations (KRITI), organized by NRI alumni of Kakatiya Medical College in Warangal. He participated as the guest of honor for the Indian Medical Association of Telangana State. He had an opportunity to meet the president-elect of the National IMA, Dr. Dilip Bhanushali who assured support and discussed common goals challenges, and opportunities to collaborate.

The historic Global Healthcare Summit in New Delhi, with a very minimum of days to prepare and organize turned out to be highly successful. “This year we gather under the important and timely theme of preventing cancer and heart attacks through lifestyle modifications and technology in a world where chronic diseases like cancer and cardiovascular illnesses continue to pose significant health threats, where corrective mission has never been more urgent,” said Dr. Kathula. GHS events received extensive coverage in media outlets across India and by leading publications in the US. This event was instrumental in highlighting AAPI’s commitment to public health and community engagement.

In order to materialize the themes and plans of AAPI, it’s vital to have local Government participation and collaboration. Towards this end., Dr. Kathula along with the AAPI delegation met with Hon. Indian Minister of Health Mr. J.P. Nadda and Minister of Coal, Mr. Kishan Reddy, with their discussions focusing on collaborative initiatives that could benefit both the healthcare sector and the community at large in India.

In addition, Dr. engaged with the Hon. Chief Minister of Telangana, Mr. Revanth Reddy, and key advisors, including Mr. Vem Narendar Reddy and Chief Secretary Mr. Jayesh Ranjan. During these meetings, “We discussed AAPI’s initiatives aimed at preventing cancer and heart disease, emphasizing our commitment to public health.” said Dr. Kathula.

Education is a primary role of AAPI, Dr. Kathulaled several continuing medical education webinars designed to provide valuable resources and knowledge to AAPI members. These sessions have been well-received and have facilitated ongoing professional development.

Dr. Kathula has been credited to have been working diligently to resolve several ongoing lawsuits, focusing on protecting AAPI’s interests while striving for equitable solutions. This effort is essential for the stability and reputation of our organization.

Immediately following the awards ceremony, Dr. Kathula was invited and participated in a panel discussion on equity in medical practice and leadership roles in medicine along with Lucille Perez, MD, Past President National Medical Association (NMA), Gilbert Burgos, MD, MPH, interim President and Chairman of the NHMA Board of Directors, National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA), Winston F. Wong, MD, MS, FAAFP, Chair and Acting CEO of National Council of Asian Pacific Islander Physicians (NCAPIP).

“Indian Americans are underrepresented in leadership roles disproportionate to the number of physicians we have“, Dr. Kathula said during the panel discussion. “At AAPI, we all should prioritize encouraging and mentoring the physicians including young physicians to take leadership positions to make a positive impact.”

Dr. Kathula expressed his appreciation to Dr. Mirza Rahman, President of ACPM for the invitation and Dr. Jill Whalen for moderating the session. “We had a great discussion about equity in healthcare and as ethnic physician organizations how can we address or fix the issues surrounding equity in healthcare,” said Dr. Kathula. “Thanks to Dr. Mirza Rahman, President of ACPM for the invitation and Dr. Jill Whalen for moderating the session.”

ACPM encourages collaboration among providers, policymakers, and institutions to address the nation’s health challenges effectively, as a diverse health professional workforce is integral to a highly functioning health system and a healthy nation.

The Blumenthal Award serves as a celebration of the progress made to rectify inequities in our nation’s health system and a reminder of the work that still needs to be done to address ongoing, persistent barriers to achieving full access to medical care, preventive services, lifestyle interventions, health education and well-being for all.

Founded in 1982, the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin represents a conglomeration of more than 80,000 practicing physicians in the United States. In addition, it also serves as a platform for more than 40,000 medical students, residents, and fellows of Indian origin in this country.

The AAPI YPS/MSRF (Young Physicians Section/Medical Students, Residents, and Fellows Section) runs under the main AAPI umbrella to give representation to them. 1 in every 7 people in the USA is touched by the care of a physician of Indian origin at any given time.

AAPI also has a Charitable Foundation (AAPI-CF) that spearheads free clinics and health fairs in India. Currently, 7 such clinics are being actively run in various states of India under the AAPI flagship. Every year, this mammoth cohort of physicians and physicians-to-be get together in a grand extravaganza, the Annual AAPI Convention, a beautiful blend of professional programs with cutting-edge CME along with a dash of color in the form of social events and exhibits featuring esteemed invitees from the United States and India.

WASHINGTON DC: The Asian American Unity Coalition (AAUC) is hosting the 2024 National AANHPI Unity Summit in Washington D.C. from September 19-20, 2024. The cohost of the summit includes ten other local, national, and global AAPI organizations. The summit aims to provide a platform for Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) organizations and leaders to interact and collaborate on issues vital to their communities. The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) is a Founder and Member of the Asian American Unity Coalition (AAUC) which takes up and campaigns on broad issues of Asian Americans. GOPIO is co-host of the Summit.

In the morning of September 19th, a delegate group of 70 individuals will attend a White House Briefing to discuss issues concerning our diverse communities, followed by a White House tour for 100 Summit attendees. In the afternoon, representatives of the DOJ will meet and listen to our community voices at the Crowne Plaza Hotel which will be followed immediately by a youth session discussing racial bias in school and cross-cultural identities.

During the Unity Summit on September 20th, the AAUC will advocate for various causes such as racial discrimination, civil rights, hate crime prevention, immigration, and Asian American history education. GOPIO had suggested taking up the legislative issue of legal immigration backlog (Green Card) which has put 1.2 million Indian applicants on the waiting list, at the current level may take as many as 100 years to get a visa number until and unless the immigration rules are changed to remove the discriminatory rules towards Indian applicants and also the Chinese and Filipino applicants. There are two bipartisan bills in Congress (HR-6543 and S-3269) that could reduce this long waiting period. These bills are included in the AAUC Summit agenda.

The summit will also mark the launch of the mobile-responsive online AAPI Community Hub. During the press conference on September 20th, the AAUC will present its resolution on the Alien Land Laws. Additionally, the AAUC will also highlight the power of the online AAPI Community Hub.

Several distinguished individuals will be recognized for their contributions during the summit:

US Rep. Judy Chu will receive the Political Leadership Award.

US Rep. Andy Kim will receive the Public Service Award.

Suffolk County Police Asian Jade Society, SEWA-AIFW, Team Aids, and Elizabeth de Leon-Gamboa will be honored with the Community Service Award.

Mr. Evan Chen will be recognized as Philanthropist of the Year.

Ms. JencyMalena Mesik and Mr. Suraj Kulkarni will receive the President’s Young Person and Youth Awards, respectively.

The AAUC Unity Summit registration is now closed. Attendees from across the country representing diverse AAPI ethnicities and age groups will have networking opportunities with leaders from multicultural ethnic groups through in-person interactions.

The AAUC has made significant contributions to the AAPI community by organizing national conferences, assembling a diverse working board, developing monthly newsletters and podcasts, and creating an online hub that connects over 15,000 AAPI nonprofits across all 50 states.

NEW YORK: “On this auspicious occasion of India’s Independence Day, I extend my warmest greetings to all members of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin,” said Dr. Satheesh Kathula, President of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) as he led the dozens of physicians who had joined the India Day Parade in New York City on Sunday, August 18th, 2024. “As we celebrate 77 years of India’s independence, we are reminded of the sacrifices, struggles, and unwavering spirit that have shaped the world’s largest democracy.”

Dr. Kathula, who assumed charge last month as the President of AAPI, an over four decades old physician organization, while addressing the tens of thousands of Indian Americans who had come to participate in the world’s largest India Day Parade, said, “On behalf of the entire leadership team of AAPI, I wish you and your families a joyous and reflective Independence Day. Let us continue to honor our heritage by contributing to the betterment of society and the world.”

Applause from the crowds reached a crescendo as the colorfully decorated Float bearing AAPI’s name, symbol, and message of health and well-being all rolled on in New York City Streets. Led by its energetic leaders led by Dr. Satheesh Kathula, President of AAPI, Dr. Amit Chakrabarty, the President-Elect, and Dr. Sunil Kaza, AAPI BOT Chair, the float marched along with dozens of others, saluting India and the over a billion people of Indian origin around the globe. The parade was organized by the Federation of Indian American Organizations (FIA), led by Dr. Avinash Gupta, a Regional Director of AAPI.

A host of AAPI leaders, including Dr. Kathula, Dr. Chakrabarthy, Dr. Kaza, Dr. Sumul Rawal, Dr. Suresh Reddy, Dr. Meher Medavaram, Dr. Krishan Kumar, Dr. Raju Kattara, Dr. Krish Soundrajan, Dr. Amy Shah, Dr. Rakesh Dua, and Dr. Hetal Gor, along with several young Physicians and MSRF members had come to New York from different parts of the country to be part of the largest India Day Parade in the world.

A record number of people, both Indian Americans and mainstream Americans thronged the sidewalks, filling Madison Avenue from 38th to 27th Streets, cheering jubilantly as the floats portraying the rich heritage of India and the rise of India as a world power, meandered through the Big Apple. The gods seemed to smile as the clouds lifted and the bright sun shone forth. The crowds acknowledged the contributions and achievements of the Indian Diaspora and their motherland, India.

“We are extremely happy to be part of this great event,” said Dr. Amit Chakrabarty, the President-Elect, leading the parade in New York City. “On behalf of the over 120,000 physicians of Indian Origin in the United States, I want to convey our greetings to all the people of Indian origin, especially to over two million Indian Americans across the United States, who continue to make India proud and make India stand tall among peoples of the whole world. On this very special day of celebrating our freedom, we take special pride in saluting our beloved tricolor. Let us recall with pride the great sacrifice of our freedom fighters, whose undying love for India secured us our freedom,” he added.

Dr. Sunil Kaza, who was on the AAPI float in New York, said, “On this happy occasion join me and all members of AAPI in saluting the hard work of all our citizens who have, over these 69 years, helped build a new India. Let us bow our heads in memory of all those brave Jawans and all our brave citizens who have sacrificed their lives for the cause of our unity, integrity, and progress. As we celebrate India and its several achievements on this very special day, AAPI is very proud to join in and salute this great nation and its 1.4 billion people.”

Dr. Kathula reminded the Diaspora that India’s journey since 1947 has been one of resilience, progress, and immense pride. As members of the Indian diaspora, we carry the legacy of our motherland in our hearts, and it is our collective responsibility to honor that legacy through our work, both in the United States and in India.

Dr. Kathula said, “Indian American physicians serve one in seven patients in the United States. Our contributions as physicians are not just limited to the clinical care, we provide but extend to our roles as educators, leaders, and advocates in our communities. The values that have been instilled in us through our heritage—compassion, dedication, and respect for life—are reflected in our daily lives and in the service, we provide to our patients.”

In his message to the Diaspora, Dr. Kathula called upon the community “to reaffirm our commitment to the principles of democracy, freedom, and equality, values that both India and the United States hold dear. As AAPI continues to grow and evolve, let us remain united in our mission to promote the highest standards of healthcare, foster excellence in medical practice, and serve as a bridge between the medical communities of India and the United States.”

Members of AAPI are not only known for the exceptional quality of care they provide to their patients, but also have established an unprecedented professional exchange program between physicians and researchers in the US and India, augmented medical education curricula, and established medical specialties, and emergency services in India, sponsored free medical care in the US and India through free clinics, participated in legislative days in DC, led with exemplary leadership and devotion the AMA – IMG Section and many committees with AAPI.

Last weekend, Dr. Kathula had the honor of participating in leading AAPI at the India Day parade in Chicago City. Referring to the event, Dr. Kathula said, “I am pleased to share that I had the honor of attending the Indian Independence Day celebrations in Naperville, Illinois, along with several of our esteemed AAPI leaders, including Dr. Sunil Kaza, BOT Chair, Regional Directors Drs. Anjali Gulati, Dr. Meher Medavaram, and Past President Dr. Suresh Reddy. The event was a wonderful opportunity to join in the festivities alongside distinguished guests such as the Indian Consulate General Hon. Somnath Gosh, U.S. Congressman Mr. Raja Krishnamoorthi, and the Mayor of Naperville, Mr. Scott Werli. The spirit of unity and pride was palpable as we celebrated our rich heritage and the strong bonds between our nations.”

The growing influence of physicians of Indian heritage is evident, as increasingly physicians of Indian origin hold critical positions in healthcare, academic, research, and administrative positions across the nation. Physicians of Indian origin are known for their great achievements, and their contributions to their motherland, India, and their adopted land, the United States in significant ways to the transformation of Indo-US relations. Serving 1 in every 7 patients in the US, AAPI members care for millions of patients every day, while several of them have risen to hold high-flying jobs, shaping the policies, programs, and inventions that shape the landscape of healthcare in the US and around the world. Since its inception in 1982, AAPI has been at the forefront, representing a conglomeration of more than 125,000 practicing physicians in the United States, seeking to be the united voice for physicians of Indian origin.

NEW YORK: The Embassy of India in Guatemala, in collaboration with the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin Charitable Foundation (AAPI-CF), COOITZA, Krishpar Healthcare S.A, the Santa Cruz Naranjo Health Center and Municipalities of Santa Cruz Naranjo and Santa Rosa Lima, jointly organized medical camps in Santa Rosa Lima on Friday, April 26, and Santa Cruz Naranjo on Saturday, April 27, 2024.

These medical camps were aimed to serve the local communities by providing specialized and complementary medical services to those in need, including consultations, diagnoses, and treatments across a range of specialties such as Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Gastroenterology, Urology, Gynecology, and Dermatology. Approximately 1050 patients (400 at Santa Rosa Lima and 650 patients at Santa Cruz Niranjo) visited the camp at both locations and got free medical consultations from these specialists.

With a primary focus on promoting health equity and enhancing access to quality care, the AAPI Charitable Foundation signed an MoU with COOITZA on April 26th, 2024 in Santa Roza Lima to organize similar health camps in the future.

The delegation of AAPI-CF physicians was comprised of Dr. Ajeet Singhvi, Dr. Gaurav Singhvi, a gastroenterologist, Dr Kishan Agarwal, internal medicine, Dr. Madhu Agarwal, an OB-GYN, Dr. Shashi Shah, Dr. Ravi Jahagirdar, urologist, Dr. Raj Bhayani, ENT facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Shweta Singhvi, radiologist, Dr. Mamta Singhvi, oncologist, and, Dr. Brahma Sharma, cardiologist.

According to a report shared by the Indian Embassy in Guatemala, a group of specialists from The AAPI Charitable Foundation, an eminent physician organization of Indian origin in the USA, visited Guatemala specifically for the medical camp. Founded by the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), the AAPI-CF Charitable Foundation embodies the spirit of compassion and service, channeling resources and expertise towards meaningful projects and initiatives.

By leveraging the collective strengths of its members and partners, the AAPI’s Charitable Foundation strives to make a tangible difference in the lives of underserved communities, both locally and globally. Through its steadfast commitment to philanthropy and healthcare initiatives, the foundation significantly contributes to improving the lives of individuals in Guatemala during the health camps.

The Health camp also got significant support from COOITZA, the Santa Cruz Naranjo Health Center, and the Municipalities of Santa Cruz Naranjo and Santa Rosa Lima. COOITZA, established in 2019 with the objective of social and economic improvement and focused on the development and improvement of life, through health products, was instrumental in providing invaluable logistical support to arrange the health camp.

This support likely included coordinating transportation, arranging venues, managing supplies, and facilitating communication between stakeholders. By leveraging its resources and expertise, COOITZA ensured the smooth execution of the health camp, contributing significantly to its success. Their dedication to improving lives aligns seamlessly with the objectives of the health camp, making their involvement indispensable in achieving the goal of providing essential healthcare services to those in need.

Krishpar Healthcare S.A. played a vital role in the medical camp by providing essential medical support in the form of supplying necessary medicines. Their contribution ensured that the camp had the necessary resources to deliver comprehensive healthcare services to the attendees. By supplying medicines, Krishpar Healthcare S.A. helped to enhance the quality of care provided at the camp, enabling medical professionals to diagnose and treat patients effectively.

The support from the municipalities of Santa Rosa Lima and Santa Cruz was invaluable in the successful execution of the medical camp. Their collaboration ensured that the necessary infrastructure and logistical arrangements were in place to facilitate the smooth functioning of the camp. The municipalities likely assisted with venue selection, permits, security, and other administrative tasks. Additionally, their engagement helped in mobilizing local resources and community participation, further strengthening the impact of the camp. The partnership between the medical organizers and the municipalities exemplifies the importance of community involvement in addressing healthcare needs and underscores a shared commitment to improving the well-being of residents.

Ambassador Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra while extending his gratitude to all the stakeholders emphasized India’s unwavering commitment to healthcare support in Guatemala. He underscores the significant strides made by India in extending medical assistance globally, including Guatemala, as a testament to India’s dedication to fostering health equity and access to quality care.

Dr. Mohapatra highlights India’s multifaceted approach to healthcare cooperation, encompassing capacity-building initiatives, provision of medical supplies, and collaborative projects aimed at strengthening healthcare infrastructure in Guatemala. He highlights India’s recognition as the “pharmacy of the world,” symbolizing the nation’s pivotal role in supplying affordable and high-quality generic medicines to countless countries. He reaffirms India’s steadfast commitment to standing in solidarity with Guatemala in addressing healthcare challenges, thereby embodying the spirit of cooperation and goodwill between the two nations.

The Embassy is committed to realizing the vision of our Hon’ble Prime Minister, who aims to ensure accessible and affordable healthcare not only for our citizens but for the entire world. Collaborative health camps conducted with AAPI-CF, COOIZA, and Krishpar in Guatemala have made positive changes in the lives of the Guatemalan population.

These camps have provided crucial healthcare services in specialties like Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Gastroenterology, Urology, Gynecology, and Dermatology to those lacking access to proper medical facilities.

The successful execution of these camps highlights the Embassy’s dedication to making a significant impact on the lives of those in need. By organizing these camps in a carefully planned, phased manner, the Embassy has demonstrated the Government of India’s profound commitment to improving the vision and quality of life for underprivileged individuals in Santa Rosa Lima, Santa Cruz, and surrounding areas. Their proactive collaboration with local experts, hospitals, and organizations showcases their unwavering dedication to promoting community well-being and addressing eye diseases.

According to the Embassy of India, it remains steadfast in its commitment to partnering with the local community to combat health diseases and expand access to high-quality medical care. The successful completion of two eye camps in Peten, the donation of lifesaving TB medicines to the Government of Guatemala, the donation of diabetes medicines to the Municipality of Xela, and the recently concluded health camp are all testament to this commitment. These initiatives reflect the Embassy’s ongoing efforts to make a tangible difference in the lives of the Guatemalan population and underscore India’s dedication to global health equity. Furthermore, the Embassy is actively engaged in discussions with relevant government authorities to facilitate the provision of artificial limbs to individuals in the local Guatemalan community, with plans for an upcoming camp focused on this essential aspect of healthcare. It is anticipated that this initiative will be organized shortly.

UNITED STATES: The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) recently assembled a panel of medical regulatory organization leaders from India, the United Kingdom, and the United States during the 17th annual Global Healthcare Summit in New Delhi, India. The panelists discussed and educated aspiring medical students from some of the premium Medical Schools in India who had keenly participated in the panel discussion.

The leaders of the National Board of Examination in Medical Science (NBEMS) India, the National Board of Examination in Medical Science (NBME) USA, and the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) were among the panelists who discussed and educated the aspiring medical students. The initiative was led and coordinated by Dr. Lokesh Edara, BOT-Chair Elect, Dr. Sumul N. Raval, current Secretary of AAPI, and Dr. Shubam Anand, Chairman of the Global Association of Indian Medical Students (GAIMS).

Medical education has many challenges in the transfer of knowledge and quality. India is introducing the NEXT examination, which is the licensing examination similar to USMLE in the US, while the UKMLE is starting in the UK in 2024 in place of the PLAB examination. NMC has applied for WFME Recognition status, which is mandatory to apply for the USMLE examination.

Dr. Peter Katsufrakis, President and CEO, of NBME, USA, spoke about the requirements for Medical students to transition and get accreditation to practice Medicine in the US. Dr. Humayun Chaudhry, President and CEO of the Federation of State Medical Boards, is a graduate of NYU, NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM), and Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, and was listed by Modern Healthcare as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare in 2022.

Expressing appreciation for Dr. Edara and Dr. Raval for taking the lead in facilitating interaction and dialogue between the Medical Education Boards of India and the United States, Dr. Anjana Samadder, President of AAPI said, “Since its inception over four decades ago, AAPI has been in the forefront advocating for medical school education reform and for the medical graduates from India to be treated on par with their counterparts in India. India is already leading the global pharmaceutical industry, and rebooting medical education will help India enter the league of leaders in healthcare around the world. The meeting today was a great start, and I look forward to AAPI continuing to lead such efforts in the coming years benefiting the medical fraternity.“

The AAPI’s initiative to bring together leaders in medical education regulatory boards from India, USA, and UK during GHS 2024 is a significant step towards streamlining medical education in India to meet global standards. The meeting provided a platform for aspiring medical students to learn from and interact with experts in the field, and it is hoped that the exchange of ideas and challenges will benefit the medical education system in India and help tens of thousands of medical graduates coming from India to have recognition in the US.
