PUNE:  Of all the sensations that an individual can experience, pain is the worst sensation. The pain management specialists do the important work of taking care of this pain. Therefore ‘Pain management’ as a branch is of absolute importance and should be granted the status of super specialty from the statutory body opined Dr. Shivkumar Utture, renowned surgeon and member of the National Medical Commission.

He was speaking as the Chief Guest at the inaugural session of the 38th National Conference of Indian Society for Study of Pain, ISSPCON 2024 organized by the Society for Study of Pain Pune (SSPP) from 2nd to 4th February 2024 at Hyatt Regency in Pune. The conference discussed recent advances and deliberated on various topics related to pain management through panel discussions, keynotes, advanced interventional workshops, and scientific programs along with poster presentation. Dr. Vrushali Kinhalkar, renowned gynecologist and obstetrician, Dr . Murlidhar Joshi, President of the Indian Society for Study of Pain ( ISSP), Dr. Krishna Potdar, Vice President of ISSP, Dr. Pravesh Kanthed, Secretary, Dr. Hitesh Patel, treasurer along with Dr. Uttam Sidhaye, Organizing Chairman, ISSPCON 2024, Dr. Varshali Keniya, Organising Secretary ISSPCON 2024, Dr. Pradnya Bhalerao, organizing treasurer and Dr. Madhuri Lokapur, Scientific Chairperson among others were present on the occasion.

The souvenir of ISSP and cover of the Indian Journal of Pain as well as an ISSP T-shirt was released on the occasion at the hands of dignitaries.  

Dr. Shivkumar Utture said that whenever we advise patients for surgery, the first question patients ask is about the pain of the surgery. Pain specialists can make their life and future comfortable. This is a branch of super specialty and should be granted this status by the statuary body. Citing the recent example of guidelines for ICU admissions, he said it is high time we become proactive and as ground workers come out with our protocols and submit them to the center. This should be for every faculty.

Guest of Honour Dr. Vrushali Kinhalkar, renowned gynecologist and obstetrician from Marathwada said there is a deep connection between woman and pain, and this is evident during the labor. Pain is at the root of every creation. So the importance of pain is tremendous in the human mind.

Dr.Murlidhar Joshi, President of ISSP said that ISSP has 13 state chapters and 18 city branches with more than 3000 members.  We are completing 40 years of ISSP this year. 

Dr. Pravesh Kanthed, Secretary, said that ISSP is the largest body of pain physicians. We are trying hard to get super specialty status and working in that direction.

Dr. Uttam Sidhaye, Organizing Chairman, ISSPCON 2024 said “The conference aimed to equip medical practitioners with the latest advances in the holistic approach of this branch towards ‘Pain Management“.

Dr Parag Munot and Dr.Medha Phadke were the compere for the event while  Dr. Varshali Keniya proposed the vote of thanks.
