First of it’s kind of Virtual Reality Workshop on Cataract Surgery in Western India
PUNE: PBMA H V Desai Eye Hospital, a leading eye care institution in Pune, organized a unique surgical skill transfer workshop for young ophthalmologists recently. The workshop, supported by the All India Ophthalmology Society (AIOS), trained young eye doctors in advanced cataract and other sub-specialty surgeries.
“The day-long workshop included 80 surgical sessions for 35 ophthalmologists from all over Maharashtra. Such workshops focused on practical learning in the wet lab are the need of the hour to benefit our next-generation surgeons“, said Dr Rahul Deshpande, Chief Medical Director, and Dr. Kuldeep Dole, Director, of H V Desai Eye Hospital.
What’s exciting was that the workshop featured a cutting-edge Virtual Reality model called “Oculus” that allows doctors to practice surgical steps independently. The Virtual Reality model provides a realistic and immersive experience for young ophthalmologists to learn each step of cataract surgery. This can be practiced repeatedly enhancing their skills and in turn, can potentially lead to better patient outcomes.
“This innovative technology is a first in western India and promises to revolutionize the way eye surgeons are trained” Said Dr Sucheta Kulkarni, Medical Director of H V Desai Eye Hospital.
The workshop was organized under the guidance of the Maharashtra Ophthalmology Society and Poona Ophthalmology Society.
“H V Desai Eye Hospital has a well-equipped wet lab for surgical training of all budding ophthalmologists“, said Senior Ophthalmologist Dr. Ashwini Gaikwad.
“By equipping eye doctors with the latest skills and technology, H V Desai Eye Hospital is reaffirming its commitment to providing world-class eye care to the community”, said Parvez Bilimoria, Executive Director of H V Desai Eye Hospital.
