NEW YORK: The Federal Reserve Bank of New York has named Kartik B. Athreya as the new Director of Research and Head of the Research & Statistics Group. Athreya, who is currently the Executive Vice President and Director of Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, will join the New York Fed in February 2024.

In his current role, Athreya has successfully launched several initiatives unique to the District, including the Center for Advancing Women in Economics. He has also advised the Bank’s president on matters related to monetary policy, banking, and financial markets.

John C. Williams, President and CEO of the New York Fed, praised Athreya’s leadership skills and his proven track record of bringing a collaborative and inclusive approach to leadership. Williams expressed confidence that Athreya’s expertise in macroeconomics and household finance would help drive innovative research and policy analysis at the New York Fed.

Athreya, who has served in economic research leadership roles for over 10 years, has a doctorate in economics from the University of Iowa and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Iowa State University. His research interests are in macroeconomics and consumer finance, and his current research is focused on measuring and understanding household financial distress and debt repayment decisions.

In his new role, Athreya will be a member of the Bank’s Executive Committee and will lead the Research & Statistics Group, which is responsible for conducting economic research, regional analysis, and community outreach efforts. He expressed his excitement about using his experience and knowledge to support the Federal Reserve System in understanding the economy, addressing economic challenges, and guiding the formulation of monetary policy.

Overall, Athreya’s appointment is expected to bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to the New York Fed’s research and policy analysis efforts, as he takes on the role of Director of Research and Head of the Research & Statistics Group.
